  1. So, basically it turns out that your just really bored... What got you into IT in the first place ? Games, Hardware, Networking ? There are so many areas of IT that I can usually always find a passion somewhere. I have recently got bored with desktops, so ended up doing some Android Development. Currently getting as much of my home WiFi, Led'd and sensored as possible, Led lights, Nest Fire Alarm and Thermometer, Withings scales. Took up Running Swimming and Cycling, the tech around that is amazing. So sounds like you need a hobby.
  2. Hi all, I've been asked to create a system where we can give access to all students in KS3 access to SQL, ftp, wordpress. Now initally that screams Linux to me, but creating a new set of accounts and for MySQL and creating a wordpress install... is not exactly filling me with Joy. One suggestion is just get them to all sign up for a http://www.x10hosting.com/ account. Any other ideas ? Budgester
  3. Have a look at Groupcall Emerge - the powerful yet intuitive iPhone / iPod 'App' which enables schools to have an up-to-the-minute copy of their MIS data instantly and securely available in the palm of their hand

    GPO question

At what level are your software restrictions applied ? Domain Level, User/Group Level OU/Computer level ? Should the software restrictions only apply when a workstation is logged onto as a local user ?
  5. Printers listed in AD ? Are other GPO's applying ? what happens if you run gpupdate on the client ?
  6. My US robotics 56K modem- sooper fast internet. C64 1541 5 1/4 Inch floppy - oh god yes, after the pain of tape.... Or currently sat on my desk is my IBM Model M keyboard from 1985 - been with me for 10 years now. My first dual screen monitor setup with 19" Iiyama CRT monitors. Or the lastest thing that people think is cool, ODBII bluetooth connector with Torque on my android - Go check it out if you drive and are a geek.
  7. 30 people opening and reading is bad enough, nut editing as well, it's not gonna end well. Why do people teachers even think this might be a good idea, let alone IT Teachers...
  8. Amiga 500, cost £350, saved up for at £10 a week from my saturday job, plus birthday and christmas money. Then added a extra 512kb <- yes thats right kb. of ram for the socket underneath. Plus an additional 3 1/2 floppy drive.
  9. cos why weren't all the resources uploaded on the VLE, or at least stored on Dropbox, Google Drive or something And the student data entered in the MIS. Oh how we laughed...
  10. And don't they like to remind us, but totally getting to the point where I turn round and say enough is enough. Not of course that I have 20 years of working with databases and creating reports, coding and problem solving, just cos your a teacher and got a bit of a promotion, your degree in how to teach a mildly technical subject now means you know more about business processes, statistics and basic maths than I do. And when you ask for an average of some values and I ask... Mean, Mode or Median and you give me a blank look, again .... Gah... I'm sure my contract says I'm allowed to use a cluebat !!
  11. So gotta let of steam here, why when I spend loads of time created Marksheets, Reports and methods for analysis do staff insist that they want the data exported in excel, so they can do some analysis ? And it's not even like they are competent in excel either. Then of course class list change, students start and leave the school, so the excel analysis is pretty much out of date as soon it leaves SIMS. But of course I'm the data manager so I should be able to fix and merge and understand all the weird stuff they have done, and know what 20 level subnested folder the spreadsheet called Y11-12-13-Ethnic-English.xls is stored in, so I can cross reference it with the other 20 spreadsheets spread all over the place, that have no common format, and produce a report for SLT in under 5 minutes. When if they actually told me what they want I could implement a reproducible solution in SIMS in a couple of hours, that will keep working and allow all the information to be reported on. But noooooo, they want a spreadsheet. Gaahhhh, Just Gaahhhhh.
  12. I guess the main question is what sort of programming do they do ? Just set up a Linux box and get them to ssh into then they can use vim/emacs on the command line, and write make files. Or are we talking about some sort to GUI based programming here ?
  13. Does anyone have any stats for how this software is used ? Do Teachers GET it ? or is it just something else that they ignore and don't use ?
  14. Um, lets see..... Last week of term, what shall we teach the children, oh yes, the value of slacking off and how to be a good media consumer. I reckon at least 50% of all classes are currently watching youtube videos of no educational value here.
  15. Urgh nope, this is what the behaviour module is for...
  16. But the DHCP server would have a list of host names, anything stand out ?
  17. Can you track which port it's connected to on your switches ? Is your DHCP server dishing out an address ?
  18. Get a job, get your CCNA which will teach you all about networking, install linux, contribute to an open source project. I've just recently finished a OU degree in computing after having worked in IT for 15 years before starting it. It nearly killed my interest in IT, and taught me pretty much zero, other than how to write an essay which I hated doing at school any way. Life to short to do something you don't enjoy.
  19. You know your a sad old geek when....... You remember the AT command set, and a modem without a a handset coupler is super modern.
  20. 5 1/4 in floppies having an amazing speed of data access on the C64. Then later on buying 100 * 3 1/2" floppies and a 1/2 meg upgrade from my Amiga 500 from a computer fair in some obscure part of london.
  21. Are you trying to display the screen ? Maybe a VNC Server or something similar https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.onaips.vnc&hl=en
  22. Turns out, as with everything else that every goes wrong and is inscrutable, and issue with our DNS, and replication stopped between our 2 DC's. DCdiag is your friend.

Maybe it's coming frommthe user profiles, if so how to clear the settings in the user profiles ?
  24. Hi all, So I am pulling my hair out here, had LGFL 2.0 in for a week. On LGFL 1.0 we had to use a proxy server, which we deployed the setting via group policy. Now it would seem that you can unset the the proxy settings via group policy, and also that Windows just keeps picking it backup from somewhere in the registry. I have cleared all the setting in the GPO and reset it, I have added a *.bat to the logon. With the following in it. reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v ProxyEnable /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f And still the proxy settings come back. Any ideas please ?
  25. And lets not get me started on so called SSO. Single sign on to what ? Yes that right it sign on to there resources on the LGFL. Does it allow sign on to fronter ? No Does it allow sign on to my network ? No Does it allow sign on to SIMS ? No Does it allow sign on to my RDP sessions ? No Or any of my other online resources... No. Why not just call it, ASO. (Another Sign on).
