Hidden things in your car

My old Civic has a hidden storage space under the rear seats

Basically the rear seats are on legs so the space under them is free

Naturally anything there tends to shoot forward if you brake!

 

But the seat also hav a feature where , as well as going down to make the whole boat area flat (for carrying bikes etc) they will also pivot upwards and lock in place so that you get a large area where the rear seats used to be - but with lots of head room for putting big stuff in

 

Took me several years of ownership to work out how to make the seats lock up (I suppose I could have read the manual/user-guide but who does that!!!)

so if you haven't figured it out in a year or so you could try reading it??

I have 3 grandkids

There are lots of things hidden in my car - mostly rotting - mostly crisps and sweets (probably - some just fluffy)

some plastic things

occasional dinosaurs and cars

I once went to buy a car and was shown it by the son of the previous owner - his old uncle who'd recently died. It hadn't been used since then and we found full ashtrays, cigar boxes etc

He opened the boot which had a pile of, err, gentlemen 's magazines in it

We looked at each other a bit embarrassed and he said he'd clean the car before sale....

I haven't needed it, so why waste precious time looking for it? Cross that bridge when I get there etc.

Years ago I had a transit van and I found a simple black switch that disconnected the ignition installed by previous owner. I used it when parking up.

It saved it from being stolen twice when thieves broke into and couldn't start it.

Maybe something that needs to come back into fashion?

Something I did actually manage to do once in my old Fiesta....

 

It wasn't keyless obviously, but it had the new fangled 'feature' of being able to unlock the boot separately (it's a one time thing that then re-locks the boot when you close it). Picture me at the local recycling centre, getting out of the car locking it (for security) and using this cool feature to unlock my boot and empty the rubbish... putting my keys down as I had no pockets and needed both hands for the job. Anyway, as I pulled out the last load I absent-mindedly closed the boot, the indicators flashed letting me know that the car was now re-locked again and then realising my keys were actually still in the boot.

 

My old Fiesta had a gap at the rear of the handbrake lever just large enough for the keys to slither down out of reach into the dark underworld below the actual interior. This happened to me in a [busy] car wash. Thankfully one of the attendants found a length of electrical cable that they fashioned into a hook to retireve them, and therefore unblock the car wash.

Was speaking to my father-in-law the other day and his old Suzuki had something similar under the bonnet. You could flip the switch and pull it out to cut all the electrics - he hadn't known this and it had worked its way loose so he and my mother-in-law had to push it a few miles uphill and leave it in a layby overnight! His dad came to take a look the next day and just pushed it back down and the car sprung to life again. Can't remember what model he said the car was but still

Down the side of the driver/passenger seats has become the new sofa. There will always be at least £1.20 in your car at any one time.

I discovered that my 13 year old Renault Megane's cup holder was designed so that you could only fit a thimble sized cup of coffee in it, your goosed if you visit a Costa drive through.

Still looking for the full sized one.

I had the same on my old CZ, I lost my key or it broke or something, I used a nail and screwdriver for months. Never did get it fixed, after all, who the hell is gonna nick a CZ.

In my old Skoda, the backs of the rear seats tipped forward to reveal extra storage.

Also a flap you could lift that opened above the starter motor.

This was really handy, I kept a hammer there so I could whack the starter motor when needed!
