Nope setting background is different but they cant play around with shortcuts.

 

It's redirected using group policy redirected folders where you can redirect the desktop folder to induvidual folders per user or one folder for everyone (staff) , so I redirect it to a "read only" network folder, working offline is a pain and mobsync will try and sync any created offline files on the desktiop with a read only folder, so any software we deploy places isons on the "all users desktop" on the local machine.

 

But they are always told not to save stuff to the desktop, anyways ;-)

It is set to use a maximum of 400mb as per the default. Everyone has full write permissions on the usercache folder.

 

Granting everyone write access to a folder under Program Files might be a problem for those using Software Restriction Policies to prevent students launching unauthorised executables/scripts. I would suggest you move the cache to a folder on the root (eg c:\GoogleEarthCache), or possibly the all users application data folder (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data) and set the necessary permissions.

Why use google earth when you can use Flashearth it uses the google mapping, or the microsoft mapping with or without labels, runs fairly quickly and doesn't need a program (apart from flash) installed to use it! We use it in our school as an good alturnative to installing google earth on every workstation.

or just use Microsoft's Live Local system which requires no downloads for standard and aerial mapping. http://local.live.com IMHO a much better product

Google Earth does ALOT more then either site. If you want a map or the basics use them but google earth does offer alot more functionality tbh.

I suppose it depends what you want to do with it, but flashearth provides full postcode search, longdetude and lattitude references and you can send a link to a particular location to anyone you want to which is very handy. I've not used google earth for ages, so don't know how much extra functionality there is in it, but flashearth does everything we need of it.

Google earth has a large Teacher following. The many add ons and personalisations possible in GE make it a great teaching tool for may lessons. See Doug Belshaws take on it.

I just got msi from ZeroHour looks good. But I just found that with the current version 4.1.? an msi is placed in the %temp% folder during install. I've only tested it on a VM so far it works with the /qb switch, next step a real GP install.

Yeh I have not upgraded the msi yet. Waiting to see what happens with the sounds layer which could mean a new version anyway. This build has had no issues reported so far.

Thanks for the MSI ZeroHour. Is there anyway I can edit the MSi using ORca or something so that the default usercache is in a different location? Drive C is hidden from our users so the program shows an error everytime they load at the moment.

You can just alter the registry key as part of the user login process Andi.

Well you could use an MSI Transform if you really wanted to. I think it's overkill though.

I'd rather get it all sorted from the original install than use a script as there's less to remember when it starts going wrong then.
