Ditto Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 I wonder why people behave like that? I think virus requires a living host to survive - one of those in the photo has eyes shut, and perhaps.... Seriously though, on the masks I agree, I recently went to an upholsters and the chap wasn't wearing a mask. I asked if he wanted me to wear a mask as we were discussing the repair outside, but I continue to wear a mask in shops etc. Increasingly I feel in the minority on this front and the recent dropping case numbers are rising again. It's been very mild to date and I know from a hospital worker that flu season hasn't started yet and beds are already full. I'm increasingly unconvinced herd immunity is around the corner enough to bring numbers down, so more mask wearing seems a minor inconvenience for the potential benefit.
Andrew_C Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 "Herd Immunity" only works if you become immune to the disease by either vaccine or infection. Neither seem to apply with C19. There is potential for a new variety of vaccine the will provide immunity, but how far away it might be (if it is possible at all) is anyone's guess.
jthompson Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 I'm increasingly unconvinced herd immunity is around the corner enough to bring numbers down, so more mask wearing seems a minor inconvenience for the potential benefit. There's presumably a tension at play between more infections either: putting evolutionary pressure on the virus to make it less and less potent. bringing about new, more dangerous strains. I'd agree that mask wearing seems to be a trivial way to reduce the risk of the second one.

I understand there is modelling to suggest dropping cases based on a national level of immunity of catching it leading to severe symptoms or hospitalisation, so not full immunity. But like you, I'm not seeing evidence of this with C19 at the moment. Additionally, unlike flu, it's not looking strongly seasonal at present. Interesting point on new vaccines. With the mRNA versions, we have been told it would be quick to build new ones compared to the first version. Whilst the current ones retain good efficacy, it has dropped with variants. Yet, I don't see much commentary on updated vaccines.
mavhc Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 New study shows if both people in a household are double vaccinated, and one gets covid, 25% chance of the other one catching it too.
Ditto Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 New study shows if both people in a household are double vaccinated, and one gets covid, 25% chance of the other one catching it too. Wow, shows how effective the vaccine is. I recall this so that's a massive impact. Anecdotally, with local outbreaks, it hadn't been that good, but it has varied with some households 100% and others at nearer 25%. The severity of infection between the two adults in the households also varied enormously and no sign of gender bias, from barely noticeable to 10 days confined to bed and very unpleasant. Fortunately no hospitalisations amongst the people I know.
Andrew_C Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 New study shows if both people in a household are double vaccinated, and one gets covid, 25% chance of the other one catching it too.Hmmm... I'd take that with a pinch of salt. 100% of those I've heard of personally.
mavhc Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 That's why they gather more than a few people for the study, so the results are more accurate than the 4 people one person knows
Andrew_C Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 That's why they gather more than a few people for the study, so the results are more accurate than the 4 people one person knowsYou know, I'd never have thought of that. FFS...
jmak Posted November 2, 2021 Posted November 2, 2021 From when the isolation rules for contacts were "relaxed" they've had a different set for the NHS. Amongst other rules, you still have to isolate if someone in your household tests positive. Always seemed like a sensible half way option for everyone.
Andrew_C Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Amongst other rules, you still have to isolate if someone in your household tests positive . "unless you are exempt" which includes double jabbed. Which is bonkers.
jmak Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 "unless you are exempt" which includes double jabbed. Which is bonkers. Not in our local hospital. Even triple vaccinated (which is more most staff now) have to stay at home if it's someone in their household.
jthompson Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 Hmmm... I'd take that with a pinch of salt. 100% of those I've heard of personally. It could be that the study involved regularly testing all participants, such that asymptomatic cases are included. It may be that there are lots of other people you know who've taken COVID home asymptomatically, not known that they're infected, yet not passed it on to anyone else in their household. I would imagine that there's more of that going on than we're aware of, since not everybody is doing tests every few days.
paulkerton Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 The one thing the last 24 months has confirmed for me is that if Lord of the Rings was set in the real world, Frodo would have got to the end of his road then gone: "Ah, it's a really long way. I'll just put the ring in a safe. The one with the combination on a post-it on it. Gandalf can sort out the other stuff? I'll let him know the next time I see him. If I see him." To be fair, that's exactly what Frodo's original plan was. Hide it in Bag End! 1
jthompson Posted November 3, 2021 Posted November 3, 2021 To be fair, that's exactly what Frodo's original plan was. Hide it in Bag End! Well, it wasn't until Rivendell that he was actually provided with any decent PPE. 2

You can now access the booking site 5 months from the day you got your second jab. It'll be a few days under 6 months when I get mine [emoji41]
