I recognise a lot of those names from our Maya rendering workstations... :D

Almost all of our servers are named with non-English proper nouns that are consistently difficult to spell. The NM has a list of them. One day I am going to kill him and rename them all to something I can type without having to reduce my typing speed to 1/3 of normal.

We've named them like this:

Primary (file (used to be DC before we expanded)), Secondary (apps and print), Tertiary (Admin), Quaternary (DC)

Just going to keep going like that! Before we got primary and secondary we had server and nt1.

I'm another one for the solar system:-

Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars & Jupiter

Except we skipped Earth. When we got to that one it just sounded weird so never used it.

My home server (and main box) is Holly.

I've 3 other systems/laptops, Hilly, Queeg and Gordon ;)

A cookie for whoever spots the theme.

That would be Red Dwarf. I claim my cookie.

One cookie is yours. And it's even a Maryland Double Chocolate Chip one, no Aldi bargain basement types here!

How excellent. I was going to ask if you were delivering or posting, but as it's such a luxury cookie I'd like it by special please.

Coming in late to this thread but my first server was called Pauline. Shortly followed by Matthew, then came Tubs, Iris and of inevitably Dave ("You're my wife now.").

we have a mix of sources for names.

windows servers tend to be LOTR (sauron for our cctv, merry + pippin for eportal and cmis database servers)

mac servers have mcx+what every it does

linux servers i setup are wow bosses.

some old linux servers that an old techie name are some geeky swear words from some geeky tv show. (loomas, mivonks)

My last server install was for a new Exchange server. Being that the initials of the school I work for are BS I thought why not combine the two!

It wasn't until a week or so after when I was troubleshooting an Outlook issue on the Headteachers PC he turned from the screen with a confused frown and said "BSEX-01", who called the server that?!" that I realised I might have chosen a more suitable name! :getmecoat:

Interesting topic, but I think I will refrain in giving out such information as I am paranoid about IT security. Yes they may be just names of servers or equipment on a network which may or may not be in a DNS table of sorts but a hacker or someone with a grudge has to start somewhere.

I had a convention which was 3 letters of job title, so when it came to the Assistant Heads PC, well she became the ASSHEAD-01 and I thought I can't call it that, so it got changed to ASSTHEAD-01 just for her (as she was a supportive asst. head :)) and she said how come everyone else is 3 letters and i said well it was rude to call your PC an asshead and she was oh its fine i've been called far worse in my career as a teacher than an asshead so I had to laugh :)

I wanted call ours after godfather and mafia characters, sad I know and the SAN i wanted to call Chicago. Mess about in chicago and you will sleep with the fishes lol sad .

In the end it was KEA to represent the school and a letter to note function, so KEAP is primary, KEAB is backup, KEAS is sims and KEAM is multipurpose (WSUS etc), with KEABSTOR for the backup server software etc.
