gopher_1999 Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 We finally got the Bios password for the the Covid netbooks and are rebuilding them to our own build. Fairly awful machines, but free is a good price.
pinemarten Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 We just got our 13 laptops for Year 10, handing them out next week . Last week of term. What's the point ? - no work to be set over Summer and they are all back in September..... Another waste of money.
saggu Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 we got 12 Microsoft laptops. the parent agreement paper mentions to contact school for technical issues. how can we support if the devices are LA not ours?
DrBeaker Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Ha. When does anything the government do regarding schools ever make sense? 2
mikeprice Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Ha. When does anything the government do regarding schools ever make sense? Soooo many comments to want to make so many amphibious reasons to refrain
mullet_man Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 I've made a point of installing Office on them as I had a feeling that would be required. But, on working through the list of laptops from the LEA, 5 of our students are Year 11!!!! What's the point? We're unlikely to see then ever again (and lets face it unlikely to do work any way), and also heard one has moved out of the area! PeteAm now getting requests about installing office, who do I request the admin password from?
mullet_man Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Am now getting requests about installing office, who do I request the admin password from?I've found the link above to request the local admin passwords, are they pretty quick to respond?
FragglePete Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 I've found the link above to request the local admin passwords, are they pretty quick to respond? Yes - very quick. They'll send you an encrypted spreadsheet with the passwords against each serial number. They will then send the password via a text message to you so you can open it. Obviously some algorithm used to generate the passwords against the serial number me thinks - now if only we could work that one out! Pete
enjay Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 What's the point ? - no work to be set over Summer and they are all back in September..... Another waste of money. They get to keep the laptop until they leave school. When they give it back, you can give it to another disadvantaged student.
JordanT91 Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 (edited) We didn't request any laptops because the Head didn't want to (for various valid reasons I won't go in to). We found out last week, though, that the social workers of 20 of our pupils have requested them on their behalf. We know for a fact most of these children have internet connections and laptops at home but hey-ho. So we've received all the paperwork, I've sorted it into named envelopes and crossed out the bit where it says to contact school for support. The other option was their social worker so that's who they'll need to contact. However, the laptops haven't turned up yet. We break up on Friday. There's no way they're going out before September now, we've all got far too much on this week. What a mess. Edited July 13, 2020 by JordanT91
ejacklin Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 We have dealt wit several LAs across our MAT where it is clear the devices for Social Worker children are devices given to the MAT for ownership and distribution. But, one LA (North Yorkshire) is now saying they are loan devices from the LA and a loan agreement must be signed. Anyone come across this oddity in that the LA are retaining ownership?

So far no across three LA's. Surely they're mistaken?

Someone from our LA turned up in Reception and said "I'm dropping a laptop off for a student", then left. No loan agreements or anything, in fact I don't think they even said they were from the LA. They didn't even tell us the student's name, we had to contact the LA to ask!
TwistedHelixis Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I believe our LA requested Chrome books instead of laptops, so they could easily be managed across multiple schools.
MrBitey Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 I believe our LA requested Chrome books instead of laptops, so they could easily be managed across multiple schools. We've been given Chromebooks too. Nice little Dells. Works well for us as we've been using Google Classroom for all our home learning. 1

Yep, our LA wouldn't even engage with the school.
TwistedHelixis Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Yep, our LA wouldn't even engage with the school. Say they are not fit for your environment, point out that in the government info they should have consulted with the school, and request something different. Now wake up and realise that will never work :0)

Our LA claimed they own the devices and it is loan to the pupils. They can ask to return the devices if they want to. School do not own the devices.
andy_b Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 So seemingly, pupils are setting the localuser password and then forgetting it
LeMarchand Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 So seemingly, pupils are setting the localuser password and then forgetting it IIRC I tried to do that and it wasn't allowed.
6Foot2 Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 IIRC I tried to do that and it wasn't allowed. I found that one of the six devices we were supplied with had no BIOS password. Perhaps there was an error in configuration/setup with more than one of these laptops...

Perhaps there was an error in configuration/setup with more than one of these laptops... You'd imagine that it was the same image on all of them. I didn't test the BIOS password. Hopefully that won't be a mistake!
andy_b Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 IIRC I tried to do that and it wasn't allowed. just tested it another one - can def set a user password that survives a reboot.
