iPad Youtube app through proxy (Smoothwall)
ict_support replied to Jamesmaps's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
The issue with iOS is the way that it handles the proxy. It works for Safari and the Mail application but the forwarding proxy is not enforced for individual apps for example youtube which tries to go direct. This is why opening up the ports on the firewall allows the Youtube app to work. So adding c.youtube.com will not work -
LGfL 2.0 Problems
ict_support replied to Shaun_Dark_Lord's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I use BT, (CN21 ) I am not based in the LGFL area, we moved away from YHGFL. In just over two years I have had zero down time in terms of Internet connectivity. The cost savings were a bonus; it’s the flexibility / time saving/ reliability that have made such a difference to the schools that I look after. -
LGfL 2.0 Problems
ict_support replied to Shaun_Dark_Lord's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I have to agree with John, the best move for the schools in LGFl is to step out manage your own line \ filtering \ firewall. I have done this with 3 schools now and they are all over the moon. Flexibility and being able to react are key to delivering a good IT service to support teaching and learning. We saved a heap of money in the process too. -

WDS is part of 2008 r2 so there is no extra cost, 2008 licenses are pretty cheap for education. Can FOG do driver injection for different types of hardware like WDS?
-
Thats a good goucha I found that on a few different laptop models
-
I would go with WDS, If you use multiple vlans you need to add the helpers to DHCP options 66 the host name of your deployment server and 67 points to the correct file location for example boot\x86\wdsnbp.com The main issue with WDS are getting the correct nic driver for the boot image(basic windows 7 setup). also people get confused that you need a boot image for x64 and 32bit depending on what hardware version you are deploying but you import this off your windows 7 disks into WDS as the boot image is just the basic windows 7 install off the windows 7 disk with the drivers injected into it. The drivers then need injecting into the boot image. (The driver cache for windows 7 is pretty good and will find a lot of hardware) The most successful image creation is done if you boot the PC that you want to use as your master image into WinPE from a WinPE dvd and then use the built in imagex to create the wim. (This can take a while) Example imagex /capture D: D:\Win7ULT.wim "windows 7 ultimate x64" (Sometimes windows PE will use a different drive letter i.e. c or d so if the imagex command is not recognised change drive letter) Then import the wim file you have just created into WDS for deployment (install images)right click in WDS on the install images folder install and point it at the wim file to import This method works every time as long as you have the correct drivers in the boot image on the WDS server. If you get a batch of new PCs in you can simply add the new drives to the boot image in WDS and deploy your standard image no messing creating another image etc If you deploy a KMS server on site that will register you windows 7 clients and office 2010 (if you do the separate install to enable the office registration) Once its setup correctly you basically just press f12 f12 and select your image and walk away. You could easily deploy a school with 700 PC's with a new image in a week as long as your backbone is quick enough.

Most problems with WDS are related to not have the right drives in the boot image for the hardware. If it is having problems connecting to the deployment share i would start with the network driver. I have found that a lot of device manufactures still label them up as RIS drivers and not WDS drivers.

What ticketing system/ it call logger do you use?

My Experience so far using windows 8 The amalgamation of the Tablet user Interface is at the sacrifice of the desktop experience. I don’t think Microsoft has quite got it, users like the start menu. I find the Metro UI gets in the way of what I am trying to do on a PC, It is ok on a tablet but not as useable as iOS or Android offerings

[ipad] Managing iPads in school?
ict_support replied to TechSupp's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Main Problem we have with the iPads is each app requires a different port to connect to the Internet etc also the iPads don't support NTML authentication so we are having to filter by IP for the iPads -
As far as warranty Netgear give a lifetime warranty on their kit now, I do have a cisco router for my 100M leased line and two hp switches for the SAN but for the remaining network it's net gear. It's about the right price for the right job. . Some of the recent net gear switches / modules support 10g over om1 up to 220 meters, for a snip of the cost of cisco / hp As I said before their kit is good value for money that helps me get the balance, for example my lowest spec pc has 2gb of ram most are 4 gb, if I went cisco I would still have some poor pcs connected to my switches , CRT monitors etc etc. Students / staff like to see the investment being made
-
I use Netgear they provide great value for money we can have multiple classes video editing live across the network using adobe premiere pro cs4 without a stutter. You need to be looking at their business class kit. I would compare them to Ford as far as an analogy, they produce good cars for reasonable money, no they are not BMW or Mercedes but you are not paying for the name or the extra refinements that a lot of people just don’t need. They are easy to administer compared to Cisco /HP and also long as your topology and VLANings are well thought out, jobs a good un. The network here has 800 pcs and has been faultless since I put the Netgear kit in 2 years ago. As a school how can you justify putting in cisco that would cost more than double, I don’t think you can, cisco can be a pain to administrator and often the skill base is not available within a school environment to support it so you have pay external companies to help. Question If you have a 100k do you spend that all on switches or do you spend 50k on switches and 50k on kit for the classrooms to support teaching and learning? It’s a balance and I find Netgear helps me to find the balance.

You install windows 7 with no key. Then setup enter your 2008r2 KMS key in windows server 2008 r2 "just click change key" It will then say that you have entered a KMS key do you want to continue. Remember that the KMS key can be activated a max of 6 times. When your windows 7 or 2008 clients look for activation they use your local DNS service record to find your local KMs server, thats it Office 2010 install the app and it will ask you to enter the 2010 kms key, thats it
