If only that were true of everyone!

It seems there are some here who only post at all when it is an opportunity to flame, troll or generally stir up trouble.

Maybe its time to remove people who never contribute anything useful?

So I make an observation regarding the membership numbers and put it up for discussion, you do not like it so I should be removed?

If you read the post, that is not what I said at all. I said "people who never contribute anything useful" - which may or may not include you, I don't follow your entire posting history - should be removed.

It just seems there are some people who only ever post things to argue or be contentious and this is unsettling the whole community at the moment.

I suspect many members (me included) only post when they feel they have something worthwhile to say.... I read far more threads here than I could/would ever want to contribute to. In many threads I am in awe of the technical knowledge of some people and I am only too grateful to be able to tap into their knowledge for free through Edugeek.

Did you know, ringofflame, that 3.8% of your posts could be classed as technical...

About the same again are general chat type topics.

The rest of like this one - being critical, negative or as some would say 'troll like'.

We can all create random statistics. Why do it? What value did this topic add other than being negative and critical? Does it make Edugeek a better place? Does it help anyone?

Trying to get edugeeks to rage, best to ignore these types of threads ;-)

I use Edugeek like Wikipedia with a hint of Yahoo Answers, I search for things, I ask things and contribute where I can. It has a wealth of info within the forums & Wiki relavent to the edu sector - i've not seen anywhere close with the info i need, plenty of technical sites on the web like expert exchange but none like Edugeek... although, I would say Edugeek is an expert exchange for the edu sector.

Size is relative... this isn't necessarily aimed at every IT Tech in the world - educational IT workers are probably the primary audience, consider that maybe a school has 2-3 IT Techs... it has quite a large audience...

Edugeek boasts almost 22,000 members. If you take into account the number of members with a post count of 100 or more only 2.6% of members currently make regular contributions. Food for thought.

That’s still over 500 regular contributors. There are allot of very competent techs on this forum and it is by far the most useful tech forum I’ve come across and I post on a few. I also find that you get an answer/response very quickly on Edugeek which allot of users/members find reassuring. As stated above allot of people read and learn from the posts on here and possibly don’t contribute very often that doesn’t mean they can’t be considered important (they generate ad revenue ;))

I think that on many forums the poster:lurker ratio is quite low too.

Of course on many forums the troll: poster ratio is a lot higher than here, which is why the OP's contributions always stick out like a sore thumb as they're so unusual (and blatent!) :)

I think it's quite healthy that that poster:lurker is low!

If you take a look at good old fashioned books, they're written by one person and read by thousands (millions??) but we don't worry about the fact that only one person has contributed to the book.

Edugeek is more than a 1 person, static book but if it gets to the point where all xxx thousand users are contributing every day then it will become unusable - you'll just be buried the input!

*yawn* Good morning.

So I am to be labeled a troll? Meh. The fact some members agree with some of my musings would suggest otherwise. I was also chatting with a mod just the other evening who even agreed with some of my views. Read into that what you will.

Oh and thank you to the coward who gave me some rep with the following comment - "Thinking doesn't appear to be your strong suite. I'd stick to food."

That's a bit out of order, personal insults aren't going to get anybody anywhere (aimed at whoever sent you the rep)

I posted this - A Group is its Own Worst Enemy a couple of years ago. At the time I thought it might be a little dated (circa 2003), but in parts it appears pertinent to the current situation. I don't believe what Shirky sets out is immutable, simply looking at the circumstances as they were then, but the piece might provide the basis for working out a route forward from the current imbroglio.

I haven't posted much. I visit every day and spend quite some time in the forums. I post when I feel that either I have a point to make or I can help someone.

I think the best thing to do when threads like this are started is not to even reply to it.. just leave it with a reply count of zero

Edugeek is such an amazing place. Every technician I talk to who doesn't know about edugeek, or at least isn't signed up to it, I always tell them to get themselves on here. The amount of times I've found an answer to something that's had me stuck for ages.

Unfortunately, as is the same in a lot of places now, people can't see a good thing for what it is. They would rather try and pull it down, upset it's users and generally cause trouble.. Why can't you leave a good thing be !!!

I visit several times a day but tend to only post when I have questions to ask or knowledge to share.

EduGeek is a valuable resource to 1000's IT Professionals, just because everyone doesn't have 100's of posts, it doesn't mean they don't contribute and it doesn't mean that the site isn't as large as it thinks!

I will tend to stay in Edugeeks in the background all the time I am at work. Got to admit that lately I have found topics like this mildly interesting but mostly pointless.

I use this site to help in my day to day work as there are often questions that arise from all the schools I support that I don't always know the answer to. Equally there are things that I may have though about doing which I can get info on. I am also more than happy to post replys to problems that others are having, as a problem shared is a problem halved.

The moderation on the site is of no real concern to me although I love the fact that this is such an open site. If there are questions regarding the income streams that the site generates then they are of little worry to me as I would expect someone to have to run the whole thing

When you post inflammatory topics, with little substance, then fail to reply to the comments (why arbitrary numbers? what about bounce rates, lurkers etc? what about your own posting record, as a set of statistics? etc), but instead focus on the fact that someone has inferred or directly said you seem like a troll, yes, you will be labelled as a troll.

As another poster has said - if you were maybe using the site for its intended purpose - asking questions, posting answers and helping people, then maybe you'd realise that it *is* a good resource and you wouldn't spend your time posting topics such as this.
