This is the most snow for at least 20 years though.

Certainly more than 6 inches where we are in Essex. Must take a piccie including measuring tape.

Up here its somewhat less. In fact it was little enough that I made it into work this morning.

 

Although looking at it now I may end up staying at work for a few days...

I attempted the trains and there canceled, roads are rubbish, Brothers sent home, sister sent home. Working from home today, Im not a fan of snow, so won't be going out.

We rarely ever get snow down in Dorset - first in quite a few years I think. Was a nice change. For the first time in a while whilst coming out of my drive, I slightly skidded good times

 

So many schools closed in the area, including my old school which I live at the back off? Yet now everything is fine? Its lol, crazy! Why? It was fine to get to.

 

Look what happened to Canada/U.S. recently, it was crazy over there. People live in -10 odd every day for many months. Yet here its a big big thing!?

 

O well my school is open so, working as usual. Now its a sunny nice day!

Our school was open as normal today - we had snow but not enough to cause any problems. All staff went sent home at 3:30 after the students had got on the buses.

 

We are in for worse forecast tomorrow, and I have the sneaky feeling we won't be in at all. I better draft the TXT message that I will be sending to staff / parents in the morning )

Just got in. Journey is was a little hairy! I passed through fog banks where I could not see past the bonnet and one guy came out of nowhere and sped past [To my mind he was driving blind]

 

Thermometer in the car went below 10.5 C at one point [only a guide I know but it does show how could it was in that freezing fog]

Never really tested the truth of the temperature sensor. I just use it as a rough guide to give me an idea of how hot/cold it is outside.

 

I suppose I should point out that when I said:

I was saying that it went below -10.5 C at one point. Some pedantic individual might take the opportunity later to say that there is no problem driving around when it is a positively mild [+]10.4 C.

I have just looked at the site I mentioned in my first post in this thread.

 

The site says that there is a moderate risk of drifting and heavy snow on Thursday and a low risk of an exceptionally severe event [again on Thursday] giving accumulations of 10 - 20 cm. There is "considerable uncertainty" as to which areas will and will not be affected: I am only looking at the South East maps. The forecast for Friday is couched in similar terms.

 

More snow anyone?

Agreed. I am puzzled by this also. I suppose that this happens so rarely that it does not make economic sense to 'get geared up' for a little bit of snow by investing in snowploughs and putting snow chains on tyres for public transport vehicles as the need arises etc.

 

...(and are too lazy to get up earlier or God forbid WALK)...

 

Again I agree. For my part I probably get up and get into school far too early. My wife certainly thinks so. I am often in before anyone else.

 

I have walked to work in similar conditions although I was not working at a school then, Public transport would not run to my destination as it involved going through a couple of villages where the roads were not gritted. So I had no choice other than to walk [i was much younger then...]

I was watching Country File earlier and they were warning of a "Winter Storm" hitting the south coast and moving up the channel. It did not sound good for Monday night/Tuesday morning.

That's exactly it. The press and the public that have been bleating on about other countries managing to survive more than 10cm of snow with no disruption have completely ignored the fact that other countries spend a ton more on anti snow equipment.

 

Of course being the bunch of hypocrites they are, if they discovered during a warmer period that our government was increasing the anti-snow budget they would go absolutely insane and call it a waste of money, which of course it would be.

 

It's a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't. We just need to accept that this is so rare here it makes zero sense for us to spend billions on tackling it and if it happens then we just have to put up with a few days hassle.

Something that doesn't seem to have been mentioned with all this snow is what happens when it melts... Gloucestershire has had a massive amount of snow, and more is expected. Anyone thinking that flooding will be the next big news?

And how far from Cheltenham are you? Would like to get an idea of where the snow is now and how it is progressing. All very well looking at the forecasts but the data presented there is not live.

 

BTW: No snow here at the moment. Clear sky and chilly. Location: Hertfordshire.

We're 30 miles north of Cheltenham. It's eased off a bit now but the sky still looks pretty heavy.

 

Son has just come through the door. Walking that is!
