There was another light flurry yesterday evening, which froze on top of cars overnight. Nothing more than that, though. That said, we were a couple of weeks behind the rest of the country, back in 2018...

Daughter has to drive 20 miles for a Health&Safety course so she can work on railway lines (she’s an ecologist) Her company won’t let anyone drive their own vehicle for work purposes so her hire car turned up last night... an automatic Mercedes c300d. She ordered a small manual hatchback which she would much rather have in the current road conditions. Daughter’s two day course got abandoned at lunchtime. They couldn’t do the practical on the rail tracks because by then the snow was covering the rails... including the electrified 3rd rail. Being able to see the third rail was deemed kind of important.

Health and Safety GONE MAD!!!!! damn Eu regulations on a serious note - in the old days when I had a proper job in a proper office - I used to commute to work on a train with a 3rd rail for power (Merseyrail) one day there was ice everywhere and when the train on the other side the train stopped and the contact must have been a short distance from the rail so it arched AMAZING blue light lit up the whole area for the while time the train was stopped - no idea how the ice didn't just melt but it was amazing massive power carried by that rail!!!

Still only -1 so if it snows It will prob settle as pavements have dried out since yesterday. Hoping it thaws out so I can go for a run without fear of slipping over. mikeprice Posted February 10, 2021 Posted February 10, 2021 no more snow here - but the very small amount that fell yesterday and didn't see enough Sun to melt if still around still damn cold weirdly - I cycled along a country road at the back of the airport this afternoon and there are several areas that had previously been flooded most were dried out - especially the big ones but one area that had had a small flood (i.e. only a metre or so going through water and worrying about wet feet) still had the whole road covered with solid but cracked ice bike tyres were wandering around in a worrying manner - mind you they are pretty much slicks so not really ice tyres no snow forecast for the next week as far as I can see

Road and cars outside my place has gone white!

Sheltered spots still look someone's been playing with polystyrene, but nothing other than short, light showers. weirdly - I cycled along a country road at the back of the airport this afternoon and there are several areas that had previously been flooded most were dried out - especially the big ones It's actually been really good drying weather - breezy, lots of sunshine, low humidity. I've had a few loads of washing out this week and they've been dry by the time I've finished working. It's also been really good walking weather, but I've not been able to get out until close to sunset. What's more, you can almost guarantee it will break by the weekend and be rubbish over half-term.

StevieM Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 Temperature of -23C in Braemar is UK's lowest in 25 years I remember it being -17C in Crosby, back in 2010. It was so cold, I had icicles forming on my beard! (I'll see if I can find a photo.)

Yeah - back in the old days That may have been the year we had snow in Rhyl - where I used to teach a new Head started - first thing she asked for was the snow policy - just in case and because the school she had come from had closed most years she was told - forget it - Sunny Rhyl never closes - never snows - clouds just scoot over the top and drop it all on the hills 2 weeks later she had to close the school for snot - and it stayed closed for several weeks in case the little darling fell over on their way in because most of then walked in staff had to come in though or not be paid - all insisted on by the LEA - but the local paper still blamed the school!!! modern snowflakes - gets a bit cold and they want the day off when I were a lad a snow day meant you MIGHT be allowed to wear your outdoor coat in class!!!!
