We pay 16k for 100Mb leased line from BT so the pricing for 30Mb seems about right. @themightymrp In terms of Lightspeed or Bloxx. I would go with Lightspeed their inline filter is so easy to use and just works without needing someone to baby sit it all day.

I have had this issue with a Cisco router and a WAN switch, the auto sensing did not work and we had to manually set the duplex on the ports.

The Sonicwall is head and shoulders above the Smoothwall in terms of firewall. The App identification is good and so is the bandwidth management on various subnets / AD user groups etc. The GUI for reporting is much nicer (love the spinning pie chart) you can identify the issues much easier. For a basic firewall the smoothwall does the job for doing simple port forwards but if you really want to get a handle on what traffic is coming in and out of your network then the Sonicwall is the first choice. If you have the money Palo Alto is very nice too.

DNS scavenging should sort out the duplicate records in DNS as RTFM said its to do with the passwords databases

No sure what you are asking here? If they are on a separate VLANS the location is identified by the IP range of the VLAN, this is created as a Location in smoothwall for example 10.149.10.x to 10.149.10.x. Then setup as a transparent proxy and the method for authentication is a redirect to an SSL login page. No need for proxy settings in the device or messing with WPAD. Is this how you are doing it RTFM?

The Sonicwall SRA4200 is great for SSL VPN and easy to setup, lots of features, will plug in to your AD. Cheap as chips too. If you look for a "old" none branded Dell model you may grab yourself a bargain.

If anyone has any android devices you will need to add the proxy in manually to get things like the play store working even if you are filtering using ident by location in smoothwall.

IRIS is pretty good not cheap probably 10k for 50 users for 3 years. Fairly easy to setup and configure. Like any of these systems you need someone in the school to be pushing the system in terms of teaching / learning and staff development. We found that initially there was some IT involvement in setting the camera up for teachers but they soon got the hang of it. The system works fairly well on wireless N if your wireless backbone is good enough.

From my dealings I would say Ruckus is hard to beat! having used Cisco, Netgear, Meru and Aruba.

Not really answering the question but have a look at WDS(Windows deployment servers) Will save you a shed of time imaging!

This is a bit like the iOs and Android debate I have good and bad experiences with both HP and Dell, My last few server purchase for VM hosts have been HP G7's which have been great.

Netgear XSM and GS ranges will support 10Gb over om1 fibre up to about 270m and i have seen them running above 300m and the price point is not to bad. The down side is they are not HP / Cisco so they can be "well a bit netgear" however they do provide good value for money. Depends on budget, if you have the money go HP if not and you still want 10Gb links the netgears will do it.

Advantages of a good SAN / Dedupe /Snapshot every hour and constant replication across the site. The days of 3 days to do a full back are long gone. I can honestly say Backup Exec/ Veeam / Large NAS and Tape loaders are bloody awful! You can then do Full offsite with something like crash plan if your DR plan asks for it

+1 for Netapp. They are the daddy in terms of virtualisation, VMware often demo on them even though they own EMC or the other way round The duplication is fantastic and the background snapshot technology is awesome. I use them across two large secondary schools and Snapshot every hour. They have a licensed from Microsoft for CIF so it just works using the previous versions tab. Example a Student creates a piece of work at 9 and accidently deletes it at 11 we can restore the work from 9 and go back 13 weeks using the same method. Netapps snap mirror is great too, setup an identical Netapp in another Part of the building and replicate on the fly. The main issue with the Netapp is that if its setup correctly you forget how to use it as you hardly ever need to touch it. Setup and forget!! You also need to haggle hard,but they will come down in price especially if competing with EMC! The EMC are great pieces of kit too but the NETapp is the Daddy of storage. HP /Dell they are just playing at SANS. You need to look at 2040’s and above some people will try to sell you a 2020 but they don’t have enough nic’s

I would recommend Millgate; the guys for the AV install are always friendly and do a good job. Luke goes the extra mile, if there is an issue with a piece of kit, MS licensing he will do his best to help resolve the issue. Quick on quotes and prices are generally great.

Never had any issues with o2 in terms of 2g signal but 3g was awful I have just moved from 02 to T-Mobile (Galaxy note 2) I am amazed at the performance difference in 3g downloads. O2 I was getting 0.5Mbs on T-Mobile I am get anywhere between 5-7Mbits. giving me truly useable Internet Access when on the move.
