How many printers do you have?

We are looking at replacing our printer fleet we currently have 20 printers across the site and I really want to reduce this as I really do not think we need that many. At the moment I have reduced the number to 13 by looking at the printers in the closest proximity to each other and whether they could share 1 rather than each classroom/office needing 1 and using follow me printing.

 

Just wanted to ask in your schools how many printers do you have?

Thats what I am thinking we have 400 students and have 11 MFD and 8 desktop printers - way too much and way too expensive!!!!!

We have 47 with 2000 students. Most of these are in offices, with 1/3 in classrooms. 42 are Lexmark 748s so cartridge management isn't too bad.

 

A better question is how many printers do we really need. 10 maybe - the three MFDs we have in resources, one in art, one in graphics, two in the library, one for personnel (who we can't convince that pull print is confidential) and one at each end of the campus. If we did this, our printing costs would halve. At the last school I was at, they went from 50+ printers (with about 30 different models) to three - one upstairs, one downstairs and one for reception.

We had 97 printers iirc before Summer but these have been replaced with 8 pay-as-you-go desktops and 14 MFDs. Things are going much smoother.

Too many! We have 37 including 4 MFDs (plus a couple on USB that don't show in my list). Loads were installed into classrooms and offices so that people didn't have to walk 20 metres. I've been trying to slim this down, but it has been a painful process! At least I use Papercut to keep costs somewhere reasonable, but teachers sure do love to print - they'd rather spend their whole capitation on printing supplies for shonky old resources than anything actually engaging.

73 HP Laser Printers, 27 colour & 46 mono + ~ 10 MFD + in the print room a massive ricoh pro1107ex, a ricoh mp7001 & kyocera taskalfa 6052ci KX for 1500 pupils but the new head is pro reducing printing/printers so im sure this will go down.

We used to have 38, now we have 20. 7 x MFD's and the rest laser printers. 6 x of these are in ICT suites where it was thought that the inconvenience of students having to release print jobs would be disruptive. The remaining ones are all in SLT Offices where they refused to accept the inconvenience of leaving their office to collect printing. SLT leading by example...

 

If it were up to me we would have around 10 devices around school - 800 Students.

We have 48 laserjet desktop printers in a school with 800 students plus 4 MFDs way too many desktop printers!!!.... we will be going with a managed MFD system after our schools rebuild in 2 years time.....Only a couple of offices will have printers.

 

We use Papercut to restrict staff and students printing so not too much is printed and the budget is fairly rigid so very cost effective... we looking to run around 8 MFDs around the new school with biometric authentication....1 week to pick your work up or else its deleted automatically.......sweet, no piles of printed work left around the school.

We used to have around 100, now it's about 70, which is still too many. About 550 students 2-18.

Thanks for all the comments. I have sent through the proposal to the headteacher with reducing the printers from 20 to 12, with further reductions recommended to 10, if possible. He is really happy with the proposal and is going to discuss it with SLT.

Just going through the process right now on slimming down the fleet of printers from 50+ to MFD`s scattered around school.

I've got support from SLT to do this, its going to be a painful process though!, and I envisage a few confrontations with staff who don`t like the idea of walking 10 meters to the nearest printer.

Ill pray for you, if you pray for me. Ill be wearing Kevlar for the next 6 months once the proposal has gone through. I am sure ill get accused of making staff jobs harder by making them actually have to stand up and walk to the printer rather than being able to wheel their chair over to it.

Sell it as a positive move to help improve the fitness of staff - Why we should sit less

we have 5 MFDs dotted around. 2 MFD's in admin (fast one and a slow colour one) and A few desktops for SLT

 

I still get grief, usually on a daily basis

It's a good starter to look at why so many printers are needed. Do they not have enough textbooks'? Is there a problem with their projector being too dim? I hate printers.

Dear Staff, we have good news and good news. The good news is we're saving money with printers, so will have more for other things. The good news is we've added a free gym to the school corridors.

 

2 photocopiers at each site. A couple of old lasers around until they die

I have to say the slt are bad at leading in this type of thing in schools. I was chatting to the print management company and they say that chief constable of a police force was pictured having his printer removed and moving over to follow me. That never happens in schools. I will tell you how many we had when I remove all desktop printers. We have new photocopiers and managed printers coming soon.

I got rid of the printer in the IT office I full bought into the system. At least I am authentication using the system. Did have to block the teacher from two IT suites as they where using this to by pass the follow me.

8 classes for KS2 sharing a MFD in the computer suite room.

7 classes in KS1/FS sharing a MFD in the medical room.

One MFD in the main office and one in the headteachers office and Staffroom

 

Total: 5 MFDs and two desktop printers (senco and pastoral) Population 450 children.

We have 2 mahoosive MFDs in Repro and 18 other MFDs around the site.

 

A Mono & Colour MFD each in two communal areas for general printing,

1 Mono MFD in the main office

1 Mono MFD in the staffroom

1 Mono MFD in the sixth form

7 Mono MFDs in various computer rooms

4 Small Mono MFD in offices for very important folks (like us)

I'd love to be able to get rid of desktop printers and have a few MFDs dotted around, but it just isn't practical for us. There's nowhere physically suitable in our buildings to place MFDs, and having an MFD in one classroom that's used by several other classrooms would not really work from a classroom management perspective.

 

Added to that, staff offices are scattered all over the place.

 

We have around 80 desktop printers of various ages and levels of decay, and I'm looking at just having to replace like for like in most cases. Would love to be rid of printing altogether!
