Arcath Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 The trouble with having a Miranda server is that you'll always be paranoid that some of its data will kill all the other data and then roam around the network attacking innocent packets as they travel between servers. my PC used to be called Miranda, (being the only one running windows at the time ). But when i re built it i decided to re name it to something more suited to its size.
CSNM-Carl Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 Mixture of the phonetic alphabet and serverX (replace X with a number!).
Batman Posted May 31, 2010 Posted May 31, 2010 my PC used to be called Miranda, (being the only one running windows at the time ). But when i re built it i decided to re name it to something more suited to its size. hehehe... you definitely don't want reavers in your pc!
davidchaps Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 I've had great fun with server names over the years. Somewhere on t'interweb there is a paper about naming, three things I remember and always make sure of: 1. Particulalry if using English placenames, make sure there isn't a rude word in the middle of the name, even Sussex can cause problems to some filtering software ! 2. Make the desktop wallpaper relate to the machine name, helps you remember what machine you are on. 3. Make sure the first part and last part of the name is different to existing servers in your organisation. We had a Webserver called Speyside and a DB server called Speybridge and were always mixing them up ! We had some problems with servers Clacton and Frinton - these went away when we renamed Frinton to Margate ! One other tip is buy a label machine so if you have to ask a non-tech to reboot you can have confidence they choose the right machine !
mavhc Posted June 28, 2010 Posted June 28, 2010 hehehe... you definitely don't want reavers in your pc! Kinda suits a computer really, usually calm, but 1% of the time, goes stark raving mad
smitho1990 Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 All of our servers are named after starwars characters Vader, c3po, bobafett, r2d2, yoda, cantina. Best one is Jabba, for our catering system
Arcath Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Kinda suits a computer really, usually calm, but 1% of the time, goes stark raving mad lol, and windows trys to cover it up but that one telepathic girl ruins everything Added another server to my home network (although thats not its permernant residence) Santo a CoD4/Web Server for LAN Parties.
Ambient Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 My office computer is called "Epicfail", and my technicnan's computer is called "ThunderLOL" Winz!
6Foot2 Posted July 6, 2010 Posted July 6, 2010 We have a common school stem at the front of our server names followed by two, three or four characters [included to try and summarise the job of the server] then followed by 01, 02,... etc. If our school name was Bash Street School our first Domain controller [first one created] would be called: BasDC01 The second domain controller would be: BasDC02 Our first File Server would be: BasFS01 etc. I know that it lacks originality but it works for me.
Haptic Posted July 14, 2010 Posted July 14, 2010 Ours was really expensive, keeps falling down, and it'll make life hard when we replace her - I hereby christen her Heather Joe
GondorUr Posted October 8, 2012 Posted October 8, 2012 I thought I would chime in on this thread. Our old server admin was a big fan of astronomy and named everything such. Server names after planetary bodies, domains were moonlight and sunshine and everything of the sorts. Time went by and he has long retired and left us, and over the years our server names have followed a more traditional naming convention Mailstore, Exchange, StuDom, Fac/StaffDom etc. The last of our "old servers" used to be the backup server for our payroll system, now converted into a Tech file storage share. Our current admin decided to keep the name as a nice tip of the hat to his predecessor (we just think he likes the name) Anyways it always gets a great laugh when somebody asks where a certain file is, "Its on Uranus!"
chrisalltraine Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Why not - I name my servers to reflect the Job role starting with the first 3 letters of the school followed by a few letters of the job role - School name: Harrow / Server Role: Exchange (Server Name: Har-Exch) Personal preference on whoever is managing the network really, I like to keep it short.
glennda Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Now I work in support and installation for a third party consultancy company I name client servers sensibly - internal we have some good names! But I tend to either do Client Name appreviated to 3 letters - Role - Number or for the larger ones we do Site-Role-number.
MatthewL Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 Normally have site role and number or srv/ser role number works ok. Some places we gave them funny names and then created an A record with site role number which works ok too. Best one I had recently at a site was Server.Domain.local exactly as that, their domain was domain. Have to laugh at some of them at times.
synaesthesia Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 I recall a site (non education) that I was hired to clear up. The domain was called contoso.com. 1
unixman_again Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 My home PC is called localhost as is my netbook. Since I don't run them at the same time, it isn't a problem.
Asgard Posted October 2, 2013 Posted October 2, 2013 All servers are named using a Stargate theme......
john Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 I recall a site (non education) that I was hired to clear up. The domain was called contoso.com. Someone set it up using the MS How to guides then

Oaktech Posted October 3, 2013 Posted October 3, 2013 Ages ago our mail servers were named after the spice girls... Then there was the IT director whose laptop was called Elvis and when he unplugged it sent an MSMessenger message to everyone in the IT dept that said "Elvis has left the building."
Asgard Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 (edited) I hate you, I hate you, I hate you - that is all Ha ha ?, Why?!? They were originally following the Greek Mythology, but then it just expanded ) Edited October 5, 2013 by Asgard
