If the female role is rooted in feminism-pandering, then I can see the doctor not being allowed to be written as irrational, vulnerable, or broken (which we've had in spades from the male leads) just in case it's seen as portraying women as weak.

If the female role isn't pandering, then I hope we get some of those scenes, because those have the potential to be defining, outstanding moments for each Doctor, and I love them.

You're confusing two things, possibly on purpose.

 

There was no outrage at Wonder Woman's lack of armpit hair. You can easily tell that because it's stupid.

 

There was outrage about a lack of female main characters, you can easily tell that because it makes sense.

No there wasn't, that was 4 people on twitter complaining, that's my entire point, thanks for proving it. Then newspapers picked it up to cause outrage, because that gets clicks and they're all poor now so they can't report proper news, even if that's what their readers would want, which is isn't, because they're The Express

This is precisely why I don't want third-wave feminism hamstringing my TV programs.

I'm all for gender equality, but third-wave feminism is just as draconian as the supposed patriarchy.

 

But like I've said, I'll give her a chance, as I've done with all the other Doctors. I've been pleasantly surprised each time, the directors seem to know what they're doing, so I'm not going to just assume this is the BBC pandering.

The wage-gap statistics are the aggregated averages across all careers, all working hours and all breaks from the workforce. It is the average all women make against the average all men make.

Paying a man and a woman a different salary/wage for the same work is illegal (gratis, Second-wave Feminism). Companies that do it get in a lot of trouble.

Now that companies are starting to actually pay men better for paternity leave, we're seeing a lot less women leave the workforce when they have a child and more men becoming full-time parents. Up until relatively recently this just wasn't possible because men got nowhere near as gracious paternity benefits as women did.

 

It would be interesting to see Whittaker's salary vs Capaldi's though

I think you got the wrong link, that's not what it says. Can't find hair or wage in that article.

 

The adjusted wage gap of course depends on what country you're in, hard to get worldwide figures so there's a lot of US bias, eg for US in 2009

Go take a look at the mess that Marvel comics is in right now. Manga pretty much stole all of their business because they ignore the moral outrage and give their customers what they want.

 

The same will happen to Dr Who. They are already beside themselves with glee that they have Dr Who and their fanboys on the hook. Just go read the Guardian Comments section. Anyone who disagrees with DR Who being a woman is instantly branded an evil Mysoginist who hates women.

4 people complaining is not a trend, the trend is the news reporting on 4 people complaining to create anger.

 

Seems like Marvel comics has about 1/3rd market share, DC another 1/3rd, leaving 1/3rd to everyone else. Plus I doubt they care when they're making billions from their films.

If this is the case then their opinion really holds no influence. If they really aren't fans, they could be, perhaps, expressing an opinion with the hope of harming the profile of the show.

 

All of that aside one constant about Doctor Who is how much it changes. Changing the gender of The Doctor is just another one of those changes. It's really not a big deal: If your lead character can thwart death by regenerating, then changing sex from one to another should be a relatively simple problem.

You'd hope so.. But it's often who shouts the loudest that gets listened to, not who makes the most sense. And the professionally offended are reeeeaaally good at making lots of noise.

 

But again, as I said, I'll give her the same chance I gave Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi. And I genuinely do hope that she's been chosen for the right reasons. I'd much rather be pleasantly surprised than smugly get to say 'I told you so!'. I don't want to see 'a woman Doctor', I just want more 'great Doctors' and if she can do that, she gets a thumbs up from me. And it ain't anything to do with sex to say that 'cause I said pretty much the same thing about Smith when he popped up

I don't mean just here on Edugeek, it's mainly people writing stupid comments on Social media.....

 

Also i still think it shouldn't matter why they chose a woman anyway! It shouldn't be a talking point in this day and age...
