witch Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I know this is a bit pathetic, and that some of you get lots and lots of gifts from teachers, staff and students, but.... Apart from a present from my immediate boss at Christmas, I never get anything from staff or SMT as well as no acknowledgement of my contribution to the school - either school. But...just now the head of Year 4 brought me a lovely hand made card and some chocs from all of Year 4. She was very complimentary about my work here (have been here since Christmas) and I feel quite tearful. Such a small thing, but it make all the difference to me. I shall go home happy.....
Kaz Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Thats great to be appreciated. We never get anything here xx
TwoZeroAlpha Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I got some choccies from the HOD, but not holding my breath for much else from the school. Finance dept kind of got me air-con installed yesterday so I'm happy with that
Little-Miss Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Oh my goodness thats lovely. I've just been winding the office staff up because they've all been given a small gift from a child. I said stuff the "Thank you teacher" cards....where are the "Thank you Technician" or "Thank you Network Manager"?....Pah!
sparkeh Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Thats nice I never get anything...although I did just get the money to spend on CC4 and managed wireless so I'm happy
OutToLunch Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I got given a "No, I will not fix your computer" t-shirt by a TA a few weeks ago and a big bar of dairy milk from another TA last week. Funny how the people with the least money are the most forthcoming with presents!
ahuxham Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I got given a "No, I will not fix your computer" t-shirt by a TA a few weeks ago and a big bar of dairy milk from another TA last week. Funny how the people with the least money are the most forthcoming with presents! They haven't fully adjusted to teacher mentality yet TA's are always wonderful, bubbly people, bit carefree and a good laugh, when they aren't TA's any more and amalgamate into the machine, they slowly slip off the scale year after year. I've been given a few things, mainly chocolates, wine and the such, don't expect it, but its always good, and saying that. I've never given anything back, apart from my Tesco Value Merry Christmas cards I printed and laminated, I did think it was funny.
elsiegee40 Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 That's lovely witch. I got a bottle of rather nice sparkling wine from our new SENCO this year for bailing her out on a regular basis when she first joined.
the_one_that_cant Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 One of my schools gave me a selection box of the Terry's Chocolate Orange range, me thinks it was left over from Christmas. My school today have given me a card with a fantastic personal message and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 2007 by Banrock Station. 3rd bottle since I started working here. I don't have the heart to tell them I don't like wine. But it will be drunk
dalsoth Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 We had a few pressies........ laptops to rebuild for them over the holiday
apoth0r Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 We've been offered to come eat their buffets, which has gone down well Not too fussed about pressies, could do without the guilt of not getting them anything! Maybe a glass of wine at 3pm will do the trick
leco Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Know the feeling Witch - for the first time ever I got a pressie from the ICT Subject leader!!!! She said she couldn't do her job without me - which was very, very nice. Made me feel good anyway as I have got her out of a few fixes. Her card said thank you for my "gentle guidance" - mm not so sure about that one
WelshTechie Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Been given two bottles of wine unexpectedly! Nice to be appreciated
ninjabeaver Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 2 boxes of Celebrations here (now mostly devoured), a bottle of Merlot and 4 cans of Abbot ale. And............ Sausage and Chips yesterday.
Guest richard_s Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 I remember one year way back when I worked in schools I got 3 bottles of Jack Daniels and 2 big jars of Carte Noir coffee and a £1,000 bonus for bringing in several big projects on time and under budget during the previous year.
OutToLunch Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Just been given a nice bottle of wine by my boss

Great_Scott Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 This morning I opened an envelope with a "Talented Teacher Award" certificate inside! I'm not even a teacher but I was nominated by the year 7s for keeping the computers running - I thought it was rather sweet:) I then got dragged back to reality with a phone call from one of the teachers wanting his mail forwarding to his personal mailbox. He didnt even have the decency to ask how I was or mention that I'm in this place all by myself for the next 6 weeks!
chrbb Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 As per usual left school at 3.30 yesterday with nothing, watched the TAs leaving as per usual weighed down with gifts from their teachers, after spending the entire year moaning and clock watching:( I spent the day clearing up moving computers making sure laptops had windows updates etc, whilst they all watched dvds and the recording of the year 6 show that I'd managed to transfer to dvd that morning. I did actually have a mention from the head in assembly when she thanked the staff and support staff and me (by name!) but to be honest am so fed up of not 'belonging' anywhere in the school don't feel as though I can continue, so will be spending most of the summer job searching.
witch Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 I did actually have a mention from the head in assembly when she thanked the staff and support staff and me (by name!) but to be honest am so fed up of not 'belonging' anywhere in the school don't feel as though I can continue, so will be spending most of the summer job searching. Sorry to hear that - my experience exactly except that in one school the head COMPLETELY ignored me (which hurt as I have been there since Christmas and have done very well and put in lots of new, appreciated innovations) and the other thanked everyone in assembly except me! I really appreciate my boss at the latter school as he makes me feel that we are a team I don't feel as if I belong although generally people are very nice to me. For me, I think it is because I am not around in the staff room at break or lunch. I'm not sure it would be much different in another school - unless you join a big team in a large secondary school. Chin up, you are FREE now, at least for a bit :D Have a lovely summer 1
