How many printers do you have?

I'd love to be able to get rid of desktop printers and have a few MFDs dotted around, but it just isn't practical for us. There's nowhere physically suitable in our buildings to place MFDs, and having an MFD in one classroom that's used by several other classrooms would not really work from a classroom management perspective.

 

Added to that, staff offices are scattered all over the place.

 

We have around 80 desktop printers of various ages and levels of decay, and I'm looking at just having to replace like for like in most cases. Would love to be rid of printing altogether!

 

You don't need 80 printer that is just a lazy waste from staff. You must be able to put a printer in a classroom or and office to cover and area. I know that papercut can run on some desktop units with the right setup. Or just a couple of printers in the staff room.

 

We have follow me in most of the school and then in computer rooms we have printer that staff can't print to.

Yes it is, but you try and convince staff to walk outside of their office or classroom to collect a print. SMT need wield the big stick and reduce the number of printers (good luck with that). We have Papercut and pull-print, but you try and convince office staff that this is perfectly fine for confidential prints. Oh no, the printer must be in their office, otherwise somebody can see their print job.

Finding suitable physical locations for MFDs is a large part of the problem. There's no way they could sit in a lot of the smaller offices we have, but the only other spaces are often classrooms or corridors, neither of which would be suitable (lessons would be interrupted or MFDs would get trashed, drawn on, etc.). We therefore end up with desktop printers for most offices. Laziness doesn't really come into it in most cases, it's just the nature of our buildings.

Real question is why 90% of stuff is being printed at all, where are the digital portfolios, google classroom usage, etc?

Used to have one per classroom and then some more in offices etc!

 

We now have 1 desktop MFP per dept which works out about 8, 3 large MPF with stapler (staffroom in each building + a "dead" area of the building with no real printer etc in it apart from this one) and 1 120PPM mono in the print room

This, a million times. We got rid of all desktops and put some follow me MFDs in, then all of SMT wanted their desktops back because "we print confidential stuff", we dumbed it down enough when explaining the fact that's complete crap so they can only be using that as an excuse instead of "I don't want to walk to it and don't care about saving money". The bursar was the only member of SMT who didn't want a printer back (because she understood it was loads cheaper to use the MFDs). Once SMT had theirs back, the next layer of management down wanted theirs back too, our plan to save money by adding the MFDs probably actually increased costs once we put most of the desktops back in place.

 

I can't wait for most of these desktop printers to break, as when they do they will be told "find the money out of your own budget to buy the replacement", at which point they realise they have to pick between a printer and buying text books.

Not only that, but the amount that gets printed and abandoned there (abandoned despite them having to put a code in to release jobs) - or dumped in the bin because "i did it wrong" - is insane.

On Wednesday went around the school picking up left printouts/photocopies.

 

 

This is from one room.

 

I counted the sheets, worked out how much a ream of paper is and how much those printouts cost the school per print. The waste is costing the school over £10k a school year.

 

Complaints that there is no money, but when there's this sort of waste what do people expect.

We had 62 printers, 6 Photocopiers.

We now have 6 printers (Areas such as Head, Finance) + 8 Photocopiers operating follow me printing. The printers default to follow me if over 20 pages.

Students are given £1 worth of printing a week. HODs set a departmental budget for printing/copying which is set also.

Mostly I'm sad people don't move with tech faster, we need to work to make it even easier.

 

Need Google Photos for school work, import anything, photos, videos, documents, quickly scroll, search by date, or content, assign marks, notes etc

If there are no computers in the classroom, paper handouts seem reasonable. In a 1:1 school, that would be a different matter, or course, but there may still be occasions to use paper.

We have 12 MFDs dotted around School, would prefer less but the site/buildings dictate. Pull print queue. Previously we had over 100 desktop printers so something had to give!
