Standard server room temperature.

We have virtual infrastructure in place.

We have the following

1) SAN ,

2) Three host

3)1 Backup server

4)6 switches

5)Telephone EAPBX

 

Please can you let me know what temperature need to be maintained.

Our Server Room air-con is set at 20 degrees.

18 degrees is excessively cold imo. 20-22 is about right.

Mine is set to 19c.

We've got ours set at 19 degrees.

 

It depends on how many server racks you've got as in the 'olden day' everyone just concentrated on chilling the room whereas large server rooms with a few racks have cold spots and hotspots as air flow is just as important as temperature and by having hot and cold spots you cause the air to move around and moving air is cooler than air that is sitting still.

It's not just temperature, you need to look at humidity too. In general 20-23c and between 40-55% relative humidity is the best for a datacenter/server room.

Monitor the temps inside the machines, as long as they're not going out of spec, use whatever uses the least energy

Mine has a range of 20-22C because I also work in there.

 

I blank out all the fan noise, right up until someone comes in and mentions it.

21-23c depending on the room and where it is and the kit in the room, where possible we try and get 2 units in each room for resiliency a well so in our London office we have 2x 30,000BTU units we can run on one of them with careful monitoring of the environment whilst the other is repaired, in smaller locations the load is still split where possible over 2 units to give again some level of resiliency as we are usually stuck in the basement or sub-basement so cannot say open a window for a temp unit etc..

18c air con. Servers register between 16-19c on intake. Out is showing 26-30 during the day using a probe.

Ours are all set to 22C but we monitor it and get email alerts if it ver gets to 25C (which normally only happens when estates turn off the circuit the AC runs off of to work on other things without telling us)

As mentioned earlier , humidity is also a concern, if it gets to dry then you can get static build up.

UPS Load ( we have some client sockets on the UPS, we recently saw a 10KVA increase in draw on these, I knew exactly the cause)

Floor level moisture.

And some other stuff.

 

Cooling is all N+1, at one point we were loosing one out of our 4 coolers and could still achieve +1. I think we have actually reduced our thermal load since then too.

 

 

I remember at my old job, we converted an old store room to be the Server room. But after growing from 5-6 Servers to 10+ it was overheating. We installed our own A/C , but the "KIT" had restricted length pipework and the Condenser unit had to be situated in another store room. It worked well enough even in the middle of summer, until the Head complained his office floor was red hot . New Pro AC ordered
