You'd hope so.. But it's often who shouts the loudest that gets listened to, not who makes the most sense. And the professionally offended are reeeeaaally good at making lots of noise.

But again, as I said, I'll give her the same chance I gave Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi. And I genuinely do hope that she's been chosen for the right reasons. I'd much rather be pleasantly surprised than smugly get to say 'I told you so!'. I don't want to see 'a woman Doctor', I just want more 'great Doctors' and if she can do that, she gets a thumbs up from me. And it ain't anything to do with sex to say that 'cause I said pretty much the same thing about Smith when he popped up :p

I'm glad that the 50% of kids who weren't represented for the past 50 years get the very start of seeing themselves as the lead of their favourite show.

Hopefully the next regeneration will be played by an Asian woman, according to uk demographics that's 7%, so 1 in 14, about time. And then a black woman, 5%, and then a ginger woman.

Next question is: When will be see any male daleks? Without bumps.

I don't mean just here on Edugeek, it's mainly people writing stupid comments on Social media.....

Also i still think it shouldn't matter why they chose a woman anyway! It shouldn't be a talking point in this day and age...

And it won't be once another 12 female actors have played The Doctor

...when he popped up...

Did someone mention Doctor Who and pop up?

[OK, David Tennant, not Matt Smith and he isn't really 'popping up']

Point taken :)

I do see what you're saying, and on paper I agree with the concept. My reservations aren't 'because she's a woman'. I mean, I guess technically they are, but her sex isn't the issue here.

Let's hark back to ICTDirect_Dave's (hopefully) tongue-in-cheek post about The Doctor being played by Ed Sheeran. I'd still be asking "Is this the best person for the job, or is it just because he's crazy popular right now?"

I ask the same about Jodie Whittaker in the same capacity.. Is she the best person for the job, can she play the Doctor best as per the script, or are sacrifices to the quality of the show being made in order to appease the vocally aggressive feminist crowd? And the feminist crowd have been very vocal about Doctor Who (as with most TV shows tbh) in the past. Sometimes, I feel, justifiably. Sometimes not. Bill was a wonderful step in the right direction and I didn't feel like they made her being a lesbian a core tenet of her character, she was a bloody good companion that just happened to like women.

I would have thought all Daleks were male (OMG SEXISM!!11!1!1eleventy) and a female Dalek would have concave shell detail rather than convex :getmecoat:

Technically there have been transgender Daleks.... in ' The Parting of ways' the Daleks were reborn from mushed down humans, so would of taken parts from men and women alike!

"We waited here in the dark space, damaged but rebuilding. Centuries passed and we quietly infiltrated the systems of Earth, harvesting the waste of humanity: the prisoners, the refugees, the dispossessed; they all came to us. The bodies were filleted, pulped, sifted. The seed of the human race is perverted. Only one cell in a billion was fit to be nurtured."

That's not a doctor, that's a white mage.

Oh so now we're going to be sexist and racist about the new Doctor? :getmecoat:

to look at things a bit differently - how do we know that the doctors we have seen have been male

they appear male to us as they look like male humans - but it may work differently for Time Lords

of course I only watch Dr Who - I don't study it - so I may have missed some 'important' intellectual points that have been answered in previous episode while I was just watching the plot

oh - and are female Time Lords still called Time Lords???

Depending on what your source information is (TV, Books, etc), but they have been known to be called Time Ladies and Time Lords. Just like the word mankind covers men and women, and the House of Lords covers Lords and Ladies.

Of course that's just a translation into our primitive human language.

@DJ-1701 's new avatar is confusing me - I thought I had worked out the rules and he/she/it goes and changes things

DOCTOR: She was my first friend, always so brilliant, from the first day at the Academy. So fast, so funny. She was my man crush.

BILL: I'm sorry?

DOCTOR: Yeah, I think she was a man back then. I'm fairly sure that I was, too. It was a long time ago, though.

BILL: So, the Time Lords, bit flexible on the whole man-woman thing, then, yeah?

DOCTOR: We're the most civilised civilisation in the universe. We're billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.

BILL: But you still call yourselves Time Lords?

DOCTOR: Yeah. Shut up.

BILL: Okay.
