DAckroyd Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 I want to say Bye Bye Winsuite - I hate the thing - but I don't have time on my hands... I have problems that I'm having to fix know that if I was to replace the network it would fix but because I need to fix these problems as they are essential for the T&L of the kids then I have to sort those bits so no new domain ready and I have hundrads of software packages that will need to be turned into MSI's or App-V programs in weeks... I'm going to end up letting the whole system die after putting in writing that it is doing so and I need to completely replace the old server images with new one but I haven't been given the time. anyway I'm starting to rant and not make sense so I'll leave you all to work out what on earth I'm going on about and I'll see if any local NM's want to swap jobs?

Build and setup FOG server - register every PC on network with it Install 30 new PCs, image Move 15 PCs from one suite to another, image the lot Move 28 PCs from one suite to another Install Mac suite, add to network New network infrastructure in one department Upgrade students server to Server 2008 Clean all keyboards, mice, screens Build 7 new PCs from parts Add extra PCs to another IT suite, image Install projectors, sound systems etc in two rooms Replace AV equipment in school hall Setup disk quotas for all students It's just me here, and I'm fitting in some time off too! Going to be pretty hectic
garethEds Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 My list consists of Re-build of Domain controllers Rebuild of OS X Servers Rebuild of 25 imacs Rebuild of 36 new imacs Rebuild of 15 laptops rebuild of 10 mac minis configuration of 5 switches configuration of new IP Range Re-create user accounts re-create user home dirs re-create GPOs install and test wireless WDS system install StudyWiz move all machines to new school 10 minutes away cable up all patch panels and switches re-configure mail server re-configure imaps connection re-create new website for new school. Hodge - A bit cheeky to ask - but why do you have to do all of this? What has happened so bad that the domain controllers need rebuilding? Why are you rebuilding 25 imacs? I've seen this a lot here in this topic and wonder why all this is happening. We have no plans to rebuild our machines in the school - mainly because we are not having any problems with them. Our GPOs are okay. So I assume everyone here has problems that means they have to rebuild etc, Just curious, GJE

Err... not to rain on your parade, but that is not going to happen unless you manage to clone yourself, and then you and your clone figure out how to pause time...

Recover 6. Polish caravan and car 7. Load everything 8. Hitch up 9. Disappear for 5 weeks around Europe. Not coming for results day this year. Leaving work for the technician. Whether it gets done is anyones guess. But from the 23rd of July until the 29th August I'm gone. Oh well ;-) GJE
elsiegee40 Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 My aim is much more limited - given that I have 20 hours to work during the holiday (and not necessarily in this order): Upgrade Jave, shockwave, etc across the network (40 PCs) Clean the projectors Take images of all PCs that I don't have images for Take a hatchet to the Head's PC (if it fails to speed up after I've had yet another go at it!) Install new software on a couple of machines Disable leavers' accounts Create accounts for new pupils/staff Write document for Governors on need for upgrade of Server in next 12 months Clear out public storage areas; burning stuff to DVD where necessary. I'll be hard put to do this in the time available, but the HT has been reminded that I will be claiming OT for anything extra that gets added to my list!

broc Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 It's mostly housekeeping for us; we have no money left. I blew half my remaining annual budget on toner last week! I do have a few server builds to replace our print server, a DC, and an application server.... not to mention a new 48 port switch for admin.... It will be the quietest summer holiday I have had for years... looking forward to it!

Oh did I mention this will be in 4 weeks or so. I do have to add I am pretty sure all of this will not get done.

Last year due to some ummm yeah..... i became the IT Dept, not really having the man power to do some real maintenance on the servers and just doing the absolute vital stuff such as deploying new kit. 2008/09 it seems we have just made do with what we had. Aim for this summer is to set a solid foundation for the IT Dept team allowing the school to move in the right direction in the college's last full year before we move to a £1.6million network in November 2010! new music suite, 15 pc's + software and various other items setup and test FOG (seems to be a comon theme!) migrate SEN from macs to PCs migrate science from macs to PCs Tidy 4 other IT suites build and test new images for all it suites and laptops + staff laptops with new software packages some work on our vle new skin to come into line with our new corparate image. Finalise new website for luanch when staff return for trainging day. Look at training materials for IT Team + finalise IT Team Handbook of policies and procedures create trainign materials for staff on various opensource packages. Ensure all documentation is updated with new corperate look APPOINT ATLEAST 1 APPRENTICE!!! migrate CMIS to SQL 2008. look at our filtering situation again. Get Joe from CPLTD to buy me a few drinks that he owes me Take my current IT Tech out for Lunch as a big thanks for his hard work in the past year. He came in for 1 day in the last week of last summer to help me and got offered a job the next day by our new head. few 8 hour meetings with IT Consultants. take up to 16 days holiday booked 8 off already but most are on fridays which are half days anyway although i'll end up rolling over 5! Almost forgot get ready for new intake and support our data manager on download day!
john Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 I think were up to line 55 on my Gantt Chart for the holiday, which now includes dealing with Main Electric issues (think thats more just a point and heres the key to the plant room don't turn it off without talking to me as I'm the boss), Exam results downloads, analysis, fibre installation campus wide, re-image all PCs in the campus, create a new 6th form centre, wire the 6th form centre, same with a new media studies area, install my Sun SAN when it arrives late this month, pay bills, do more wiring, make some VMs I think of low end stuff like the Library Software, remove any software that I don't have licences for and cannot be proven (so far my licence request has brought forth about 3 licence agreements so looks like we won't have any software next year on the system then Makes the images waaaay smaller ) eeer turn to Server 2008 DCs if we get time, tidy offices, server room, store room etc, and many many other jobs.

We have no money, not just ICT but the whole school here is in a significant budget deficit. Our ICT budget was cut by 25% this year and that was on top of cuts last year. We've had no paid overtime authorised for the last 18 months and any work we do over the summer will be entirely voluntary. Spare some change Mr?

GJE The only reason I'm re-imaging every machine in the school this year is because I am getting rid of the WinSuite program and replacing it with a new AD structure. Re-imaging is the most effective way of making sure each PC is clean of WinSuite and is successfully part of the new AD. I certainly don't plan to re-image again, after this, until Windows 7. Certainly at my last place we only ever imaged new suites and suites that were causing particular problems. I too am a little shocked at how many people are re-imaging all their machines.
f21970 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Here's my list: - upgrade RAM in 120 PC's - reimage 140 PC's (a big power spike has made them a bit 'gimpy', so remedial measures!) - Implement Exchange server and migrate from linux mail to Exchange 2007 - Write staff training program & materials for Exchange - Implement SIMS Learning Gateway for access by staff and (allegedly) parents (though SMT not currently listening to advice re attendance registers & behaviour records, so reckon once the phone calls start this will be rolled back) - Roll out CS4 - Migrate the majority of the admin users to the curriculum network - Implement and configure Mahara - Implement a system in refurbed food tech so that demonstrations can be recorded and streamed to TV's located throughout the room - Implement (yet more) digital signage and link it up to MTV for lunchtime broadcasts - Tidy all wiring cabs - Tidy up the server room (it's a b****y mess!) All in all, a quieter summer than previous ones, which I'm happy about

I'm powering everything down and at 6.30 next morning I'll be on a plane to Portugal and I haven't booked a return flight yet. I'll stay until I've outlived my welcome and as I'll be keeping the grandkids amused over their holidays, that could be some time. I had planned to rebuild a load of computers but the windows are being replaced in that block, so that won't be possible.

GJE I generally find in the long term we have less problems when machines have fresh images applied to them. Being 100% sure of what state the machines are in on the 1st day of term is a good thing. compared to a year or so of updates slowly slowing machines down! you might not like this bit but if you dont understand why we do it you shouldn't be in charge of a network sorry......
localzuk Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Re-imaging ensures that everything is running perfectly when all the teachers get back. It gives an opportunity to update all software that's installed, clean up all the temporary junk etc... Usually, a re-image like that gives a speed increase. Lot's changes over holidays, that is when most of my work gets done. New software, new servers, new updates, new people etc...
