Student Username???

Hi all,

 

With regards to student usernames, I have been doing the same thing for 10 years and it probably the same for a number of years before that. At the moment we do first two letters of firstname and surname, but this has been causing issues for a while and since we started giving student email accounts and using ADConnect its been getting messy.

 

So I have playing with the idea of changing student usernames to intake year, surname and first two letter of first name to tidy up, so for instance 18BloggsJo. I was just wondering what others do with student usernames?

 

Staff are currently firstname.surname to match their email accounts.

We changed to Surname-First 2 letters of first name - Year of Entry to avoid duplicates so Joe Bloggs would be bloggsjo18. If on the rare occurrence there was a duplicate it adds their middle initial or 3rd letter of first name. Edited June 25, 2018 by Disease

Year of entry into year 7, surname 1^st initial: 18BloggsJ

 

In case of duplicates then 2^nd initial after 1^st: 18BloggsJA

We use intake year - Surname - initial. Eg. 18BloggsJ

 

If there are two with the same surname and initial then we use the second letter.

 

Eg. 18BloggsJo

Almost 10 years ago we were informed that having student names as usernames was a safeguarding risk, so ever since we have had the format intake year, Tutor, admission number, so for example, 18ABC3456.

I think ours is way over complicated, but too late to change it now.

 

We've got year of birth, first letter first name, first two letters of last name, day of month, and then month of birth. So they appear as 01jbl0212 if it was Joe Bloggs born on 02/12/01 for example. Can safetly say we've never had a duplicate though

We use admission number, initials (1234JB) for the same reason as Meldrew.

We just use their student number. The first 2 digits are year of entry and the remaining four a sequential number incremented when they are entered into the MIS system. For reasons that I can't fathom the 15's start at 0000, the 16's start at 2000, the 17's start at 4000 and the 18's start at 6000. I assume the 19's will start at 8000 and then we'll go around again. We don't assign student numbers.

We're the same as most with intake year and name, but in the format 18JoBloggs. (Makes for interesting usernames in primary though as we call it "The year they entered, or will enter, year 7" rather than "intake year" hence a year 2 pupil would be 23JoBloggs)

We seem more complex than most here:

 

(First initial) "." (Surname)(Year of Entry) T.Freeman18

 

Always been that way for us since we changed around 8 years ago from ST-FreemanT

 

Interested to hear where the safeguarding concerns stem from, i'd never thought about that but seems a valid point.

If that causes a duplicate then we make it up along the way

We use 4 digit year of entry to Y7, followed by surname and first initial

I inherited an awful format for Student usernames, which I wish we could change, but sadly there's no desire to do so at the time.

 

We use the first three letters of the surname followed by a random three digit number - so bon007 or hal900.

It most probably isn't. Just some jobsworth having their little power fix.

It was a recommendation from Becta that student usernames should not be their name, but that body has long since gone.

Yeah that's what I thought but I'd love to hear the argument for this..

First letters from each name and then a number that increments (so no duplicates), duplicates are the devil in identity management even more so when you throw AAD Connect into the mix.
