Sorry, @mavhc I deleted the post as I found it just after I posted... :doh:

 

So in Chrome > Click on the 'Extensions' jigsaw piece (top right in upper toolbar) > Choose uBlock Origin from the list of extensions > In the pop-up box hover over the 'power button' symbol for options...

 

I take it you have a got a way to 'pin' the uBO shield for users then?

 

EDIT: Does this update itself or is there something else that needs putting in?

Can a Google Workspace school purchase an add free version of Youtube?

 

Just trying to find other options.

 

As far as I'm aware, YouTube Premium is for consumer use only (I haven't checked lately, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if this has changed!)

I was under the impression that if you were signed into your school Google Workspace account that you wouldn't get adverts... is this wrong?

 

I've just clicked on about 10 videos and wasn't served a single advert... which is unheard of if you are just normally clicking on videos when you you are using a 'normal' account (or aren't signed in).

I just opened a video using my Workspace account and an advert starting playing before the video played.

 

We do have restricted mode enabled, but in the info it says that doesn't change the users advert settings or block any ads.

Ah OK, my bad then... maybe it's changed don't know where I heard that, but I'm sure I remember that being a 'thing' at one point!

 

Anyway you are right, just opened up Edge and signed-in to Google Workspace, went to YouTube and... advert!

 

It's probably that we have uBlock Origin installed then in Chrome.

Revisiting this one (after a couple of years) with a bit of a query - thinking of reviving in anger a previous google school setup that never really got going.

 

If we have google accounts set up for teachers and students with GCDS and chrome sign-ins, and they dutifully sign in to chrome (although I'm hoping there's something in an SSO thing out there that handles this) will they still be served youtube ads or does this stop it?

 

Nothing like a couple of breakfast cereal or mobile game ads to really enhance a lesson/assembly!

Logged into chrome and youtube with my work google account and I still get ads. Although I don't have specific youtube policies or anything applied to my account.

Google are missing a trick with Premium being restricted to personal accounts only, and not offering it as a Workspace addon.

 

Not sure whether the Ad Blocking category in SchoolProtect/Netsweeper would block it, but given YouTube have anti-adblock warnings now, it's a little iffy (though given they use the same EasyList filter that all the browser extensions use as the basis for that category, that at least should be updated frequently, though whether it's frequently enough is another question).

Will open the youtube-nocookie.com version of the video which plays full screen with no ads.

 

I just asked Gemini to create me an app for teachers to enter a YouTube URL and the app would supply them with the new YouTube link but with the modified t-u url link.

 

Its come back with a website script. not tested it yet.

Jus be aware when using these AI tools with sensitive/research data. Yep this was reported in Chrome via AI 🙂
