CC4 Upgrade - Summer 2010

How many of you are upgrading to CC4 this summer? I guess RM are very busy this time.

I personally wouldn't, we upgraded from CC3 to CC4 last year and I REALLY wish we hadn't!! its awful!

Upgraded one site last summer and am loving CC4.

Was due to do another site this year but the school has decided to hold off, partly to see how the finances pan out for the coming years and also to wait for 2008 and win7 installs

I'm not going to migrate I'm just having a clean install and decommissioning CC3. Just means I will be very busy for the first few weeks. Hopefully I will have a nice shiny clean CC4 system to build up. Got all the essentials Office 2007, CS4 etc Just worried about build times we use Dell GX720,780 etc. Can I do remote builds might have to work over the weekends.

Well yes you can via Local Support Tools but only after an initial build so that you can manage the machines via RMMC.

RM pricing is high but you can get some sponsorship schemes that help to pay towards the cost. We got 50K which payed for our CC4 upgrade.

Ahh I remember the RM upgrade issues with a strange fondness! We went to CC2.4 and it was a nightmare, then upgraded to CC3 and it was also a nightmare. The RM costs are just ridiculous, their hardware, support, installation etc seem to use lottery winning kind of figures.

 

I dont look after the network anymore, we have a very good techie team who will be migrating us to a vanilla M$ network next year. Im glad it is there job, but trust that they will do it well and with less issues than RM caused!

what does CC4 give you that you can't do with vanilla?

It's supported from SR2.

 

CC4 doesn't really offer anything that you cannot do on Vanilla if you're happy to spend time putting together different programs and scripts on a Vanilla network.

We're going to CC4 from CC3 and building the school workstations to XP. So far it's all going smooth .

Both servers are now cc4 commisioned, student data and other files are across.

 

Just a massive dhcp and dns issue now.

 

We run two domains in school, a vanilla for admin, and cc3 (previously) for the students.

One admin server, and two rm servers.

The admin is the forest root, which runs dhcp and dns.

 

The technician tells us that the cc4 server1 has to be the forest root, so swapped dhcp and dns responsiblities over.

Now we get massive network delay on the admin network, and rm machines won't get ip's...........

why not save your self some money and go vanilla on both, and you can do things how you want then?

Based on that post, how can you say he'll save money by going vanilla? Do you know how many working hours he has to setup and manage the network? Do you know whether he's confident enough to setup and manage a Vanilla network? You've seen 'RM' and jumped to conclusions that money can be saved and Vanilla is better. An all too common, and unhelpful, response in RM threads on here.
