Extended Support Win 10

Morning all,

 

I'm aware of the bits of information MS have released like the $1 per device cost to extend the support and with some of our schools really struggling financially to cost up a complete refresh either refurbed or new, i'm wondering if anyone has any further information about how and where we can sign up to get it extended? I've tried our reseller but not really hearing anything back and I'm guessing that it might be a bit early to have the details because MS are probably hoping most refresh their devices rather than go down this route. 

 

Anyone know of any information?

If you've not been using it previously and thus don't have everything set up to sideload all the QoL stuff and modern features there's a fair bit of setup and configuration. Is all that technician time going to cost less than £1 per machine? (I guess this depends how many machines you've got left)

 

I asked our MS support about the licenses and they say the same. Apparently they've had a lot of schools asking about it, but haven't got any info from MS yet. My guess would be something will come out around August (either details of the extended licensing, or an announcement they're moving the ELO date back into '26)

Thanks both, like with most of us I'm guessing we could do with knowing sooner rather than later because most of the work will be done during school holidays and we could do with planning what we can get done. With Easter around the corner I was hoping that we can put some things in place and looks like it'll be a case of upgrading the devices that are compatible for now. 

 

I'd rather replace if at all possible, but schools are very non committal at the moment even though the upcoming issues have been raised with them.

I asked my reseller and they haven't had any info yet. Lots of people asking apparently but nothing yet to tell us.

Pricing from my reseller is

 

 

Year 1 - £0.96

Year 2 - £1.91

Year 3 - £3.83

 

Per device of course & can't order until October.

 

Of course there's the LTSC option as above, but that also means you have to flatten machines to the LTSC version of Office (2021 or 2019) & Teams desktop app isn't supported on it.

I've been quoted 96p first year for an individual device but there is suggestion, not confirmed by MS yet, that it may be as low as 75p per device if bought in blocks of 50 devices, rising comensurately year on year.

Our licence supplier says that they haven't been provided with any prices from Microsoft for extended support yet - could you let us know who you got your quote from?

Unfortunately I can't, the pricing has come down from my Trust in a briefing but they are sufficiently sure about it that they are handing it out to business managers to budget on.

Apparently it depends what licensing agreement you use. Our reseller says that the ESUs are available though (or at least visible for) EA or EES agreements, but there's no sign of them for CSP or OVS users yet.

I've emailed our licence supplier this morning regarding the ESU's, haven't heard anything back yet though.

Hmmm, I hope we can get them on OVS, otherwise we're up shi** creek with no paddle & will end up paying consumer prices..

 

Our usual licence provider isn't offering the education discounts so we will have to go elsewhere

I was wondering how Microsoft would know if you'd paid for the support or not and now we know!  It'll be fun assigning a different license key for each device - hope you don't have too many to do.

Could be the Windows key, could be a support key of some sort (perhaps added via a reg entry)? We can dream.

I thought you said it was an individual license key for each device?

 

You'd need to use something like the VAMT (Volume Activation Management Tool) to individually assign the MAK keys you'll be given?

Yes, but is it a license for the extended support through some mechanism (I don't know how that'd work!) per device, or a Windows Product Key? Probably the latter. Yeah, VAMT would probably be the only way - years since I've run it!

The mechanism will be Windows Updates and the MAK keys you will be given will change your OS from Windows 10 to Windows 10 with Supported Updates (or some such name that Microsoft decide) so when Windows checks for updates it will send whatever the name Microsoft call it to the Windows Updates server and then give you all the available Windows 10 updates.  The key will expire on a certain date (365 days after purchase) when you'll then need to buy some more at double the price and so on.
