How do I go about changing my Forum User Name, as I don't want to abandon this account and create a new one, but want to change it to remove my current place of work from it (a mistake a shouldn't have really made in the first place in hindsight). Also, once I move on to newer and better things (ie a school not fortunate enough to miss out on enforced BSF IT), it would be nice to not have an old school referenced in my user name.

i wanted to go down the clustered SAN route, but didn't have the money. If I did have the money I'd have gone with two storage servers with Windows Storage Server on or Server 2008 R2 with Starwind Server iSCSI targets that do support clustered environments. Link the servers with 10gb (or even bonded 10gb) LAN connections (possibly even 10gb fibre to host one SAN in a different building to meet disaster recovery requirements - along with possibly one or more 2008 R2 cluster servers hosting Hyper-V)

this has been a pain here too - it's something to do with a profile being created on a pc with a "problem" mediaplayer 11 on - once the profile is deleted and recreated it seems to work ok

I rarely think of the two separately, which is probably why I don't use DFS as much as I should

The problem with DFS for profile shares when you roaming profiles is hat the user can logoff one machine and logon to another before the data has replicated to another server (unless you speficy a preferred server)

Hmmm, DFS for profile storage? Yes I seem to remember getting my fingers burnt with that one a while back. I have Unlocker installed on the XP computers and I have, on occasion, attempted to delete the "offending" profile folder only to be told that the spooler has the file open

I build the image (both xp and win7 x64) via MDT 2010 and then use WinPE called via WDS (or on a second partition) to then download the image. Scripts handle joining domain and computer naming

Yes sometimes the user hive tool works. I think it might also be related to anti-virus or print spooler issues that prevent all the local user settings from being deleted

There IS an issue with the latest ABTutor (6.6.3). We have it on a number of IT suites and get similar (and worse issues) 1. The admin computer will lose connectivity to one or more clients 2. If any web related policy is in place prior to login then a random number of machines (1 up to 5 or 6 RANDOM computers) will have their group policies blocked so students don't get locked down desktops. 3. Sometimes when viewing clients their screen won't appear or is black The second fault above is repeatable - every time, but you can't predict which computers it will affect - only ones with web blocking policies in place, though The network is Windows 2008 R2 domain, the clients are all XP

Our school has an externally hosted Exchange server. The workstations are windows xp. Staff have roaming profiles and I'm using a prf file to configure their email, which works fine - they open Outlook, are prompted for password (twice the first time they use outlook) and log in fine (only requiring one login each time after that). Students have mandatory profiles and when they log in to Outlook it prompts them for their password twice. I know this is down to the profile being created each time and I also know that you can't build the outlook configuration into the mandatory profile as it will try to connect to the exchange account used when configuring the mandatory profile. So, how do we get round the double login or do I just tell the students to put up with it?

Why not configure Time Machine to backup to your NAS box? I'm currently running a test with a MAC OSX 10.5.8 that is successfully backing up (and restoring) to/from a netgear readynas 1100. Once I'm happy with it, I'll be configuring all the Macs (and probably the XServe, too) to use the NAS box

We're suddenly having a weird issue here and, not being in any way a mac expert, i have no idea how to fix it. Our Setup: Server 2008 R2 Domain Apple XServe Macs connected to Open Directory and Active Directory. Macs and XServe on one VLAN, Windows servers on another Up until yesterday everything worked fine. However, now if you login with an Active Directory account internet access is really really slow (via all the proxy servers we have). Straight away I thought this must be a DNS issue, but if you log in on the same mac with the local admin account (pointing to the same proxies) it works fine. I've tried unbinding and rebinding to Active Directory - no difference I've checked access via Windows computers using the same users and logins - no difference What is the next option?

Thanks for the offer - do you accept school purchase orders? In this place I'd have to pay for it myself and i'd be lucky to get any money back. I'm hoping not to have to order a replacement waste toner collector - i'm sure there must be a way to reset the counter or something

we use laptopbits too - but i've found the keyboards a little on the expensive side, so I'm looking elsewhere for those

We've got one of these printers and it's been running great. However, we now have a couple of issues: 1. It is reporting that the Waste Toner Collector is full (it's not and it's been replaced a short while back) - is there a way of resetting the count on it? 2. We get a JAM B reported if printing from the lower tray, but we don't have a SERVICE manual to identify which part to replace (it would cost £600-£1000 for a full maintenance kit). Can anyone help?

for SIMS updates, staff will need full access to the SIMS folder AND the sims.ini in c:\windows I seem to recall from past experience

I have DHCP across three servers with each server dishing out a third of each subnet's IP addresses. The three Domain Controllers also have DNS and the server roles split between them. Two of the servers have WINS and two have NPS. It works fine and I can easily take a server down for updates, etc. However, we did have an issue a while back that trashed Active Directory - so I used it as an oportunity to completely rebuild AD from scratch (up until then it had just "evolved" over a few years)

We currently backup to an Intel 10TB storage server in a separate building to the servers. Monday to Thursday: incremental Friday: full We have a two week rotation. Also we use Volume Shadow Copy for recovering user files that go back a few months (I can't remember the last time I had to get any files from the backup server)

I usually create AD groups for each printer and add users/computers to those groups - the groups are used by GPO item level targetting to assign printers (it works for users and computers)

As few as possible is the best way - less confusion and easier to manage. It's even better with Server 2008 and item level targetting. I have one main computer and user policy, one policy for staff, one for students (both these just have a couple of items in that i caouldn't do so easily from the one policy, plus one for the servers. There may be a couple of other minor policies, but that's it.

Pricing for this is a nightmare - we use Forefront on our servers (it's really good and has a small footprint). You can't just buy x client licences. It has to be x client licences over the duration of your Select (or other) agreement, plus you have to buy and SQL 2005 licence (it doesn't work with SQL 2008) and i think there is also a licence required for the management console. It does work out cheaper in the long run for a large organisation, but not really for a few machines (we were on the low side - 30 licences, i think, so didn't work out so cheap). You can save money if you already have an SQL 2005 licence (it also won't work on Express or Workgroup editions)

Tried that one - with and without the broadcast address being specified. Still doesn't work. The issue is something to do with the HP5412 procurve switch (it's a layer 3 switch), but every bit of info i've found and tried regarding this switch doesn't seem to work

Right, probably got most of the information in the title I've tried with various wake-on-lan programs (wol.exe, mc-wol.exe and a few others) and it works fine for PCs in the same VLAN, but not across VLANs. The HP 5412 is our core switch and is configured for routing and to forward broadcasts, plus I've tried udp port forwarding from the "sending" VLAN to the "receiving" VLANs broadcast address. Has anyone successfully managed to do this with these switches (especially the 5412) and, if so, can they post the relevent parts of their switch config files to show me what I'm doing wrong?
