You're right. Operator isn't full 'admin' access. There is only one (to the best of my knowledge) a single admin account on NVRs & Hikvision doesn't let you add any more (at least on the 100+ NVRs that I've worked w/ from them in the past). You could always use SADP to click the 'reset password' option. You may have to speak to your installer if the security questions/e-mail are out of date, unknown etc. Do you know which model of NVR you're using? 'Operator' users get a set of permissions defined when the account is created/edited by the 'master' admin account. Reboot device is an explicit permission which, evidently - was denied by your installer. If your installer doesn't play ball - you can email an XML file to Hikvision which will do a trad. challenge/response where you can then import the file via SADP which will let you reset the Admin password. Hikvision may make you jump through any number of hoops before giving you the response file, annoyingly... Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info! Would this be suitable? I couldn't find much that showed pre-terminated that was outside-grade. Black PVC conduit is designed to protect from UV etc I think?! 🤣 In terms of the SFP vs SFP+: Could I buy 2x SFP+ modules (inc. 1 for the non-SFP+ capable switch) then & it would auto-negotiate back to the correct speeds? The SFP Switch is Cisco so will have to look into if such switches are 'fussy' over which bits etc are used... :/

Hi all, I'm doing some network upgrades in my house & would like to run some Fibre-Optic cable between two switches I have in the house. Complete 'newbie' when it comes to Fibre; so I need some guidance as to what cable/bits I need to purchase. Here's my setup: Firewall is Sophos XG w/ the 10-Gigabit SFP+ Module(s) installed, I'd then need a cable to go between this & my Ubiquiti 48-Port PoE Switch (that also has SFP+) ports - THEN, I'd be going from this switch, through the floors (under floor-boards) and out the exterior of the house for approximately 5m (likely in conduit?) before going into the annexe where it'll connect to the next switch. Everything is 10-Gig capable apart from the last switch. Does it matter if I just use an SFP+ and then a SFP module to connect the switches? Any cable that's recommended? Aware there's loads of different types. Aim is to upgrade the last switch to 10-Gig capable when finances permit...! Thanks.

I believe the in-built recovery was introduced in macOS 10.7 and above (along w/ newer Macs). Your best option would be to find an original installation media. If it's a 2009 Mac it can go up to El-Capitan (Generally). This is still available via the Apple Website to the best of my knowledge. Just watch out for a bug that existed with the Date/Time where you need to jump into Terminal to kick start the installation.

Profile Manager isn't really fit for deployment - macOS Server is dead etc; so treat PM as purely (for lack of a better description) - a 'Proof of Concept' sort of thing. Purely a stepping stone to the likes of Jamf, etc (although Apple (likely!) will never admit this)!

Newer BSkyB products are particularly annoying to configure IMO. I ended up sticking them in their own VLAN w/ unfiltered access to get everything working; as segmenting traffic, VLANs etc were a nightmare (especially if you're looking to use the Multicasting stuff etc) - you'd have to then look at Relays, etc (at least, from past experience). Maybe try a sniffing tool to see if that can shed some light?

The two immediate choices that come to mind are: *pfSense (Free, used widely) *Smoothwall Express (Free, used (less?) widely) - Not too sure if the product is still being developed though. I remember you could add on 'some' filtering (w/ the likes of/'Dan's Guardian'); but to what extent is something I've forgotten over the years. EDIT: Yes - Astro was bought out by Sophos and was merged into their 'UTM' lineup. I believe that's also been killed (or in the process of). Their newest Firewall is XG; but again - not free (unless for Home use).

You need to import your files into the 'Music' Application. Once they're imported, navigate to Finder, select your iDevice, click "Music", Sync Library and that'll auto-populate the list w/ all of the items you have in the Music App. You also have the option to then sync over WiFi for subsequent syncs. Whilst using AirDrop is supported; it's not designed to work for importing files into the respective Apps (Music, Videos etc) - They'd just be present in the 'Files' App which is not what you want.

Avid Media Composer has a free tier. You'd have to check if it supports the resolution; but being the 'industry standard' - I can't anticipate it'd have many issues working with such a resolution.

Behringer X32 for a School. I believe it also supports Dante & allows a stage box to be provisioned using Ethernet. Studios etc are moving more towards that than traditional (full) tie-lines.

I've never deployed Pro Tools in a Domain Environment. All the machines I've provisioned have been local only w/ a standard user account. Tracking etc over the Network isn't really supported; so if they're still using Home Drives, this may cause another problem down the line. Could you add an 'Elevate w/out prompting' GPO perhaps? (Again, years ago since I've touched Group Policy so these settings may be depreciated!). Pro Tools Intro is the replacement for Pro Tools First. I'm Pro Tools Certified (101); so let me know if you have any other questions about using the software.

You've both been a massive help! Kudos given. I've done some further research & it's as follows: Apparently Virgin Media's "VoIP" (at least at the Consumer Level) is actually CV21? Not too sure what that means; but apparently not 'true VoIP'? I've learned that it uses some IP 'thing' on their SuperHub to dial-back to Virgin's Datacentre/Exchange; and then goes back to regular copper lines from there into their telephone network. From the information I've learned - does that alter what I'd potentially need? I don't think they'd have any SIP info (as it looks as if it doesn't exist)? Cheers.

Quick update: I think I've found a way to do it. You need to use the iOS "Health" app to setup a sleep schedule/alarm. There's a slider there to adjust the volume of the alarm. I've 'tested' this by going back & forth between Music & checking the ringer. The volume within Health remains independent (at least in my experience). Does this suggestion work for you?

I'm under contract w/ Virgin Media so not too sure how this would work as I'm already paying them for the phone & would like to avoid paying someone else! Is there any way to get it working w/ some additional hardware to keep things local? I'm not worried about having multiple lines per-say. Even if I could use the Internal phones to call other parts of the house & have a single outbound line that'd be good enough. Is there such a thing as a Hybrid system (i.e could I buy an interface card to connect the old line to the PC & get an IP system to recognise the outbound line)?

The ringer volume also controls alerts/alarms etc. There is currently no way to change this.

Hi everyone. Happy New Year. I'm wanting to setup a VoIP System here at Home & have no experience in doing so from scratch. I've got 3CX Setup on a spare Desktop to test (w/ some compatible phones) so good to go apart from being able to use our external landline system with the new setup. We're with Virgin Media & when upgrading to their (no so) new "SuperHub" they have deactivated our copper line (after an engineer visit - I wasn't present otherwise I'd have told them to leave it) & we now have to plug in the main Landline to the back of their SuperHub in order to get a dial tone. I want to be able to use our landline number w/ our internal VoIP system to use our telephone number from the phones to make outbound calls and "talk" to the outside phone network. How would I go about doing this & what equipment would I need? Cost isn't a massive issue here as our existing phones now won't work due to the change in range from where the old BT socket was. Do I need some sort of Analogue Phone Adapter (such as the ones from Cisco) or a SIP Trunk? What would the connection path be, if so? Thanks.

This is a solid suggestion. I'd also normally advocate going for the SDI version (and applicable cameras) over HDMI in most cases.

I work in commercial media/broadcasting. I'm not a vendor, however I can advise on the bits of kit you'd need based on your budget etc.

Hi everyone, Just needing a second opinion on a proposed new storage solution for our small business network. I manage a Creative Media firm & in the process of changing our central storage. Previously we were using Dell PowerEdge Servers to host file shares; however we've just upgraded to a Mac Mini M1 w/ 10GbE. We have an older LaCie 8Big Thunderbolt Enclosure w/ SATA III 4TB Drives which used to be connected to one of the Mac Pro's directly. Our new proposed solution would be to connect the LaCie 8Big directly to the new Mac Mini & use this as a File Server and migrate the shares over etc (w/ all of the clients also being 10GbE ready). From my understanding, Thunderbolt 2 (albeit, yes - it's 2 generations old now) is 'faster' than the throughput of SATA III SSD's & should be fine performance wise? However, as we'd be using 8 of the drives (the LaCie has a RAID controller & we'd be using RAID 10) - would the maximum throughput of Thunderbolt 2 be a bottleneck at all? (SATA III = 6Gbps | Thunderbolt 2 = 20Gbps) - Would a Thunderbolt 3/4 solution be a better option & gain extra performance if we're using SATA III SSD's? I'm not normally used to dealing with Thunderbolt (actively avoided it for years). However, until the new Mac Pro appears - using this solution for the next 6-12 months looks to be better than using our current (ageing) PowerEdge hardware. Our main work is in Music Production & odd bits of video editing (very rare these days). We'd have 5 computers (maximum) running Pro Tools and would be writing a 4GB file over the network every 15 minutes to the Server during the working day. Hopefully the above is enough for someone to offer some feedback/guidance?
