Our naming structure for severs has been after LOTR since 2000.

We have everything here from Sauron through to Aragorn

:suspicious:

Sure this is a common one but currently we have Earth, Sun, Moon, Mars, Saturn, Titan and Mimas.

I wont go into my thought process's but they are all named for a reason relating to the place, i was bored that day:o

It's all a little confusing for me at the moment using:

admin-two

admin-four

admin-five

admin-six

admin-eight

it's like security by obfuscation, very effective ;) !

at another place we just went for purpose e.g. W = webserver, D = Database, F = file etc. so FSvr1, DSvr2 . . .

Currently changing the previously dull CpsFileSrv1 etc. to Harry Potter theme as they are replaced.

Argus the ISA server, Flitwick the terminal server, Hermione the backup server. Severus the SIMS server coming this summer.:D

Saving Albus and Harry for when I replace the DCs :D

Wireless APs are named after Hogwarts ghosts: Myrtle, BloodyBarron, Nick etc.

Bart is troublesome print server - skinner new exams server etc

Home: Harry Potter characters for inward-facing addresses (lupin, hermione, sirius, hedwig, ginny), Winnie-the-Pooh for outward (poohbear, piglet, robin, eeyore, heffalump); parents: Noggin the Nog characters (nooka, noggin, and knut).

Except hedwig also faces outwards, because everybody should have a mail server called hedwig :D

Work are really boring, functional names. My old school I named everything from Shakespeare's Tempest.

Did the planets for fileservers, then moved to a NetApp - Crusader

Added some more NetApps - Lionheart & Saladin

VMWare ESX servers are Galactica, Pegasus & Atlantia

Primary DC - Overlord (had a fileserver called Minion, but some people were offended by that...??)

We have a few Incarnations of Imortality (Thanatos etc)

Most recently, for some redundancy and DR, I added some DC's:

Atrocity

Apocalypse

Armageddon

Annihilator

Devastator

Vengeance

That about covers.. ;)

We get bored you see... ?

3 of ours are simply named by what they do e.g. printserver

The PDC has an asset tag for its name which you would think is clear, straightforward and sensible, which it is, except for the fact its the asset tag of the server which it sits next to  which caused some confusion when I first started here. Put a CD in one and watch it load on the screen of another. Hmmmmmm...Interesting....Time for a cup of tea!

The reason for it was that when the new PDC was installed they kept the same name, and the server that was originally the PDC which is the one with the asset tag on (which is the name of the new server) is now an app server......

...... or at least I think it is! Maybe? Who knows!!

We have really boring names :(

I did use a little bit of imagination with the latest one though, new server for doing ghostcasting i have appropriately named "casper" :D

the rest of ours are called by what they do, PDC, Ablock-dc, admsvr01, printsrv1 etc

In an older life, I started naming all our servers after characters from Lord of the Rings  . I know, I know - majorly sad. No more though. I still have difficulty deciding how to name servers on small sites, and what do do when they are replaced.

In a single server domain, is it really worth trying to reflect the site name and all the roles of the server in the name (sitename-dc-dns-wsus-sims-1 ??).Besides, you don't want to rename the server just because a role is added or removed.

What then do you do when replacing the server. When all our sites migrated from NT to 2000 it was not a problem. The NT PDC could be renamed and the new 2K server installed with the original name. Not so easy under 2000 if you want to retain the domain info though unless you mess about with multiple servers. 2K3 gives us the ability to simply rename the server again (provided you do a metadata cleanup to get rid of the old entry).

I'm currently thinking along the lines of (server-role)-(os)-(numerator), so a server would be called ADMIN1-2K-1. When upgraded to 2K3 it would become ADMIN1-2K3-1. When this is replaced by new hardware it would become ADMIN1-2K3-2. If a seperate server was added for Exchange or SIMS it would become ADMIN2-2K3-1 (ie 2nd Admin server, 2K3, 1st one).

You've got to call them something for FFS!

What do others do. I'm mostly interested in small sites using 1 or 2 servers I suppose. Although the ren

Name them after the 100 Sexiest Women in the world as voted for by the readers of FHM.
