I can confer that this works very well.. had a blonde moment and forgot our DIRadmin password and this got me out of a whole load of trouble

Set up a new workgroup in workgroup manager .. add the AD users as individuals rather than via their windows group.. boom new workgroup. Dont forget to change where Apple Workgroup manager "looks" for users in the right hand panel to your AD

usual suspects in no particular order... DNS .. can the macs do both forward and reverse dns lookups to your AD and time .. do your macs use the same time server as you DC .. or even point to DC for time, does DHCP push out search domain? You may need to talk to your AD admin

Jump onto the lightspeed wiki fella and create an account loads of great info and user guides to all aspects of lightspeed. . We are a lightspeed champion school so any info you need just ask .. The MDM is very easy to use .. If you are managing iPads be sure to read the apple iOS configuration guide for education

Hi We are happily running 10.8 server on a full OD domain and I can confirm its stability is good. WGM remains for 10.8 and does a good job for fine tuning those areas that Profile Manager still cannot control. I would thoroughly recommend getting on an apple server course .. or at the very least get the OSX Server book by Arek Dreyer. Its a great way of making sure you are setup the "apple" way.

Hi there, my first question is does the user have a home drive set in their AD profile? The AD bind tool relies on this to "pull" the drive mapping onto the mac .. You can map the shares to the users desktop at login using the login items section of the users and groups user prefernce on the mac starter for 10

Hi I recently went on a mountain lion server course. The upshot is that in Mountain lion the whole AD / Profile /My DOcuments Sync is not really recommended. The instructor (keeping tying to a minimum) basically said that the best way was to happliy have users authenticate to AD but to make sure they had a local mac profile and then at the end of a lesson they uploaded their work back to a share (ie mount their windows homedrive if you have to) The preferred option is to almost keep mac and windows networks separate and create users storage on a mac server, but again do not have profiles copying back and forth.

Some interesting debate going on here. The postings by python IMHO may have some truth, but.... I have recently spent a goodly amount of time with both the Essa NM (Not the managed Service techs) as we are implementing a 1:1 solution ourselves using iPad Mini. He was happy to admit that it was not all rosy in the garden but .. like us, they are moving to a Lightspeed MDM solution, allowing much greater control of the devices. Their network load is mainly web traffic as most services are now cloud based apart from a Citrix env for SIMS access. Staff laptops, student devices etc are not tied to traditional corporate networking ie most IT users in the building do not login to pull shared drives etc.. My first tour was the corporate thang, however further visits have been more informal and info gathering, and it is for me at least, the fact that on the further visits it is evident that the tech is a means to an end and not "on show" proves that the approach can work. Guys this is about pedagogical change and transforming learning . It has to be led by a well planned strategy stemming from an SLT that is committed to making these changes through careful planning and delivery. A great deal of time in planning and prep has been taken here and wether right or wrong education cannot stand still.
