Trapper Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Hi Folks, Anyone have recommendations for rugged memory sticks? Basically to keep on your keys, the big problem I've had is the "loop" which you push a ring through to clip onto your keys tends to break quite easily. I've been using cable ties as I have problems getting the metal hoops into some of the tiny holes on some USB sticks that are supposed to be used, but the plastic rubbing on plastic tends to effectively saw through one side or the other quickly. I used to have the Corsair Voyager's back in the day (back in the 1GB day!) and they survived a lot of punishment. Down to several wash/dry cycles, so I'm looking at this model: https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/USB-Flash-Drives/Corsair-High-Speed-Flash-Drive/B00HR7HB1U/ref=pd_bxgy_147_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&refRID=7EMF8D6B3NG804QB3ZFC&th=1 Before I go ahead does anyone else have a better go-to memory stick for this kind of use? Lot's of keys jangling around, slapping on desks etc.
FN-GM Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 These are good. But they might be a bit bulky! - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-CMFSS3B-64GB-Survivor-Stealth-Rugged/dp/B00YHL1LN8/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1485795191&sr=1-1&keywords=Corsair+Flash+Survivor
Trapper Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 How about this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Corsair-Flash-Survivor-Drive-CMFSV3B-64GB/dp/B00YHL1LN8/?tag=geo01-21&ascsubtag=03ce221e7920ea499eef0e481d7de96d154da381&rawdata=%5Br%7Chttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.co.uk%2F%5Bt%7Clink%5Bp%7C1733112413%5Ba%7CB00YP5Y20K%5Bau%7C5716553178370339807%5Bb%7Clifehacker&th=1 Hah! Snap!
jmak Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I use these: https://www.kingston.com/en/usb/personal_business/dtse9g2 Completely metal body with a hole that's about 10mm diameter - plenty big enough to go on a key ring. 1
LeMarchand Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) I bought a pack of assorted small washers from Poundland and use a tiny one + a medium one for USB key attachment. I tend to wear mine like IT dog tags, but the ones @VeryPC put their drivers on (small aluminium ones with a 1cm "hole") seem like they'd survive a pocket. They probably sell them as well... Beaten to it! This sort: I use these: https://www.kingston.com/en/usb/personal_business/dtse9g2 Completely metal body with a hole that's about 10mm diameter - plenty big enough to go on a key ring. jmak Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 I had one of those, died within a month in my pocket I mostly wear my collection hanging from my Edugeek lanyard round my neck.... I've had some for several years now - including a couple kindly donated by very-pc [emoji3] Maybe they're not Dalek compatible....
Trapper Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 Washer idea is fantastic! Very British bloke in his shed stroking his beard idea. I like it!

If the hole is too small to go on a keyring?

MatthewL Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Another one for the Kingston ones. Got mine on my keys to I don't loose it and it gets hammered daily and never had an issue.

If the hole is too small to go on a keyring? Sorry - should've said split rings but basically: tiny one goes through USB key, then larger one/s to go on keyring. 1
witch Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Kingston here too. On my keyring - never had a problem

Rob_D Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 I've used the corsair voyagers (8gb ones) for 12 years or so now. They've been through the wash at least twice, one had it's connector bent over, and they still give me way better copy speeds than the kingston ones I had.
AJWhite1970 Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 +1 for the Kingston metal ones. I have 4x16Gb ones on my car/office keys and they have survived some serious abuse over the years. Occasionally I have to just straighten out the thin bit of the USB end as it gets a bit buckled in my pocket but never (until about 10 mins time...) yet had one fail Andrew

Being using these for years. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-Technology-Traveler-Flash-Casing/dp/B00IRD6PMY Edited January 31, 2017 by Davit2005
IrritableTech Posted January 31, 2017 Posted January 31, 2017 Ordered this yesterday. I'll have to get back to you about it's ruggedness.
arwen Posted February 1, 2017 Posted February 1, 2017 I use these Dell ones through work (we got them free...) 16GB DELL USB 100 Series-Blue : Dell Memory | Dell UK Mine is attached to my ID cards (which are constantly in and out of my back pocket). It's been through the wash many times, I accidentally drove over it, got it stuck in the runner of my car seat and been dropped countless times. Still works with no issues. The all metal Kingston ones might be less prone to the plastic snapping. But mine still looks relatively new!
LeMarchand Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Saw these on HDUK today, vbox5 for a bit more off. Seems like a good deal. https://www.mymemory.co.uk/USB-Flash-Drives/Samsung/Samsung-128GB-Bar-USB-3.0-Flash-Drive---130MB_s
Gibbo Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 I have a metal 4Gb Kingston one, back when 4Gb was the biggest you can get. Its heavily scratched but still works perfect. The only drawback is it needs a blow to get rid of pocket dust!
AJWhite1970 Posted February 8, 2017 Posted February 8, 2017 My trusty Kingston keys, 4 x 16gb with various software and files on them. They take a terrible battering and keep working, can also confirm they are waterproof and shockproof...
