Also not exactly what your after but if you have FOG in your school (An imaging program like ghost) you can use that to change the screen resolution.

Could just be a shot in the dark here but I remember when I was trying to resize my partitions at home I had; 1) Windows -NTFS 2) Ubunu - EXT4 3) SUSE - EXT3 4) SWAP - partition for both the Linux OSs and I chucked in a live disk to try and shuffle them around and I couldn't then I found that the live disk had mounted the SWAP partition and effectively locked the drive so I had to swap off and unmount the drive first.

I've also 'heard' that Google just use 'bazillions' cheep/almost free desktops instead of real servers but I think that its just an urban myth... There is a good video here of a Google data center, one of many apparently... I don't see any cheep old PC's there though

Hi all, We host our school website (basically the Edugeek Joomla template ) on site and we recently moved from hosting on an old Linux box to a new server running Windows Server 2008 R2 with IIS 7. I was having issues getting PHP to install/work so I used the Microsoft Web Platform Installer. I got the site up and running but now ldap authentication doesn’t work at all. If I even enable it I can’t sign in with a local account. I just get a “500 Internal Server Error”. The only way to go back in is to edit the sql database to change the ldap plug in to disabled. I have looked around and some post say to edit the php.ini file and uncomment a section, but when I look the line to uncomment is not there… Dose any one know how to get PHP working with LDAP when installed from Microsoft Web Platforms? Or am I going to have to uninstall it and install PHP ‘properly’? Also on a side note dose any one know of a good plug-in that allow students (ldap users) to log in and get a page with the contents of a shared folder? One of the teachers wants to be able to put work up on the website so students that are sick/away can download it, not looking for a full on VLE just wanting to host a few work sheets. Cheers

You might want to check you services and see if 'messenger' is running? I have a feeling it’s disabled by default, I'm sure you could change that on all your computers with a GPO though.

You can have a lab of computers with the same (or very similar) hardware and push the same image to all of the at once with multicast and they will all run through a setup and get their own unique names and then be joined to the domain and placed in the correct OU.

Controluser Password2 is a good one too, not so much for networked domain computers but if you want a home computer to log in without asking for a password.

Hi all, I recently decided that our current FOG ‘server’ (old P4, 512mb PC with a 500 GB HDD) needed replacing and I had an no name server that was free so I installed Ubuntu 10.04 Server and FOG 0.29 on it, copied our images across and exported the hosts. It all went smoothly but then I got a call this morning saying that a lab of computers wouldn’t boot when I went to look load up the PXE Linux fine, with the ascii art thing that says FOG but then go to “booting from local hard disk” and freeze. They won’t even reboot when I hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I can hit esc to skip PXE and they boot with out issues so I removed PXE boot form our DHCP scope for now but I can’t work out why they won’t boot? All the other PCs in the school are fine and they did work when we had 0.28 on Ubuntu 9.10 Server, I have tried to update the kernel to newer and older versions (using the Tab under About>Kernel updates) but had no luck getting them going. Any ideas would be appreciated.

The dll "d3dx9_35.dll" is part of Direct X 9, maybe the game detected a newer version of Direct X (v10) when it was beeing installed and skipped the file? You can try to install Direct X 9 again either from the game disk (Many disks will have a folder called Direct X with the install files in there) or you can download the install from the Microsoft website. Alternatively you can just download the dll and place it in the directory you installed the game (But be carefull some the the "Download dll" sites are dodgy).

Not exactly what you are looking for but if I was going to replace a server and I wanted a snapshot I would use VMware vSphere. If you get the free 60day trial you can take a snapshot on a live 2003 server and make it into a .vdi file. Then if you want to load it up later you can use Sun Virtual Box or any other free/open source virtual machine software.

I just saw a link in the bottom left corner that I could swear wasn't there before that says "Remove background Image" but maybe I overlooked it because it would have been white text on white background.

I'm not really sure where to put this, but what do other people think of the new Google home page? Personally I think it's Google trying to dress up like Bing and I don't like it. One of the things that I like about Google is its simple home page. Not cluttered like Yahoo or with random backgrounds like Bing. On a Side note dose anyone know how to get the "classic" look back? I saw I could change the background to white so I did that but the text (Google logo and advanced search and so on) is all in white too still so thats not great.

I am surprised no one has recommended using Wisesoft's Password Control? Its very easy, with big colourfull buttons and dosnt give the users much they can mess up. We use it to get the Library staff to reset student passwords. www.wisesoft.co.uk

Hi All, To start off, all the computers in the school have Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox 3.6 with the latest flash installed (10.0.45.2). The reason we have stayed with IE6 is that the WA Department of Education use an Oracle webmail program to centrally manage all staff and student emails instead of each school having its own exchange server. The Idea is good in theory allowing people to move schools without changing their email address and so on. But it does have a few issues, one of the major ones being that it only works properly with IE6 and as such we are not allowed to upgrade to IE7 or 8. Any way after a recent updated on the mathletics website (mathletics.com.au) now when students click to sign in they get an error saying: “Mathletics has detected that you are using Internet Explorer 6 as your web browser. Microsoft no longer supports Internet Explorer 6. To continue using Mathletics, please upgrade your web browser. Please click on OK to upgrade your browser.” “Ok” takes them to the MS download page for IE8 and “Cancel” just dose nothing. They get this error even when using Firefox 3.6. I tried calling their helpdesk and they were not available, I have sent an email as well but I thought I would post this here and see if any one has a salution. Is there any simple way of “fooling” mathletics to think we have IE8 and allow students to log in? A nasty registry hack or something? Or am I going to have to upgrade the maths lab to IE8 and just say no email in that lab?

I wonder if it has something to do with the file system or something, I remember having the same trouble not long ago. I had a 98 machine (not networked) and put some files on a floppy, then took it accross to an xp machine and couldnt read them... I found if i formated it with XP then put it into the 98 machine could both could read/wright with out isue but if i formated it with the 98 box it would not read in xp... odd...

We use PaperCutNG here, It is great you can easly limit the ammount students can print. We let all students have $20 at the start of the year and then charge them 10c for grayscale and 20c for colour jobs. If they run out they can come and ask for more, we will look at what they have printed, if its all reasonable we add more. The licence is provied free from WA Department of Education for our school though so I'm not sure about costs.

Probably not a whole lot of help to you but it all loads fine for me, Im using Firefox 3.6 with flash 10.0.45.2 behind our proxy.

Surely with this you would still see BIOS messages at boot and such, so you would know that your graphics card/screen is working?
