School Flooded

Hello all

 

Today we've all come back in to school today after a nice sunny half term break, to find the school flooded both infant and junior hall under water, the water had managed to flood my ICT-suite with about inch of water. my Curriculm server / DC server was found still on with RED warning lights, and the fans blasting. PSU was also under water.

 

I've upload some pics

Oopsey looks like the heating system sprung a leak or something there with all that water. Take advantage, nice big insurance claim for a shiny new server

there was a water pipe going to a water tank which the burst at the top, must of happened in the middle of the night. - I've got an e-mail from my UPS saying there was a volt over charger or something like at 2:49am it might have been then.

 

I have Cleaned out the server and and left it to dry out near the window in the sunlight. there are already signs of rust and that white stuff about the chips.

 

But I don't think it will be operational

That's horrible. The kids are, no doubt, delighted, but it's not going to be easy to sort that lot out quickly.

 

As for the server... Insurance... if you ever get the old server running, it'll be useful as a spare or for testing, but I wouldn't want to rely on it to support the network

Didn't I leave my rolex, my playstation 3 and my 60" sony tv in your room which is now water damaged and will need to be replaced on your insurance?

Which servers were affected? Have you logged a call with the service desk yet? I didn't see a call from you today, but then again it was so madly busy today! Just under 300 calls were received!

Oh dear! I think you've illustrated why it's a bad idea to have server rooms on the ground floor - or if you have no choise, why the servers should be raised up off the floor. Best of luck sorting that lot out, it'll be weeks before they'll open the school again I should think, all the health and safety checks that have to be done after flooding has taken place take a while!

was your psu an inch off the ground then ?

 

or was that water coming from above dropping onto your server ?

I needed a new server anyhow, just means I need to put down for 2 not sure where to store them now.

 

The previous ICT technician had the server installed in the Cupboard due to a lack of space. There is nowhere else possible to store it but the ICT room. I did ages ago ask if I could have a spare room In the Schools tower, it’s a small room, perfect to have a server in there as it is the highest floor but it would need a lot of work to have the servers in there such as network cabling, air conditioning and some flooring. The room is currently used for storage, but was turned down.

 

Don’t worry about the Backup tapes they are for an old server which was taken offline over a year ago. they need to be destroyed anyhow.

 

Those cables where attached to the server I just ripped them out when I saw the server Swimming.

 

Any server recommendations, I’m thinking HP Proliant ML370

Grab a couple of DL380 rack mount servers instead along with a rack, at least that way they are elevated away from the water and locked away if you get the right type of rack. It is also much easier to work on them when they are rack mounted

I've just ordered 50Mb BoardBand from Virginmedia which is going to be installed this Saturday

 

theres no managing traffic on the 50Mb from them so I won't be caped to a lower speed

Looks like a good task for a Kell Systems Server Cabinet. I think their website is: Kell Systems.

 

They look preety good, are virtually silent when the doors are shut, have good ventilation/fans and cable mangement. I would imagine that something like this under a bench of the ICT suite would be suitable for you. I suppose it still doesn't solve the flooding risk should the cabinet be placed on the ground floor though...

 

I don't know your budget but I would think that some of the suppliers on here could advise you on somthing similar to this.

I gotta agree, the DL380's give you plenty of power and they aren't all that noisy. We currently have 3 DL380's, all rackmounted.

I don't think he'd put them in the ICT suites if he had a server cab with two rackmounted servers. I know in our school I wouldn't dare, even in a locked cab they'd be destroyed straight away.
