Solidworks - just because its a nightmare to install.

 

I'm really surprised to read that. Solidworks for me was one of the least painful installations ever if only because their documentation was so thorough.

 

For me, the nightmare piece of software was Kaliedos but happily enough I've not seen hide nor hair of it for three years as my college doesn't use it! Phew.

Currently trying to get Solidworks to install at the moment - It won't! We've rebuilt the server countless times with Sever 03, Server 08, 64bit Server 08 and Win XP. We've tried both Solidworks 08 and Solidworks 09 installers. The program seems to give Windows a BSOD and instant hardware reboot halfway through the installation. It seems worse with Windows Updates installed and up to date. And don't get me started on the USB dongle!

 

I'm currently blaming VirtualBox and swearing at VMWare for not release a free desktop VM package and MS for not supporting USB in their VM solutions. I think we have an old Elonex Prosentia 1000 lying around so that can be used as a physical server assuming the program doesn't crash...

Clickview, I love it its great but why they have to have each extra feature as a complete seperate package I dont know. We have clickview, clickview 24x7, clickview wireless, clickview home, clickview linkstart, clickview exchange......

This one's climbing the charts: Adobe Premiere Elements - especially on Win 7 - seems totally unable to exist hapily in a network environment!

 

(I've never trusted Adobe stuff ever since their true type fonts screwed up my Windows 3.11 installation when I was at sixth form - Gaaaah!)

Anything by the TTS Group (ProBotix, Easyview, Log Box, etc). Cheap a$$ crap, often comes with unsigned drivers for teh hardware making it a nightmare to depoly automatically. DOes my head right in!

They do have VMware Player which I think does have USB support and VMware Server (both are free but require a registration to obtain the download links). I use VMware Player at home (and did use server before they messed around with the management console and made it web based)

Got to agree with the Nelson Thornes Packages, i have been fighting with AQA eMathematics modular for quite a while now, got the server install sorted, but can i hell get the client package to go out.

What ever version of Mac server we have on our little mac box... I hate touching it so I won't even bother looking what version it is !

1. Matchware Mediator - Looses pupils work, won't activate and crashes for no reason.

2. Cubase - Crashes all the time.

3. Promissor ALAN Testing - Loads of updates, crashes!!!

 

Nice to see we are not alone with these packages ;P

Dislike, er, seen plenty of software on network/workstations, struggling to find 10% that I like but plenty I hate.

Sibelius 7 - for the sheer audacity of AVID of coming up with a 40+ gb installation that you cannot deploy on the network (comes with no MSI, bad instructions and if you dont install the required HD sound files its sounds terrible, even with these so called improved soundfiles, our students actually tell staff it doesnt sound better than previous versions (5) also)

 

Adobe Flash - Updated way too much, barely a month goes by without needing to redo the installation MSI

 

Those are probably the biggest pains of the last year, adobe is there because when you let it get behind current versions, usually then we get things like youtube not working.

It's also the first piece of software I've come across that won't install on XP, which is annoying (we're going 7 over the summer)

is closer i believe. One school ive had to remove the check for updates bit as even as admin it failed (after taking 20+ mins only way i could get it to work again was find the 1 pc it worked on and copy the sims .net dir to a pen drive and copy that back to every workstation all this so in most cases users can tick 30 boxes twice a day

+1 for Vista. Now we have 7 Enterprise on EES we're on a mission to eliminate all traces of ME's devil child from our network!

 

I'll add in secureassess, each time we come to do an online exam it seems to throw up errors. We fix the errors, pupils sit the exams, next round of exams come along, software is tested again (updates run if needed) and hey ho errors again, etc, etc.....

I'd add Parent Call / Truancy Call, and the obvious SIMS - 'reason code 0', why not 'database not found - check your network connection'. I guess it wouldn't help anyway as nobody reads error messages - they just panic and call IT support.
