GrumbleDook Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 I’m starting to rebuild my office at home and need to do a bit of noise reduction. Whilst I have some decent networking kit it is a tad noisy and not that energy efficient. Looking for recommendations on options for reasonably priced, fanless, gigabit switches (minimum 8 port) to replace the present behemoth I have.

If you want a proper, managed, PoE switch, then how's about the Ubiquiti US-8-150W: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01G55FYU4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title £180 from Amazon, "arrives before valentine's day" - you can buy a switch for the one you love! 2
3s-gtech Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 I bought one of these for home. Silent, easily capable of dealing with my home use (streaming, multiple consoles, media sharing etc) and silly cheap. TP-LINK TL-SG1008D-V6 8 Port Gigabit Desktop Switch https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001EVGIYG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_Ub7AhbsRDCgEH 1
MatthewL Posted February 9, 2020 Posted February 9, 2020 I've got a D-Link DGS-1100-08P of all switches, POE, L2 managed. Not my first choice but for £30 cannot complain. 1
pete Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I've been running a HP 1810-24G v2 (J9803A) for 7 years in a west-facing office that gets full sun without issue. eBay will have them for a few quid. 1
steveg Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 If you don't need it to be a smart switch, I've always liked netgears desktop range - the metal ones, the plastic ones have always been a bit cheap and not great. something like https://www.ebuyer.com/47407-netgear-prosafe-gs108-8-port-gigabit-metal-desktop-switch-gs108uk they also do a 16 port version 1
bald_pig Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I avoid netgear personally, always had issues, I currently use a D-Link switch at home: https://www.ebuyer.com/392450-d-link-go-sw-8g-go-8-port-gigabit-switch-go-sw-8g 1
DJ-1701 Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I avoid netgear personally, always had issues If you were buying the small Netgears over a decade ago, I would agree, but they aren't bad these days, use them at home with no issues for years. 1

I use something similar (if not identical) that the school we feed to was throwing out. 1
mavhc Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 No manufacturer would continue to sell crappy products and survive, if they're at a similar price point they'll likely be of similar quality 1

I've even had the 24/48 port managed switches keel over on me, I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw them! 1
john Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I use the Netgear metal ones at home totally silent and been bulletproof for over 6 years now no issues at all. 1
GrumbleDook Posted February 10, 2020 Author Posted February 10, 2020 What kit do you have at the moment? The last of my old 3COM kit ... 24 port 10/100/1000 managed switch running 3 VLANs (Wired, Wireless, and Guest Wireless/Peripherals) but that can go now. It is not being heavily pushed but the constant fan drone interferes with any audio recording I do, and also is annoying background noise in phone calls. Thanks to everyone for the pointers so far ... I'll see what I can pick up after next pay day!
GrumbleDook Posted February 10, 2020 Author Posted February 10, 2020 What capabilities? I had been using some VLANs (a little QoS on it) but I'm happy to flatten that now ... no real need since I am on a decent line, and I'm not too worried about internal segregation. I might change my mind on that as the kids grow up so it is something to consider when thinking is this a short or long-term purchase.

I have one of these at home, completely silent! Gets a tad warm especially in the summer but I've never had any issues, just mounted it to the drywall!
supportman Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Any of the Gen 2 ubiquity switches are silent. they've been totally redesigned.

We've got four around the school now as add-ons to provide more PoE ports in certain locations where we need a cluster of CCTV cameras or phones. I'm impressed by the cloud-based management console - you get the device connected up and it just kind of sorts itself out, picking up setting and updates from a central console.

Agreed, great bit of kit and the UI is really intuitive, even an app to manage the system which I use quite frequently. The only reason I haven't yet installed the switches into our environment is because they can't be stacked

It also had a constant fan drone until I disconnected the fans. Its been running fanless for the last 12 years and hasn't burst into flames yet
