Hi

Is there any way to stop/block the adverts that play before YouTube clips?

Our teachers use YT a lot and it would be great if there was a way to not have to wait for the ad to run before playing the videos.

You can just pop a dash between the t & u into any url like so

 

https://www.yout-ube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

 

 

Will open the youtube-nocookie.com version of the video which plays full screen with no ads.

Oooo I like that!!

Although I'm not sure the teachers will all be bothered to edit the links on their planning documents!

But I love your suggestion and will use it where/when I can!

Smoothwall used to have an option that would block Youtube Ads but I believe it's currently broken.

 

Side note: I love the yout-ube idea, i'm using that.

EDIT: I've found that it doesn't work on all videos.

If it's a google school I was under the impression there are no adverts in youtube if they are embedded into classroom.

 

 

If you have onsite DNS you can always hijack youtube.com and redirect it to a nocookie version.

Is it something that can be done with Windows Group Policy?

 

I've got for Chrome: User Config -> Policies -> Admin Templates -> Google/Google Chrome -> Extensions -> Configure the list of force-installed apps and extensions [Enabled] -> Extension/App IDs etc... [cjpalhdlnbpafiamejdnhcphjbkeiagm;https://clients2.google.com/service/update2/crx]

Yes, you can deploy any Chrome Web Store app through the Google Admin console, by browsing to:

 

Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers

Select the OU you want to deploy the extension to.

Then click the yellow + button and Add from Chrome Web Store. Search for uBlock Origin and then Force install.

 

Just be aware that uBlock may break certain websites if they have anti-adblock code. However, on the whole, it's pretty decent with the default settings.

I would recommend not force installing and instead just making it an optional install for the users who want it.

 

Add the extension to Admin > Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers > OU, set it to Allow install and enable to option to include in the Chrome Web Store collection. When users go to the Chrome Web Store, they'll see and option near the top of the lefthand menu called "For School Name" which will list any extensions that you've opted to include in the collection.

 

Also worth setting the global allow/block mode to one of the "Block all" options if you haven't already. Admin > Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers > OU > Additional settings > Allow/block mode. Then you'll want to set the equivalent in Group Policy (Computer Configuration > Policies > Admministrative Templates > Google > Google Chrome > Extensions > "Block external extensions from being installed" and "Configure extension installation allow list").

Won't ever be reliably able to block pre roll adds. They are served from same domains as videos. They are scripts that attempt to add user submitted domains but not so succesful.
