We have recently recieved a number of Asus Eee Books from the LEA. I am wondering if anyone out there has these in their schools and what they think of them? Are they integrated into your Windows networks? Are you allowing kids to take them off site and if so have you got policies in place for this?

comments on this would be really appreciated.

We have 4 of the EEEPC 900 models that we have just purchased.

They are running WinXP Pro and we have purchased them specifically to use with Sims .Net and registration through SIMS. As they run WinXP they happy sit in the domain as a normal pc would.

Only staff will be able to access them and hopefully they wont get stolen - although with how small they are they are an easier target.

No further details as we haven't used them for very long.

We dont have any yet, but we will be using them for electronic registration.. so win xp and sims.net is what we will be using them for so staff only maybe in the future we will get some of the kids.

we also have webparts so we might be ditchin sims and jst doing it through the web browser so no need to have sims :)

Cheers for the feedback on this. It is just that we have been given 38 and I am currently deciding how best to utilise them. I was reluctant to try and integrate their linux os onto our 2003 domain. I think I will probably go the XP pro route with them.

Good idea to use them for SIMS reg though!!

We stripped XP down on one of them and it ran fine on the default 512MB of memory available.

Mind you, once we put antivirus on them etc (if you run the windows version, you really must do this) they became bogged down and notably less useful.

We now have approx 150-200 devices out in Primary / secondary Schools accross the city. Just a quick rundown of our findings

1> Stick with the Linux Installs

2> Provide a "dirty" wireless solution to allow them to connect without going anywhere near your network.. all work done on the device to be uploaded to your VLE/ Learning space

3> Linux install is clean, easy to use and provides students with the tools they need to use in lessons as an alternative to the traditional notebook.

4> If you do mess the the distro eeebackup is a great tool for "imaging" onto an SD Card (PM Me foir more details on howto use) - but is not without its problems and could on occaision be more hassel than pressing F9 at startup and restoring to its original settings (ok u do have to re-enter wireless details but hey we have Y2 children doing it so its not that hard)

5> Provide each device with a 4GB SD card and you got plenty of storage

Example Uses:

Simple notebook / spreadsheet / presentation with Open Office

USe built in video to record drama / Science / etc

Use built in Audio Recorder for MFL / AFL / digital notetaking

Games keep em happy over break / lunchtime

WEb is great for "just getting information quickly"

They will last all day if you just open, do what you need to to then close the lid.

Don't get too geeky with messing about with the Linux/ connecting to network etc they are meant for open, use, go meantality

I could go on and on but that will do for starters.. I will do a full publish of the article I am writing to the forum when done at around christmas time

We use them for PE Attendance here also.

And will probably buy some more for Assembly registration using the SIMS webparts to access the registers.

We have 32 of the 2 gig versions, we have kept Linux on them just heavily modded the front end and created a log on script to map there home dirs and the public drive. Seem to be working well and are liked by the teachers and students.

We have 7 in our PE dept for registration. They love them and find them easy to get on with. I installed XP and SIMS on them and they seem to work well. We went for the Atom processor ones with 1Gb of RAM. Only thing I didn't like was they are advertised as 12Gb drive - in actual fact they have 1 4Gb card and 1 8G drive.

£200 and able to have xp pro installed? Anyone installed XP pro or know of idiots guide?

I put XP Pro on mine (701 Surf series with 512MB RAM and 4GB SD card) using an external CD/DVD drive to do it - it was fairly idiot-proof I guess! :p

Runs perfectly fine.

I have heard of various people having problems with the aspire 1, no fixes for the eepc because it works?

I'm kind of thinking that a super small xp laptop would be quite fun. The linux one was ok but the 800 x 600 didn't make me love it.

We have one xp one in PE who love it. Had a tablet PC down there that they had no end of problems with. EEE just seems to work

Two linux ones. One is used for SMT note taking during meetings and one is our emergency one for network testing, diagnosis and playing around with. Just about Instant on is great!

What is the battery life like for class use? Or do you have them all plugged in???

Well I've had my one as XP Pro for about 4 months now, and not had a single problem at all.

Connects to school, home and pub ( :D ) wirelessly with no fuss, runs all software I need (tested with IE6, 7, 8 Beta, Firefox, MS Office 2003 suite, Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Sophos (did slow down but still usable) ). Used it for SD card transfer from cameras, local and network printing, MSN Messenger. The built-in camera works as a webcam and digital camera/video recorder, and MovieMaker is no more buggy than on any other hardware platform.

Battery life for "regular" use (i.e. using a VLP, Internet browsing, typing in Word) clocks in at around 1.5 hours (maybe 2 at a push, if you turned the backlight down a lot and turned off all but the most essential things (no sound, no wireless connection, no network connection etc.) ) It's not brilliant, but it's certainly not bad.

Oh, and charging time is 1 minute charge = 1 minutes use, so around 90 minutes for a full charge.

All in all, it's exactly like a regular laptop.

Only smaller.

Hi there

Asus EE PC 1000H best model by far I've got 120 and so far manage to image just over half with windows XP pro. No problems yet but will let you know. I wouldnt bother with the older models, go for the 1000H!

+ 80GB 2.5" sata harddrive

+ battery life 4 to 7 hours! (depending on what your doing and screen brightness, but you can easily get over 4 hours)

+ 10" inch screen

I have an eeePC 900 linux version with 16 GB flashdrive and Xandros linux installed, including OpenOffice 2.0

I am looking for development and educational software for the Linux version, but haven't had much luck so far...Xandrox.com has almost no software available, and eeePCfiles.com has nothing really fascinating...

Since Xandrox is derived from Debian, I have tried to find Debian and Ubuntu software which will run on the eeePC without trouble..but the forums are all filled up with horror stories about how Debian and Ubuntu SW doesn't work on the eeePC!!!

So, if any of you out there know of a reliable source of freeware/shareware or developer tools for the Xandrox eeePC, drop me a line!

We have gotten ourselves 400 of these little machines, was just wondering did any of you guys change the default logins on them? Is there any way to get them to use AD login details, at the actual login screen when the machine is turned on? Also do any of you have available any of the start up scripts you are using to add user shares etc?
Posted

Make sure you have windows XP pro on there

Yes have a default login for admin

yes you can have AD login details,

you need to have mandatory profiles, to speed up login on times- have less than 2mb profile size

you need to set the power options <--- such as turning off standby and hibernate mode. set the laptop to if the screen/lid is closed do nothing. a issue I'm having when kids close the lid while the laptops are shutting down it goes into a standby mode - wish i knew this about it before.

anything else PM me
