Google Workspace Backup - Recommendations?

Hi all,

 

Currently evaluating our backup options for our central google tenant. I will be installing a NAS box with active backup capabilities so that it covers on-site, but I was wondering what people use cloud wise for their backups?

 

There seem to be so many options, acronis, backupify, afi, redstore, spanning, cubebackup etc etc.

 

Can anyone offer any information on the above, preferably with pricing?

 

I will be storing about 2.5 terabytes of data, and will probably only look to back up staff accounts and shared drives via the cloud due to costs.

Went to see another school who were using synology boxes and they have apps that can backup google or office365 for free apparently!

 

Gonna try it myself.

its not native Google format tho. It has to convert to an office standard... eg Google Doc = .docx etc etc

Is this to backup specific data in Google Drive or to backup your staff/student google accounts such as Drive and Gmail?

 

We currently use Spanning Backup to backup our staff and student accounts. Not entireley sure on the pricing as I don't deal with that part but I think it's £12,000 for 2000 licenses for the year. Not had to use it very much but has come in handy to restore a few things here and there.

 

I will say the one time I tried to restore a large folder it took forever. It seems the restore is very slow.

It does My Drive, Shared Drives, Gmail Calendar and i think Photos...

Yes, I used this in my old school. It was a great setup for local backups.

We're using Datto Backupify at an approximate cost of £1 per user per month.

AFI Backup here across about 20000 accounts and 30 or so sites. Really easy to setup and use, decent PAYG pricing and self service restores for end users - a big deal for us.

As good as file conversion is, the number of documents that will break is why it's not really a viable option IMHO.

 

I'd be looking at something that's properly Google native.

We use acronis at work. It’s works - been great for on-prem. Personally never had to restore from a cloud backup though.

I did contemplate using something like backblaze or wasabi to back up the on-prem synology.

Try Acronis through a partner. Unlimited users / servers if you want to backup students too.

A little late to this one sorry.

 

I'm using Synology on prem which also serves as an offline share should we lose the Internet (read only mapped via GPO in disaster scenario I just turn on the links). This backup is also rotated onto USB drives connected so we have an archive copy of the data (encrypted).

My online backup is split; A Google Cloud Compute server running CubeBackup pointing to Backblaze (50TB). This costs $2 per user licence per year £3.5k for Backblaze and approx £8 per day cloud services. The first upload will cost you, I think my first month was around £800 as I had 6TB to backup from Google. Cube does have a self service portal if you want to install it.

I'm also using Redstor mapped to the Synology to backup crucial data such as HR drives (SCR).

I think this might be the cheapest option; Backblaze is set to immutable buckets. Redstor can't be overwritten and I have rotating termly archives.

I've started playing with a system called Cubebackup. It costs $2 USD per user, per year and stores locally. Also it allows unlimited shared drive backups.

 

Really just testing for the future but it was easy to setup, works well and a nice UI.

We recently switched from Spanning (due to price rises) to Avepoint (https://www.avepoint.com/uk). The GUI isn't quite as functional /featured (file search , etc) as Spanning unfortuantely though but the pricing is more compeititve and it offers the functionality we need from a Google Workspace backup.

Hi, I went with the DS423+ with 4 x 2TB drives. Managed to get it for £799 from a supplier, it's a nice unit. No issues so far

Another one for CubeBackup here. Backing up to on-prem storage at the moment but have plans to also use wasabi in the not too distant future. Really impressed with their support too.
