3s-gtech Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Gahhh! Just been speaking to the garage where my MR2 is currently sat. Rear struts are in need of replacement to pass the MOT. Cost of struts = £350 + labour My daily car just cost £300 to get through an MOT. Month before, my other MR2 cost £300 to get through an MOT. Tax is due on two of them too. It's still cheaper than the depreciation on a new car, but Anyone else having similar joy with their transport?
Chris_in_notts Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 (edited) I love running old cars currently got a 71 beetle has hundreds of problems which im still working through but id still prefer it anyday to a boring modern car tho it doesnt cost me much as I do all my own work, then ive got my love for lowriders which are so unreliable its a joke but I still will always own one as its worth it for the look on peoples faces as you roll by on 3 wheels hahaha £350 seems steep for some struts tho! tmcd35 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Anyone else having similar joy with their transport? My clutch went on the way home last Friday. Had to cycle (15 miles - ouch) to work for most of this week, borrowed my brothers car today . The mechanic mumbled something about a 'flywheel' !?! and then £325-345+VAT. I wouldn't mind but I've just got a years back pay thanks to job re-evalutation. I was going to pay off a credit card. Still, cheaper than buying a replacement car. And it's Tax/MOT are up in June
Arcath Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 i just brought a 2000 ford focus to replace the clio i wrote off and ive got a fair list of little things that need fixing over the weekend, fourtunatley its just passed an MOT so ive got nothing to worry about structure wise

I'm very jealous of your Beetle - without a doubt my dream car....one day :-)
witch Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I'm very jealous of your Beetle - without a doubt my dream car....one day :-) Got my son's 72 beetle sitting on the drive - needs some welding to get it through the MOT but usually once it is on the road it is fairly solid. He's at uni though and can't afford it - so it just sits Got the other son's 89 mini on the drive as well - that has an oil leak... The joys of old cars!
Ste_Harve Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Well i put my car through it's MOT last weekend and to my surprise it passed. Everyone says i'm too fussy about how I like my cars, but this month i've had, MOT, tax, and insurance, and need 4 tyres in next month or two!! Glad to have a car back again instead of borrowing friends cars to get about. I wouldn't have a new car, couldn't get a car i'd like for a reasonably sum of money, would loose too much money on it and most importantly of all newer cars are a lot more restricted on what you can work on it yourself, need a computer to diagnose the ecu faults, where as mine will flash a light at you so many times to tell you what it is!!
daz191 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Not necessarily an old car (2001) but expensive to repair, last month £650 for an alternator!
Midnight Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Well it's the price we pay. I have a 1984 XR3i convertible which is about to cost £200 for brake tensioners & hand brake cable along with some new shoes. My cousin, however, has a Ford Focus ST which cost the thick end of £14,000 second hand, then had a service which cost £740. (Almost what I paid for my car) I like my old banger and it only costs £140 to insure:D
Chris_in_notts Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I'm very jealous of your Beetle - without a doubt my dream car....one day :-) only cost me £330 to buy http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/chris_in_notts/IMG_0027.jpg looks a little lore like this now though it needed abit of love lol the joys of cars http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/chris_in_notts/beets1.jpg heres me half way through thinking what the bloody hell did I start this for http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/chris_in_notts/DSCF4616.jpg
Iain.Faulkner Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 only cost me £330 to buy http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l208/chris_in_notts/beets1.jpg That is stunning! Off to buy Volksworld after work today now :-) My other half wants a Type 2 Bay Camper (not something I'm going to object to and will obviously support :-) ) but it just won't be the same as owning a Beetle.
Robz Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I just bought myself an '02 reg Alfa Romeo 147, its currently going through a service and MOT before I take it off the dealer, lets hope there's no faults like Alfa are famed for
3s-gtech Posted March 25, 2010 Author Posted March 25, 2010 £350 seems steep for some struts tho! Bilsteins, as it's a GT-S The UK cars have rebuildable units, but these are just worn out - as to be expected on an 18 year old car! It's just the timing of it all
Pete10141748 Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 Gahhh! Anyone else having similar joy with their transport? Oh yeah, I must go through about £60 worth of shoes every year from walking everywhere
K.C.Leblanc Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I came home to find a massive dent in the side of my car and a note explaining to recycling lorry had done. I'm minded just not to bother doing anything about it. My car's a complete shed anyway.
sidewinder Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 My tatty escort is in for its MOT in a week or so...think it will fail but hoping its just on minor things - if so that would be 2 years of driving for about £600 all in including substantial welding done last year. If it needs anything major I will be buying something else. I really fancy a Honda CRX
maniac Posted March 25, 2010 Posted March 25, 2010 I have this in my garage, http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j29/mredman/MK1%20Golf/b4901b4d.jpg Sadly not on the road at the moment as the clutch went 2 years ago and I've just never had the money to put her back on the road. On top of that she also needs a fair number of other jobs doing. However, as my current daily driver is on the way out as well, I may well get her fixed soon and use as my daily drive for the summer months Mike
caffrey Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Ahh memories, used to do a lot of work on beetles back in the day, my daughters boyfriend has one now - can't get away from them, considering getting one again! New cars are just as bad, my current is 4 years old and just been for a service which cost me 340 quid, and there was a few faults that aren't covered in my warranty. Seriously considering going back to shedding!
Miscbrah Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Got a '96 Calibra SE5 last spring. http://img.cars.cozot.co.uk/pics/uk/2011/08/21/Vauxhall-Calibra-20Ltr-se5-Auto-Cream-heated-Leathers-Petrol-20110821213011.jpg Since getting it, it's needed a cambelt (£60 part plus water pump and a doddle to fit,) new CTS (£20 odd, screws in) new pair of tyres (£100 ish) and the odd serviceable bit. It's had a new 4-2-1 manifold, uprated filter, PC, Dinitrol, few bits and bobs. King's ransom in fuel though! It never breaks. Ever. And it's gorgeous.
twin--turbo Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 My 2002 Galaxy has had £7 spent on it in the last year. Rob
3s-gtech Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 Forgot about this thread! Still got the same MR2, needed another shed load of work for its MoT including new radiator (and it had been SORN'd for four years) but it's now back on the road. I'd forgotten its appetite for fuel!
synaesthesia Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Wub those Calibras Spent most my latter teens lusting after a metallic blue SE6. Still rocking my 98 Honda Accord. Had to replace the clutch earlier this year, otherwise it;s just had exhaust, brakes and tyres 1
cpjitservices Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 My old man has a 1959 Black 5.9 Ltr Oldsmobile dont see many like this on the road nowadays!
witch Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 The aforementioned Beetle-loving son finally gave in and got a reliable, less gas guzzling, Bora. A strange choice as they are very boring cars. He actually had two and then he reverted and got an old Golf. Currently he has a newer, old Golf and has lowered it, improved the exhaust etc etc. He still runs his VW Audi group, DASVAG and I think he will get another Beetle as soon as he has the money and time to look after it We have just had to buy our daughter a car and ended up with a Y reg Micra. Failed its MOT for some welding and the volume of the horn (!) but a few quid bunged to a friend of aforementioned son got the welding done and a new horn was £15.
Norphy Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Considering that the Bora is a MKIV golf with a boot, surely he'd find a golf just as boring?
