Thats a very different matter then! * not backing up and losing - tough, its his choice so dont even attempt to support it. If its school data - is it encrypted (legal requirement)? If not, report him - simple as! * file sharing software - surely you can block it, block the port numbers etc. At the very least, log it and show him the log, copy to his line manager. * damage to machines, could you add a splitter so he doesnt need to unplug ( I know, why should you... ) but log it, and confront him, again involving his line manager. Charge his department for the damage. Basically, if the network is bolted down then it shouldnt be an issue as anything on his computer shouldnt be allowed to do anything naughty. Phil

Agree with all that. As a teacher, whats the problem with using my own equipment? I thought there was an initiative for public sector employees to provide their own IT equipment - it was widely reported about xmas time, although of course I cant find any details now. I can see why network managers get jumpy over this, but if he is a professional then he wont have it full of un suitable material, or unlicensed software and your network should be set up so that it wouldn't let an unauthorised machine do any harm. I dont even see what the issue is about getting an ip address and accessing the web - again if the guy is doing anything wrong then he shouldn't be even in the school and you should have other policies or even just expectations that cover any wrong doing. Of course, log the hell out of all the activity, just in case ;-) Apologies for the poor typing (injured arm!) Phil

That doesnt seem like a particularly good set up, even for testing - but Im way out of date on the specs. Installing Moodle - MoodleDocs Is a basic spec but I think youare exceeding that. Have you tried watching task manager on the laptop when it is in use? Anything obvious? Other than that, Ive no idea - like I say my server side experience is a little dated, if its not the DNS routing then I dont know! Phil

Have you tried a PHP accelator? Where does the DNS get resolved? Is it directly across your network, or does it leave your building? We have had issues where our Moodle access is out via a broadband link and then back in via broadband, instead of direct when using a network machine. There are obvious overheads. Also, what are the specs of the server you are running on? Way back when we were using Moodle 1.9 (might even be earlier), we had speed issues. Sticking in a load of RAM and making sure that the server had enough disk space helped, as did phpaccelarator. Phil

I was told when i fitted them that I would fall off, and sure enough I did, several times - always makes me laugh! After a while, you get used to them, you know when to unclip in advance and also emphasize the lean of the bike when you unclip so you dont fall the opposite way. When its slippy, I swap my pedals for normal ones as its much safer. I read about a guy who fell at 5mph on ice in a CTC magazine, he ended up in hospital and in a wheelchair for 18 months! He was lucky to be alive, he must have really come down hard.

Trying to access many of those folders gives permission denied so I would +1 re the permission issue. Its a sorry state when FTPing a site makes it a no no from in school, but I do sympathise! You are at the end of the help i can offer here, I arent familiar with joomla - I did use it in the early days but got miffed with the joomla/drupal spat so left it alone. I suspect that you have two issues here: 1/ you have transfered the whole site to the wrong directory. Delete everything in your FTP folder and create a simple HTML page. FTP the simple page and get it to display. Try something like: Test page Test page This will confirm where the page should be displayed and doesnt rely on mysql or php. Once you have that working, edit the page to read: Test page <?php phpinfo(); ?> When you refresh the page you should see the php info page. This will confirm that php is working. 2/ Now that you know where to transfer your page to and that php is all ok, transfer the whole site to that directory and try again. There are a number of things that could go wrong: * mysql data base not set up correctly - depending on the page code, it may give you some clues as to what is wrong * a config file somewhere hasnt got the correct settings - again, very much specific to how the site is written. Sorry I cant help further, the issue is that you are trying to transfer a complex and advanced setup but (and with the greatest of respect), you are running before you can walk! My advice is to battle it through, grab some strong coffee and slide up the steep learning curve! Its fun and very rewarding when you get there! Phil

Ive used a kindle fire (rooted with a custom ROM) almost from day one. The 7" form factor is brilliant, fits in your (large) pocket and the development community is quite active. Thats why i jumped at the Nexus 7, Jelly bean looks fantastic, and I already have google music so I would imagine that TV etc wont be too much of an issue. Id go with an S3 and a Nexus 7. The S3 has a pokey processor and is a couple of steps on from the note, but thats just my opinion.

I hear what you are saying re more modern ways of communicating and I always find that the parents that dont need to come are the ones that always turn up, whereas the ones you really need to see are hard to get through the door.

Schools must give you a written report on your child at least once a year. This must include: progress on all the National Curriculum subjects they have studied progress in other subjects and activities general progress and attendance results in any National Curriculum tests and assessments Thats from direct.gov site. Most schools now include progress checks which arent full reports merely a printout of the progress data that the school holds. Unions (well, the NUt anyway), say this only needs to be done once a term, but its becoming increasingly common for it to be every half term. Parents evenings have to be one a year.

We use Moodle, Ive knocked up a course which has eight lessons (topics), each one is populated with several labels to delineate the sections of the lesson. I use a CSS trick to display a tabbed menu (its on the Moodle web site) that runs across the top. The sections are: Objectives and outcomes Starter Main activity Plenary Homework All I do when a teacher wants a new course is copy restore this course into their subject. You have to edit the tabbed menu and close it without making changes so that Moodle updates the links but thats it. Fairly standard, just saves some work and gives less confident teachers a framework to work with.

Im not feeling the impulse to rush out and buy the same way that I used to when i had an iphone. Thats good - my S2 is brilliant and at the moment I dont want to swap. I would look into it though and if it wasnt too expensive, I might switch!

Yep, agree with it being a management issue. It isnt a legal requirement to take a register though, just to register students for two sessions a day ie at the start of the day and at the end (or start of the afternoon session). Having said that, it would be really useful to be able to fire a reminder to staff who have forgotten! Phil

No matter what VLE you choose, you will need to spend time setting it up (There arent really any out of the box VLEs - they may be "ready to use" but they certainly arent in a form that you would actually throw at a class), and also maintaining. They can be very expensive, and there are lots of tales around about how expensive Moodle can work out to be - but you need to factor in a considerable amount of money and time for these two tasks. Go with Moodle, and employ an apprentice who can maintain it for you, it will be better in the long run and you can hire their services out to other organisations. By the way, your list was very comprehensive and actually a really useful checklist for any VLE manager - thank you! Phil
