  2. Hello We have problems playing audio files from with in classroom using a chrome browser on a pc. We can play ok direct from a chromebook, using same class and same audio file. On pc we get error " whoops! there was a problem playing this audio file." I can select open in new window and then open with music player for google drive to play the file but wondered if the file should just play when first opened from the classroom. is this open with music player for google drive the workaround that others use? Thanks
  3. Hello Has anyone got activcast enabled and working across a vlanned network? currently we make use of chromecasts and apple tvs across our vlans for wifi devices using ruckus bonjour gateway and works ok. new activpanels here this summer and i want to make use of the activcast app from our chromebooks and windows laptops. using a domain admin account i can launch the activcast chrome extension from chrome on windows laptop and connect. using same windows laptop as a domain user i cannot connect to activpanel. it does not find device, says offline. from a chromebook i cannot find the activpanel device at all. the activpanel is in vlan70 windows laptops are in vlan50 chromebooks are in vlan75 there is a smoothwall acting as default gateway in amongst things that i wonder if there is firewall rule blocking some traffic for standard users. anyone got this working successfully? thanks
  4. Hello Looking for thoughts and opinions on wcbs schoolportal. Recent wcbs users here and looking to add a parent portal, any alternatives to think about? thanks
  5. Hi steven did you ever get this resolved - this has been mentioned to me today and just about to start looking into it.. thanks
  6. We are thinking of a BYO Ipad solution for pupils. Our thinking is any pupil ipad will be added to wireless network via mac authentication and a password which will be entered for them. This will save us from having to do any management of the device and not dealing with itunes accounts and locking it down etc. Using our smoothwall transparent filter each pupil ipad will be on a filtered internet feed. Pupil ipads will have access via filebrowser to their network folder and via a print server in the vlan to all network printers. This seems like an easier solution than configuring and locking down school bought devices. Classroom management will have to deal with brought in images \ videos but that is done anyway for phones etc. We are assuming that the ipads will be running nothing nasty via the app store. Other netbooks and laptops will have guest access only and only access to Internet again via smoothwall ssl login page.
  7. Hi Stuart, Here are the 2 screen shots. wlan and acl. I got the 9.2 from my account manager who has now contacted me to tell me to rollback as its not for public consumption. Hope you can point me in the right direction as to what is stopping me getting guests to access web. Cheers Miller
  8. Hello Running ruckus zd, build 9.2.0.0 build 138, all aspects working fine for domain based devices - authentication and access to internet via proxy. But for guest devices i cannot browse the internet and i think i have narrowed the problem down to my L3\4\Ip address access list. Can anyone tell me what allow rules they have created to allow guest devices to get internet access. I have the dns and dhcp rules that were there by default and i have also added rules to the gateway and proxy server but i cannot access internet. Maybe its a protocol i need to allow access to? If i change the default rule from deny to allow, all guest users can get internet access via the transparent proxy, so i must be missing an allow rule but i cannot think what. As soon as i change back to deny access drops. Network is vlanned and the guest users are getting the correct ip address range and correct gateway. The vlans do not have any access lists on them just for grouping devices. Thanks Miller
  9. Dont have any existing Cisco kit and comparing replacement HP kit costs supplied by a supplier against the quote for a full network refurb including installation of Cisco kit, the cisco kit is only £4k more expensive and thats with it installed. My time and effort or the extra £4k and the ability to get on with other things in the summer? I had every intention going with procurve for this project but this quote has kinda turned my head abit as it competitive. What i want the kit to do is to provide in time 10g backbone functionality, poe for possible ip telephone system, video integration, etc. Current core switch is 10\100 hp switch, many years old with 1 gig fibre. Switch capabilites on the other hand, vlans, efficient power management (got to be seen to be green!), and controlling guest access for wifi access. Ruckus will be implemented in future aswell. So maybe this feature is not really needed. Warranty is the limited lifetime warranty, power supply and fan are 5 years warranty. Should i look to HP or get the perceived better Cisco equipment with bells and whistles for the small difference? We are a private school not LEA funded or anything so its up to me to justify the cost. Thanks Miller
  10. Hello Does anyone currently run any Cisco Catalyst 2960s switches? Thoughts and opinions, good or bad welcome. Hows the noise level? I have a reasonable quote, to do a competitive buyout of my current switches, core and edge and the quote is for these cisco catalyst ones. Quote includes config and installation and the years annual maintenance. Its a hefty price but i would class it as reasonable as i priced up individually online the switches quoted and could not get them as cheap. One other thing i would opinions on is the frequency of any cisco IOS updates, how common are they and how easy to install? Is it worth continuing to pay after the year is up for access to cisco support? Thanks for any advice. Miller
  11. Hey Limbo Thanks a lot, that worked a treat. Two tables, join them and then a query, export into excel, bingo. That will save me a lot of time. Cheers Miller
  12. Hi I can do this manually but wondering if there is a macro or some other automatic way to do this. I have two columns of data: Pupil ID | Set ID 8007 P6CEA 8011 P6CED 8014 P6CEM 8016 P6CFR 8026 P6CHB 8027 P6CHE 8031 P6CHG 8057 P6CLE 8206 P6CLS 8131 P6CMN 8083 P6CRE 8089 P6CSC 8304 P6CSG 8230 P6CTE 8181 8246 8470 8454 8664 8611 I want to take this and change it so that each pupil id is listed against each individual set id once. Eg: 8007 P6CEA 8007 P6CED 8007 P6CEM 8007 P6CFR 8007 P6CHB 8007 P6CHE 8007 P6CHG 8007 P6CLE 8007 P6CLS 8007 P6CMN 8007 P6CRE 8007 P6CSC 8007 P6CSG 8007 P6CTE Then do the same for the next pupil id, and so on until each pupil is associated once with each set id. I can do this manually but it takes too long. Is there an easier way to sort the data this way? Thanks Miller
  13. Hello I am looking to put together a 3 year network upgrade plan to put to the powers that be. Ive attached two files, one showing current layout and the one i want to put to them. I believe the current fibre cables are OM1. They were all installed before i got here and no documentation on the installs. However checking out the cable it looks like OM1 on what i can make out. Looking for advice and an extra pair of eyes to look at it basically. The school layout is split over 3 old seperate buildings, and multiple portacabins and different levels. Alot of fibre has been run but the core switch is an old Hp4104 with 10\100 ports, which is a bottle neck. Im not necessary wanting to recommend renewing fibre runs where there are existing ones, especially between the buildings. The buildings are seperated by a road and private land on each side. Also the runs between cabinets in the buildings are fairly long and complicated, so it would really add to the cost to renew the cabling with OM3. So im going to have to stick to the existing OM1 cabling. Is this wrong though? Im looking to recommend replacing all the switches over the 3 years and replace the two copper runs with new fibre. The server room is far away from the core switch and is on copper back to the nearest switch but i want to install a new cabinet and switch and run fibre from the core switch to it, a good 75\100m run. Also i want to do a similar thing with the office switch. This is connected over copper all the way from ground floor to top floor and is in a cupboard! Replace with cabinet and new switch and fibre run. Ive proposed replacing the switches with HP ones as the core switch and edge switches have been here for donkeys days and have worked well, so thought it best to stick with whats worked for you. But is there anything else i should do? What about stack management? Is it useful? should i look to stack the new switches, does it improve performance? Any help greatfully received. 14. Hi Currently starting to investigate\plan for migration to Windows 7 \ Server 2008 from fully xp \ 2003 domain and hit a problem straight away. We are an independant school and usually just purchase licences as and when we need them; we are not part of any schools agreement. I contacted an agency, well a national government body here in scotland, where we get education prices to ask for prices for windows 7 pro and ultimate and was told that the Ultimate Licences are not suitable for use in schools. They are for Student and Home use only? Is this correct? My plan was to install Windows 7 Pro on all desktops but then use Ultimate on the small number of staff laptops to make use of bitlocker. Im confused, can anyone advise if what i have been told is true? Is anyone running Ultimate in school on school networks? or is it Pro only? Thanks gmiller
  15. Thanks Leco, means it something local to me then. Joy!

  18. Hello, This is probably very easy for web developers or coders out there but i aint got a clue, hope someone can help. I have an asp web page with a table. The table consists of 2 columns, target grade and now grade for each pupil for a subject. A teacher will enter a target grade say 2, and then at a predetermined month enter the pupils actual "now" grade but instead of being easy and entering 2 or 1 or 3 or whatever they want to enter +1 or -1 or 0. This bit is fine. The bit i need help for is this: depending on what value is entered in the table cell, the cell background colour is to change. eg +1 = BLUE 0 = GREEN -1 = RED Can anyone help? I am thinking it might be an IF statement i need but i do not have a clue. Heres the code i have so far: Thanks in advance! h4>English: Dec S3 Apr S3 Nov S4 Feb S4 Initial Target Target Now Target Now Target Now Target Now " " " " " " " " " Miller
  19. Hello Jose We had this previously, once it was because we had added the ucas sites to the proxy bypass list but then i upgraded to school guardian and the old route was not available, so removed the bypass entry in gpo. Second time more recent was an internal dns issue. Smoothie box could see the site but clients could not. Added smoothie ip address as dns forwarder and could connect. If you get access to the smoothie command line or the ip tools can you ping apply2.ucas.com? Smoothie support are v good, contact them. miller

    Virus or No Virus?

Hi Thanks for the answers. Will clean the keys and recommend the user gets an av for the mac. Anyone recommend a good one for a mac? I will search the forum in the meantime. Cheers Miller ** Update** Told staff member to download http://www.clamxav.com/ and run it - she has reported back this morning that there was some kind of autorun virus on her mac. A good warning to others about the possible transfer from unprotected macs to pcs via usb keys. Thanks again!

    Virus or No Virus?

Hi Last week on two seperate occasions i had the kaspersky av server dish out virus warnings. After investigating turns out the warnings were for the same user and for two different usb keys. Problem is she is running a mac at home and that the usb keys were brand new and only touched her mac and pcs in school. Kaspersky flagged up the following: E:\RECYCLER\recycld.exe Event Detection of viruses, worms, Trojans, hack tools happened on computer in the domain at Fri Sep 18 08:07:05 2009 File E:\autorun.inf: detected virus 'Worm.Win32.AutoRun.gsx'. User: , computer: localhost. My query is this, is kaspersky just wrongly flagging up an autorun exe as a virus or is it a virus? The user does not have any av at home on the mac. Are there any known mac viruses about? a Kaspersky search points me to here - Viruslist.com - Worm.Win32.Autorun.cpe but its for windows. On all domain pcs i have disabled autorun and exe being run via gpo. I dont know whether i need to chase this any more or put it down to kasperksy doing its job. Should i advise the staff member to get an av for a mac? The usb key is not useable on the computer as it does not load. I might give her a new usb key that way i will know it was clean when i gave it to her and the ones i give out do not have any software to load to run. Any pointers? miller
  22. The fibre issue was not the cause of the problem. DHCP problem was!.. Restarted the dhcp service, all clients now being allocated an ip address.. Miller
  23. the fibre on this switch links to the main core switch, tracing the connection on the switch (an hp 4104 gl) the fibre at the other end reports dead aswell.
  24. Hi Folks, First day back in after holiday and yes you guessed it straight into problems.. welcome back! A lot of client pcs cannot connect to the network. Traced it to the switch, netgear GS748TS. On the switch it looks like one of the fibre links is down. I have disabled and reenabled the port, swapped over the modules and it appears to be one of pair fibre cables, which will be fun to trace as its an old building and it goes up stairs! Anyway. my question, why would some clients connect to the network ok and get an ip address ok that are patched in to this switch ghile others wouldnt? For example in the library there are 7 pcs. 2 get an ip and 5 others dont. would the fibre link being down have this kind of impact? I would have thought, the clients would have continued to pick up a connection but the speed would be impacted as data is going over one pair instead of the two pair? I dont get why some ports\clients are ok and others are not. Any suggestions? Please enlighten me as switching and fibre are not my strong points.. Thanks Miller
  25. Thanks, force download?? what version of moodle are you using? using 1.8.9+ here. I dont see the force download option when setting up the link. Upgrade needed? miller Just found this on moodle docs.... From Moodle 1.9 onwards, you can choose whether to force files stored in Moodle to be downloaded, rather than being displayed in the browser window. Will upgrade. Miller
