Much as I'd like a car I can legally fall asleep in - unworried by idiots driving cars - I think the insurance and safety problems mean they are further off than most people think. Also, I suspect they will increase traffic levels (and congestion) as they drive around empty collecting people / things. This may be offset by closer inter car distances in moving traffic. I'd love to not own a car - mine sits there depreciating / costing £ in tax & insurance for days on end.

RM resold BT FTTC in one of my schools. Started off at about half the promised (but not enforcable) speed and over time went down further to a mere dribble of data. Cue support call, speed went up to more than the original install speed. If you can get virgin fibre, it'll get you away from ancient copper issues.

Policy Central (and impero) are client programs. Best practice is to mitm ssl connections and cover all devices on the network, not just those which have the right client program running. That's iceni, smoothwall, whatever.

irfanview is a very light (& quick) photo viewer which has an excellent batch conversion mode. Free too.

I don't think I've seen this discussed here, but somebody's been gaming google to get some the views of some rather unsavoury groups to the top of search results. Given how many children unquestioningly trust the first items that come back, it's really worrying. Google "did the holocaust happen" or see what autosuggest comes back with if you type "are muslims" or "are women" queries. Also Google responds on skewed Holocaust search results - BBC News https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/17/holocaust-deniers-google-search-top-spot I'm not one for censoring search results, but pagerank is clearly vulnerable to manipulation which makes it return barefaced lies.

So, cloud backing up people - are you encrypting your backups? Are the keys on the cloud server or kept at your end?

Leicester city got leds a year or two ago. Cross the border into the county and they have old sodium lights which often get turned off at night. I know which I prefer.

You'll quickly get sucked into (paying for) RM Unify and connecting your ad to their cloud. They refer to user group based filtering as "granular" and it's not been out long (if it's out yet - I gave up waiting). Diladele - great if you can get authentication working, but one of the things that swung it for smoothwall here was the ease of getting it talking to ad for auth. They also cut us a good deal.

There's a robocopy trick. Google 'robocopy long filenames'.

I've used wordpress internally on a linux server vm. Works well but setting up individual usernames for kids is a bit of a pain. I tweaked the perms so they could publish pages. Used backwpup to back it up with a cron script to copy it to the dc where it gets onto our main backups.

Side note - Rubular: a Ruby regular expression editor and tester is very useful for testing regex's.

Just be aware that Giffgaff like to have an annual no-service day. The causes vary (flooding, failed updates iirc) but you just have to sit tight until their engineers finish sweating.

If they're going to end up in a cupboard, send them here. We have a server with about a dozen 2.5" drive slots. It could make a nice freenas backup device with 6 drives in a 3Tb raid 1. Might even try zfs on it..

Did you have any problems getting squid to talk to upstream proxies? I can't get diladele to play nicely with RM's proxys. Any config file snippets appreciated.

We did easymail -> gafe. So much better and the complaints stopped. Braver members of staff use google apps every now and then. I migrated some accounts with imapsync, great little tool.

At home? None. No windows machines (except unimportant VMs). Linux Mint instead.

Security - wordfence. Closes a bunch of holes and lets you know about plugin updates and login attempts. BackWPUp - automated backup to a choice of destinations on schedule. Both free.
