£19.5k down here now, 220 computers, 8 Windows servers (2 running vmware which run -> 4 linux servers), 1 apple server, 2 ISCSI SAN devices, 13 managed switches, 30 IWB's, 1 linux phone server and 40 voip phone extensions, all the sound equipment in the school, all the lighting equipment in the hall and drama studio, for 600 pupils and 110 staff.

unfortunately schools will try and get blood out NM for next to nothing because they can I recently had an Job agency phone me up to ask if I needed a technician. I asked what salary they would want and it was higher than mine . I then asked what they would what for a NM and it was £50k. Sure you don't get Pension or job security but with BSF coming in it thats going anyway. I told them to email the CV of this technician to my line manager which I used to ask for money.. Unfortunately they have no money well not for support staff anyway

SO 1/2 circa £24k at the moment. I got onto this scale by writing to the governing body asking for a py rise and stating what I was doing and what had been done since I started. The first time they said no, teh second I had an interview lined up elsewhere (lucky timing!) so they said yes :-)

 

520 PCs and laptops, 7 servers, 2 sites, one technician (I'm the NM) and until recently I was teaching some 6th form courses. I'm also planning the ICT setup for our new PFI (Thank god not BSF) school which opens in Sept

I'm appalled by this thread, I hadn't realised schools paid so poorly for the people who keep the place running.

 

I work in one of the Schools of a University. Much of the infrastrucure (network, domain etc) is handled centrally so we deal with supporting users in our area and providing specific bits of infrastructure that just our area need.

 

The lowest paid member of our team in the School is on Grade 5 which is between £18-21k depending on how long you've been collecting annual increments. So I'm amazed at how little NMs with so much more responsibility are paid.

 

Compare ths job spec (not from my institution) with that of an NM Newcastle University: AV/IT Technician

 

I just don't know how schools can justify such poor pay.

On 25K here with 450 Workstations and 120 Laptops and 10 Servers with 1100 Students.

 

I think thats the same for all techies in my area.

so, I don't need to speak Spanish,

The computers (OS, keyboard etc) are also in English!

Hmm i'm a smidge jealous (well except for the teaching bit :-)) good luck mate. I'm learning Spanish at the moment and i have to say it's the most straight forward language i've tried so far so i think you should pick it up easily if you feel you want to give it a try.

I doubt its the holidays I would expect this to be the best time for upgrades/maintenance.

As backend software tends to be fairly cheap you can stay relatively upto date on the latest technology (which keeps it interesting) and you also get to decide what's happening and what direction you should take. You don't tend to get that level of freedom in most companies or a 6 week break to try your ideas :-)

There’s also the feeling that if you do your job well then you are helping make a difference, every penny saved can go on the students education rather than a companies books.

Partly the holidays - I'm term time only +2. The variety of things I get to play with, the non IT things I get to do, the kids, good friends etc.

I'm currently a IT technician at a large secondary school based in kent.

 

we have 1600+ pupils and 200+ teaching staff with 50+ Support staff.

We have over 900 student workstations, 50 staff workstations and 50+ student laptops with 200+ staff laptops. We run 9 servers, mostly 2k and 2k3 with an internet proxy and very confusing telephone system with over 200 phones. We have 43 HP Procurve switches across 15 cabinets all with fibre uplinks, and over 100 HP Access points over the site. 90% of our classrooms have Smart boards and projectors and we have 90 network printers.

 

We recently bought 115 new student workstations and 3 new servers and are migrating the entire network from RM CC3 to a standardised in-house windows 2k3 network over the 6 week summer :S. Alongside all of this we are refurbing 4 new IT rooms with ceiling, carpet, desking, paint, A/C and workstations also over the 6 weeks. Whilst also preparing to deploy our brand new frog VLE and school website.

 

There is one network manager

and two technicians

 

turning this on its head how much would pay us annually??

and would you say we need another member of staff?

Im on 14.5k pro rata down to about 12k supporting 250 pc's, 60 laptops, 10 servers, 15 iwbs, 40 printers, wireless, 700 pupils, 60 staff, 3 primary schools (another 100 machines and laptops), me an another tech who is on bit less than me.

 

Current job title is ict technician but have asked to be made network manager on bout 24k, i have hear that i am not going to get this but be made senior ict tech on about 13k as there is no money in the school.

 

However a member of staff was offered another job at a local school so he was offered more money and new job title to stay took it, other school then offered him more money so he was offered promotion and another pay rise here!!! So yeh there is no money!!! Said member of staff is now head of ICT and couldnt organise a pi55 up in a brewery when it comes to IT.

That does seem like a massive number of machines for three staff.

well 1300 physical workstations not that they all work... Myself and one of the other technicinans spend most of the day rebuilding broken workstations and laptops whilst also trying to juggle the standard user/level 1 replated problems.

 

We just about manage to do it, but its very stressful!

 

I thinks we do need another guy/gal really
