garethEds Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 We've been told in school today by an HMI inspector who was at a meeting last week (or the beginning of this week) with Capita that there is to be a SIMS module for the iPhone. Apparently this is in development. I've just read a post by Russ which outlines discussion from Capita (cannot remember his name on here - is it Phil?) about the vision of using iPods/iPhones - apparently it is happening. I have no other information about it - just saying. I wouldn't mind testing it with our SIMS. GJE
EduTech Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Yeah this was mentioned a while back now, and is in development! :-) I wouldn't mind testing it either tbh J 1
AWicher Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 SIMS on iPhone, More of a reason work sould pay for my contract!!! 1
Theblacksheep Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 so, where can I ask for sims on android... 1
localzuk Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 If they just create a web based version optimised for portable devices, rather than just an iphone app, that would be better. Less to maintain, more devices would have access and it would potentially be more secure. 1
MattMitchell Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Plus it would be simple to deliver an iPhone webapp a la facebook
localzuk Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Great idea! Now, what shall we use.... Java? AJAX? Wait - Silverlight! That'll work on everything, won't it? Hehe, you appear to have come across Capita before.
john Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 Plus it would be simple to deliver an iPhone webapp a la facebook That would have good use takeup from all the parents on Facebook they could share there kids stats via there FB page
deanc Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 That would have good use takeup from all the parents on Facebook they could share there kids stats via there FB page actually one of the features that really impressed me about frog is that it does this, back on topic, why not make it a windows app so that you could just use a PDA or windows based smartphone, you know a bit like bromcom managed to do years ago!
localzuk Posted October 23, 2009 Posted October 23, 2009 back on topic, why not make it a windows app so that you could just use a PDA or windows based smartphone, you know a bit like bromcom managed to do years ago! Because then it would be restricted to a relatively small market compared to symbian, os x (for iphone/ipod), android, etc... Why target your app at a single platform, when it would be just as simple to create a multi-platform one?
p858snake Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 Because then it would be restricted to a relatively small market compared to symbian, os x (for iphone/ipod), android, etc... Why target your app at a single platform, when it would be just as simple to create a multi-platform one? And yet designing for iPhone/iPod Touch would be restricting it to just those devices from my understanding of programming for them not just "all macs". I'm just interested to hear about security and such for users that link into their AD based networks and such.
vikpaw Posted October 24, 2009 Posted October 24, 2009 I'd rather just the current PC software worked all the time and glitches were fixed 'tout de suite'!
SteveB Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 This was Demo's at the SIMS conference earlier in the year. Phil Neal accessed a register using the app on an ipod touch and tool a register and showed the basic functionality. It was a proof of concept tho i think. Although my personal feeling is that as touch devices are taking off accross all platforms, Capita could be looking at Symbian or possibly even Android rather than the small market share apple has. Mind you the Apple Slate is on the horizon . . .
GrumbleDook Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I thought that it was an iPhone friendly page from SLG that was used for that demo? That would be the easiest way.
srochford Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 That would have good use takeup from all the parents on Facebook they could share there kids stats via there FB page Like it - the register could update an absentee's facebook page "Little Johnny is ... playing truant" :-) 1
DrCheese Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 It's nice, but giving ipod touches to staff would be a nightmare They'd want to use them to listen to music, install a ton of fart apps and generally use them for anything but SIMS.... Apple don't offer anyway of totally locking them down do they?

Apple don't offer anyway of totally locking them down do they? you can enter a pin code in and you wont be allowed to use it unless you enter in the pin code LOL That would defeat the object of locking it down though - I think you can get an app or something to manage what apps go onto them but not sure how or w/e Wasn't sims on windows enough lol agree with making it a web app and then you can access it through any device that has a connection and is able to access that page(s)
MattMitchell Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Maybe iPhone support is more of a marketing ploy / USP: think how popular SIMS can sometimes be in this forum, and think how "cool" an iPhone app could seem. Maybe it's about that?
PhilNeal Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Well it's good to see so much interest but this isn't about marketing it is about trying to produce applications that teachers want to use. I've been to a few schools now and spoken to a lot of heads that are excited about the prospect of using mobile devices in schools. HTML is OK for an average application but specific apps for Android or Apple are special.
MattMitchell Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Fair enough Phil - it wasn't meant as cynically as it probably sounded! Mobile provision would be a serious improvement, especially for things like taking registers. I love my iPhone and the apps, but I can't help thinking that there must be cheaper mobile devices out there for deployment of this kind of thing though. I'm guessing it's not hard to have a flagship prettied-up version though, especially if it's a webapp type thing.

HTML is OK for an average application but specific apps for Android or Apple are special. XML + XSLT + AJAX can produce a rich application for mobile devices now. Android utilises the chrome engine, iphones utilise the webkit engine, Windows Mobile utilises IE6 Mobile which has support for AJAX, Symbian has various - Opera Mobile for example.

Has anyone had any experience of it??
Zoom7000 Posted November 15, 2009 Posted November 15, 2009 Why don't Capita sort out some of the annoyances in SIMS.net, like having to add users to groups 1 by 1 as opposed to adding multiple group membership to the user account like in Active Directory! And a proper silent deployment with easy and less annoying automated updates, instead of doing something that would be considered by most as vastly unnecessary! SIMS on an iPod? Why? Just why?
