2021 -- what anti virus are you using at home?? - and password manager

As promised I am taking this to a specific thread to save it going off topic

 

 

But I was wondering what anti virus people are using at home at the moment

 

I know it has been done before but the environment changes over time so I thought it was worth seeing where people are now

 

Sophos Home looks good - any comments??

 

Basically I am currently using Avast Free which seem to work fine and has spotted a few incoming threats - OK - and a few false positives but better that than missing something

 

It seems fine and has a few good points (free being one of them) but does tend to nag about paying from time to time - but then that is probably to be expected

 

 

which all brings up another point

 

AVAST also acts as a password manager - and seem to do it pretty well

 

is there any way to export==>Import stuff like this to swap to another product???

Defender. Personally I don’t see the point in installing anything else when it performs so well in benchmark tests

I use Defender too and use AdBlockPlus in Chrome

If you have Sophos Intercept X in school you can get Sophos Home Premium for FREE.

 

Also 1Password had been amazing for password manager. Works across Windows. Apple and Android and also have browser extensions!

might want to look at taking the passwords out of AVAST and use something else - but loads of trouble if I have to sort out the passwords for every website I ever visit!

Depends on the password manager and the format that it uses to import/export.

 

Lastpass can export its database to a text file and Dashlane can import it. Dashlane can also import from the major browsers, from 1Password, Roboform, Keepass, PasswordWallet and a custom CSV.

 

I moved from Lastpass when they got bought out by LogMeIn and used Dashlane's import tools to move my password database. Considering LogMeIn's record on security, I didn't trust them any more.

Windows Desktop 10 (Video Editing & Design) - Defender and MalwareBytes

Windows Desktop 10 (Music Editing) - Nothing (it has limited access to the Internet and will soon go once I rebuild the Video Editing desktop)

Windows 7 (CNC controller) - Nothing (no access to Internet, don't use USB drives and has read only access to a shared dump folder to get the CNC programs from the desktops)

 

Use a password manager but I do not install any browser extensions.

 

I try to keep desktops pretty uncluttered on the whole but I run an WDS/MDT server at home so very easy and quick to rebuild Windows OS'es

Lastpass can import via csv and Avast can export. With most of the options you could get a free version/trial and check the transfer works before you commit.

 

I keep thinking about moving from Lastpass because of the LogMeIn issue but can't bring myself to pay the annual £39.99 for Dashlane.

 

I haven't managed to persuade any of my family to use a password manager as they all think it's too complicated and that I'm paranoid. I have far fewer password difficulties than any of them.

 

Another Windows Defender user here. In the past I used to swap most years based on the reviews, but I found all of them more intrusive and system heavy in the end. Defender didn't used to be good enough, but the reviews suggest that it's close now and hopefully with a bit of common sense from the user I'll be ok [emoji1696]

I have used Sophos Home for about 3 years now. It gives you 10 devices that you can add to your account and manage through a web browser so most of my family's devices are also on there.

I do pay the £35 per year fee to upgrade Premium because it lets me use the app to manage them all from my phone, and it adds ransomware protection and a few other bits and bobs.

 

For a password manager I use Dashlane and was very happy with it until this year - they had a desktop program that works great but now they're pushing only having a web browser plugin. They seem to be under the mistaken impression that you only ever need passwords when logging in to websites, whereas I have a lot of game launchers (for example) that all need them.

But it does have a mobile app and syncs across well so for now I'm sticking with it. Might look into LastPass because it's the same annual price but I could share it with up to 4 other family members...

I don't use a proper antivirus other than Windows Defender. As for a password manger, I just use the password manger built into Google Chrome.

 

I used to use Avast in 2014 but I haven't had a proper antivirus since 2015. I only download software I trust and downloading virus filled software is usually where viruses come from.

ESET AV at home. Not free, but I don't mind paying knowing it works, I get it on educational pricing which helps. For passwords, all saved in Google account, then I know I can get them on PC or phone.

When I moved from Lastpass to Bitwarden self hosted they had a CSV export option in LastPass. Bitwarden then had a handy LastPass import utility i could use. Not sure about other managers though.

• Main PC: Comodo Free Internet Security (mainly because it can be set to give what I feel is the "right" level of notifications)
  
• HTPC and Windows Tablet: Windows Defender
  
• Android Phone and Tablet: None
  

 

Browser:

 

 

• All Windows devices: Firefox with UBlock, Privacy Badger and NoScript and set to dump most cookies on exit
  
• HTPC and Windows Tablet: Also have Brave set to dump all cookies on exit for most browsing as FF too resource hungry for extended browsing on them (these aren't used for browsing much anyway)
  
• Android Phone and Tablet: FF set to dump most cookies on quit (Mozilla, why did you mess up this behaviour?) for sites I need to sign into, DuckDuckGo for general browsing
  

 

Password Manager:

 

 

• All devices: "Normal" sites FF built in (also have Mozilla Lockwise on Android), sites that I want more secure I use Bitwarden and don't store the passwords in FF. Still have KeePass on Windows devices, but it's fugly and I can't remember when I last used it.

Might be looking again at Lastpass...

 

I used to pay for the premium version as that was the only way to get cross device support (I know that cross device support means trusting someone else with your database, but that seems like a worthwhile trade off for me) but went back to the free account when they made it part of that. However, I've just read the reviews again and they've taken "Digital Inheritance" out of the free offering. If something happened to me, my family would really struggle to access everything needed to sort out my affairs without access to my password manager.

 

Also recently started using Sophos Intercept X for Android - not sure how good it is, but previously didn't use anything on my phone and it's got to be better than that, hasn't it....
