Now all we need is "1 reason to wear a tie"

I can think of two - neither are daily occurances (I hope ;)) - Job interviews and funerals.

EDIT: Just noticed the poll doesn't have and option for 'clip on' :o

But wouldn't you like to discover and read about the history of the other eighty-four methods John?! ;) No? Maybe knot :)

Not in a mean way but what about "Get Knotted" :p lol

Easier to buy one of those clip on ones that is always tied :)

Rarely wear one.

Can vouch for John's tie-ishness - he came here once (I think it was the first time any of us had met 'im) and was known as "the chap with the wallace & grommit tie" for some time after :)

(Though there is some debate - some members of team SmoothWall swear it was a disney tie - can you clear this up for us John?)

Whenever I wear a tie to work people ask if I'm going to an interview. Shame really, as I've got quite a few and hardly ever get to wear them.

When I do though, full windsor.

Clip on ties! Oh dear gentlemen, your standards are slipping!

I always did up my school tie with a half-Windsor (then switched to velvet ribbon for sub-fusc, so much more feminine).

When it comes to undoing them, nothing beats a bow tie, atop a dress shirt and under a DJ ...

Ummmm....I spent the last 10 years wearing a DJ, dress shirt and bow tie, for work!

They look very glamorous, until you're wearing it every day!!! Though, even if I say so myself.....one does look very good in a tux!!!!

Awww thats a nice way of remembering people :) It was a Wallace and Gromit Tie so give those staff a chocolate hobnob on us. (It was for a job intereview the first time I met the team in the office at Leeds hence the suit and tie didn't think Jeans and T-Shirt were the most appropriate for that occasion).

I've got about 10 different Wallace and Gromit Ties but I'm currently known as the guy with the Underground map on his tie at work as I quite like that tie :) But the range is wide and has a great many options.

That's not a reason, just tradition. Tradition being defined as "something you use when you don't have reason"

Hi I am trying to get the book "The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie" ISBN 1-84115-249-8 but it seems to be £150 on Amazon. I just what to know if this is the price.

Sounds like an interesting read :bored:

Hardcover for £50 new.

The book basically covers the history of ties/neckerchiefs, and the mathematical proof that there are only 85 ways to tie them. Only 13 of these actually look any good.

I don't actually own any ties at all. I've never had to wear one being female although I am intrigued now... maybe I should buy one and find out! Although I might look waaaaay too smart for the office... hmm.

Half Windsor for me. However, it doesn't work if you've got a wide tie since the knot then looks like some sort of small mammal is having a go at your Adam's Apple. Full Windsor only works with a silk tie, for the same reason. Four in hand always looks a bit wonky, slips to one side, and looks rubbish with a thin tie.

Save yourself money and disappointment by just reading the Wikipedia article on the book instead, which lists the useful knots in shorthand form: The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Once you work out how the shorthand relates (takes a few minutes) it's all you need, taught me to tie the Windors. I'm a half-windsor man now rather than 4 in hand, the knot looks so much chunkier and neater - although not on the level of DaveP's image above (although you've already had rep off me today for the Batman image, Dave, so you'll have to make do with that for now!)

Yes I noticed. Thanks for the REP+
