Free youtube server ?

Does anyone know of a open source system that will play videos, something like youtube but running on our own server with our own video content.

Why would you want to do this? You can register with youtube.com for free, then host as many videos as you want at their expense!

What if YouTube is blocked by the ISP in our case? There's a reason to do it.

We use Vhare (vShare Video Sharing Script - YouTube Clone Script, script to start video sharing community) it isn't free but might as well be for $10 :-)

 

If you'd like more info get in contact as I've shown a few other Colleges and they are very interested in it and how I've tweaked it for College use.

We use moodle for video content, I modified the flv play to make it work fullscreen - the hack will be mainstream in the 1.95 release.

 

it doesn't auto convert files to flv yet though....

Youtube is banned by our county filtering. Easier to have it in-house only, so no external issues! Good thinking though!

I have written a system that allows our staff to have videos streamed for both students and staff, it is only running on a dual core 2gig 2gig of ram, 640GB hdd space.

It runs debian with lighttpd web server so that it allows for progressive streaming of video files. It can happily allow you to move forward and back in a 1.2GB file.

I have been asking staff to contact educational content on youtube and ask them to post it on teacher tube as thats not blocked in Lancashire.

Joomla + hwdvideoshare, clipbucket, ostube, vidiscript are all good too, Dolphin by Boonex works well but there are a lot of stories about nasty users on the forums at Boonex and you allegedly don't get much help when asking about issues you may have. I've been looking into this myself as a way of holding all of our old VHS videos in a central repository. OSTube has a nice WebTV feature but mass uploading isn't supported, Dolphin via the flash uploader can mass upload but on Linux I couldn't get it to work and on windows it uploaded but wouldn't convert, Vidiscript I think can do mass uploading but don't quote me on that. The joomla + hwdvideoshare is very good and the mass uploading works great but it doesn't have an option for sound or photos but hwdphotoshare will sort out part of that and there are loads of MP3 (mass uploading supported) modules/plugins/components for Joomla too. The one I use you just create an article and add a tag with the directory you want to use and it adds all the files to that page with individual players (could get messy if you aren't careful lol) they've got to be MP3 at the moment the plugin is called Mp3Browser.

With Google Apps Education, selected staff can upload video to your google education domain, using google video.
