How to print from Ipad to windows print server

I have purchased a iPad for a one of the staff and the staff have asked if it is possible to print from the iPad. We don't have any apple server in our network and our print server is windows 2008

What printers do you have? As it's only one user, most of the major printer manufacturers have print apps for IOS could you just bypass your windows network altogether and just print to an IP?

We have paper cut print management software and it monitors the printer credits and not sure how this is going to work.

Seriously though, as Oaktech said, check for apps from the manufacturers, or check for email to print solutions.

We too have PaperCut. If students and staff want to print from their own devices (including iPads) they go to the PaperCut web login page and select web print, select the printer and upload the file. No drivers to install, although only accepts certain file types.

IME that doesn't work with iPads (last tested a few months ago, PaperCut 15.1) for anything but photos because you can't readily browse for the file you want (unless something's changed in the interim). It works for non-iOS stuff.

I've just tested PaperCut WebPrint from an iPad, it gives you the option to select a file from iCloud or OneDrive (if you've got the App installed), but yes before this it wasn't ideal for printing documents.

At home I have CUPS setup with

avahi-discover .

 

 

The ipad probably sends broadcast traffic looking for the server.

 

 

You've also got the security consideration of having a wifi device connecting to one of your servers.Which I'm guessing is mission critical.

If you have PaperCut you can install a secondary sever (of PaperCut) and publish printers including the follow me queue and get your Mac server to broadcast this and print from your Apple device.

We use two methods, a mobile print setup where you email the document from the iPad (or other device) to the print servers and a portal where you goto a web page, select the file and submit it for printing.

Just have to go and collect from the printer (all users have to enter a pin to get their print outs)

Presto by collobos. For a about $20 a year it will advertise itself as an AirPrint receiver and allow prints to go through to your normal printers.

Doesn't work with on-board authentication though but will work with paper cut.

We just use the functionality of Bonjour to print to our MFP's. We have Ricoh MFP's so they download the Ricoh printing app and input their username and pin (which tracks their printing) this way there is always a log on the printers as to how much staff are printing whether from pc's, laptops or ipads.

 

and they can't access anything else besides printing on the network from the ipads either, so security wise we are fine

Paper cut allows for BYOD support - including printing via email. Many apps support share via email - will this work for you?
