XiJ Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Had to move garden furniture into the garage after it scared the **** out me when the chair hit the (top half) of the window. And the kids 8 feet trampoline has physically moved across the garden. That's not particularly lightweight and has plenty of holes for the wind to pass through.
rad Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 - On my "normal" route home from work this has appeared today. My own sailing boat is fine, the boat next to mine has moved hitting mine... so need to check that later. My other half works at the sailing centre my boat is at.

VeryPC_Colin_M Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 All of the top brass of VeryPC have parked their cars behind the building today and not in their allocated parking spaces in front of the building.. A couple of the neighbours on the business park are notorious for not tying their large bins down and they didn't want to risk any dents.. 1
6Foot2 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 When did we start naming the storms over here? I don't remember any being given names when I was a kid. Link: Storm names - UK storm names - RandomNames.com
Ashfold Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 We lost tree today and the caretaker has been running round the surrounding area looking for a flying trampoline.
dry Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Plenty of wheelie bins on the roads (today is bin day for a lot of people in the area) which makes my normal cycle route a bit more exciting! We had an ambulance on site when I came back from lunch. I was imagining a kid being blown away in a strong gust but the rumour mill says it was just a sports injury. Other than that, a loose cable was blown off the roof (old redundant boiler cable installed by the council many years ago) but not much other damage.
6Foot2 Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Several trees down on the way home, but traffic was light so no great issues. Hope everyone else gets home OK too.

MatthewL Posted February 23, 2017 Posted February 23, 2017 Along the Humber has been interesting out on the road today, I live on the coast and its picked up this afternoon quite a bit. Recycling boxes, had them down the street the other morning, I refuse to put mine out when its windy they end up going down the street, actually got a complaint in about this as I want a wheelie bin for my plastics rather then a pidly box!

It had my full wheelie bin off down the street 3 times today - had to wedge it in position with heavy planters...
hardtailstar Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 No damage in my area on my 20 mile bike ride last night. There was only a few twigs in the roads and that was about it.
mikeprice Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Had a knock at the door last night - one of the neighbours has spotted that a tree at the end of the cul-de-sac is leaning at an extreme angle and hed was just telling everyone to move their cars and be careful (he is a nice bloke) unfortunately the tree is in a garden of another road and the bloke who lived there died recently - so the house is unoccupied neighbour is going to ring the council this morning to see what they can do apparently a small tree blew down on the road parallel to ours as well oh - and it was bin day - so most of the road's bins ended up by my house - fortunately AFTER they were emptied this morning the tree is still there
AMLinington Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Interesting happenings on my journey home from work last night. Took the Itchen Toll Bridge out of Southampton (it saves me 10 minutes) and the traffic was backed right up and crawling. So I think 'Maybe a tree has fallen' or something. So I sit in it for 30 minutes until I see weird manoeuvres happening ahead of me... Cars are pulling up onto the OPPOSITE pavement, and the bus several cars in front of me nearly scraped someones wall. Turns out, somehow, that someones car brakes had failed and their car had rolled out into the middle of the road from the side road it was parked in. The closer I got, the further out into the road the car was - at first it wasn't blocking the whole lane. By the time I got past it, it was nearly across both lanes! Not sure if storm related or just happenstance but it was pretty bizarre to see this car just rolling around on its own...

It's easy to do, especially with the push button system in some cars (like our Volvo). Daughter works in a filling station and it's happened twice since Christmas on her shifts. Cars rolling away from the pumps while the owner is paying at the kiosk.
abillybob Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Last night a big tree came down on the main road back from work and on a country lane, police where there for traffic management so it was no biggy. Power was out for 3 hours yesterday in my village. This morning what is normally a 40 minute drive was an hour as 3 road where fully closed, went down some weird back lanes I never knew existed, problem is it's normally a main road so down this small country lane you had huge lorries coming toward you all the time which took half an hour (exaggeration) to get past. I was worried last night as we live meters away from a big forest and a couple of the trees there can easily hit my house, luckily none of them fell.

Know what you mean - there are a load of trees at the bottom of my garden that I was looking at all yesterday afternoon and evening all still vertical thankfully

Not sure if storm related or just happenstance but it was pretty bizarre to see this car just rolling around on its own...It's quite a common occurrence as brake discs get hot which causes them to expand so when you put you parking brake on it grips the expanded disc which as it cools contracts meaning the parking brake is less effective. I used to see it fairly often when I lived on a hill, I'd come out in the morning to find cars nudging each other because the parking brake wasn't pulled enough.
unixman_again Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 No trains running last night on my journey home - had to go on the bus. Train takes 25 mins, bus took 60 mins but normally takes 90. I'm glad I left early and I'm glad it's half term. Trains OK today, but I declaring POETS day.
korifugi Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) I had to stay home yesterday for a broadband installation - but when I got in this morning I jokingly said to my colleagues "We've still got a roof, then". Judging by the emails and my colleagues words - we very almost didn't on one of the buildings, as it appeared to be attempting to go into the grounds of the school next door. Now, I remember (waay back in the mists of time when I was younger), having to knock on a neighbor's door to get the ball back - can't imagine trying it for a roof. My own back garden fence didn't fare too well either though - as the panels are all laying down in my garden. Should be a quick job to slot them all back inbetween the concrete posts though, now Doris has passed. Edited February 24, 2017 by korifugi missing an "n"
Boredguy Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 When we had the high winds back in the late 80's they added loads of metal into our gym roof to keep it from being blown away... shame as it would have meant a new sports hall instead of having to wait another 30 years. So far our total damage on site has been a couple of door hinges.

Depending on the gradient of the hill, I usually park in gear if I'm on a slope - reverse for a downhill and first for an uphill. I'm sure it probably isn't healthy for the gearbox, but my car clonking someone else's isn't healthy for my bank balance. I don't park on hills that often though so it's only an occasional thing.

howartp Posted February 24, 2017 Posted February 24, 2017 Depending on the gradient of the hill, I usually park in gear if I'm on a slope - reverse for a downhill and first for an uphill Is there a definition How does one define a hill as uphill or downhill?

I'm sure it probably isn't healthy for the gearbox I've been taught this. Can't see much of a problem so long as the handbrake is applied before putting it in gear- so that the strain is still on the handbrake but being in gear acts as a failsafe. Happy to be corrected though!
