OK, radio would be the choice? but what other options are there.

 

Is it possible to fit fibre under a public road?

 

What about some kind of telephone link?

WiFi bridge is cheap and simple but not 100% reliable.

 

Fibre link requires you go talk to the council and get permission to dig up the road. You also need to notify the police etc. You'll need some workmen to dig the road up and re-lay the road surface correctly aftwards. Basically, it's fiddly, longwinded and expensive.

 

You could also use a site to site VPN connection. You'd need an unfiltered direct connection to the internet in each building and a server running VPN.

We user laserBit to cover from our main building to our port-a-classes.

 

The distance is 150m and we run 15 pc's over the laser link at a continual 100Mbs without any degradation from weather or low flying birds.

 

The Pinto will gaurantee 100Mb up to 250m but if you require something a little more powerfull you can go up to 1Gb over 1Km (WOW!)

 

The only requirement is you must have clear line of site at both ends and it must be mounted where people can not look directly into the path of the laser.

We had a link like this and the local yobs took a shine to it and decided to use it as target practise for their powerful air rifles and hey presto we found out to our expense what good shots they were. at upwards of £3000 a shot hehe forgive the pun that is rather expensive. got fibre link instead cost slightly more but is now in place and working a treat.

 

ICTNUT it's still a very good solution though so sorry not dissing it OK ;)

Councils can be quite accomodating, we have ours under public highways and TBH they ain't always that fussey, but depends if your wanting to put yours under the M60 or the C5333, ours were quite rural local roads not main trunk roads or anything like that so maybe thats why we were so lucky and found it fairly easy going.

We have some laser links - they're coming to end of life now but they were pretty good. Manufacturer is Pavdata (http://www.pavdata.com/)

 

Across a road you shouldn't have any problems but over a longer distance (longest for us is about 2.5km) fog can be a serious issue and snow has caused a problem.

 

How high are your buildings? If they're way above traffic height then a steel catenary with fibre tied to it would be cheap and easy and give you immense bandwidth.

you can ask BT if they will run a Fiber or Ethernet cable from the telephone poll for you. They did it for a friends of mine in the Isle Of Wight

^ We run fibre via a steel cable from our building, across the road to a telephone pole and then to the other building. BT were fine with this.

 

Admittedly, our site is pretty rural and the only requirement was to ensure high-sided lorries could safely get through.

I would go for a wireless bridge.

 

We had a fibre link between our upper and lower school and it was cut by some contractors that were doing the road and although there were other building work being done they would not admit liability for it. Of course if the cable is broken you have no connectivity and you have to locate the cut and this can be both expensive and lengthy. To have the whole thing replaced would cost a fortune.

 

We had a wireless bridge installed for around £2000 in April this year and it is excellent. Providing you have line of sight to the other part of the school you will have no problems. As for reliablity I would say it is 100%. We have had no issues to date.

I think consulting BT would be an option especially if you would like fibre as they a wicked portable-ish machine that can join fibre.

 

Or maybe even Virgin Media if it is a cable enable area as they might have a solution aswell.

We had 2 sites a few years ago and were lucky in that there was a bridge across for the kids and we ran a fibre line across it.

 

Then we had "Enviroment Day" which involved getting the kids to dig a trench across the playing field and laid the fibre in that. None of them semed to quesition why they had to do it either... It was just like a chain gang :D

So it's 2023, anyone done this recently? Because it is 2023, 90% of activities would be just fine with no layer 2 or 3 connectivity to the main building, however we need certain elements to be fully integrated with our existing infrastructure, including some legacy tech that expects to be on the same layer 2 network. We also have some potential workflows that would benefit from 10G back to the servers.

 

Anyone got any advice? Who did you go to to solve it? How much did it cost? How was the funding secured?

Our ISP offered a WAN connection between 2 sites across town (~3 miles). AFAIK the cost wasn't substantial. Was secured as DfE funding when the new site was built. Internet speeds to site 2 are 1Gb, between site WAN traffic (backups) speeds are ~10Gb.
