I regretted selling the Previous 3.0 V6 S-Type so much that it's replacement ( A BMW E61 530D ) only lasted 8 months before I had to have a S-Type again. Even though it killed it's engine I still love it. Hence I can be botherd to fix rather than replace. TT

Insurance shot up when I moved house so had to get rid. Got a Ford Galaxy now 1.9 TDI HAHAHA
arwen Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 I forgot to post on here when I picked it up! New Car in funky/weird colour - Must say, I am very pleased with it. Done around 1k miles since I picked it up and I'm averaging 43mpg, which is what I was getting from the little clio on similar journeys. The 150hp is certainly a nice upgrade over the 75ish of the clio, and it is so comfortable and effortless to drive. But is pretty happy at getting thrown into corners too! A nice amount of tech in the car, probably the favourite being dual zone climate control. The voice controls are an amusing gimmick, but I am surprised it can understand my accent most of the time! The wheels need a little attention/refurb, but I'm thinking of getting them redone in a dark grey colour. Currently playing around with pictures to see what would look best. Also had some fun with the snow foam attachment I bought for the pressure washer the other week. I am now really looking forward to a reasonable day where I can give the car a proper clean!

Done a shade under 3K since buying her in october to stand in for the Jag whilst sorting it's engine. Spent a bit on it in in that time, ~£130 (hub,caliper,window winder,gasket, damaged tyre) ... And fitted an ST 170 interior for £90 . Left the wife to take it for MOT. Found it back outside the house when I got home... £40 for the MOT and £0 on repairs.. 13 Months to the next MOT If need be. TT
3s-gtech Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 The mk1 Focus is a cracking car. So, so cheap now, an ST170 went through the local auction sub £300 last week. They're a great steer, though the TDCi likes to eat DMFs due to its torque. Would have another.

The 1.2 Fiesta I got when the kids were learning to drive is no replacement. When the Fiesta goes I want something as good as my Focus again
newpersn Posted April 15, 2016 Posted April 15, 2016 Picked up a cheap Mondeo diesel few months to replace its petrol version. Here is the petrol.. 2002 2.0 petrol zetec estate. Nothing special. Spent 200 to to have the thermostat and other work done. Wasn't even getting 25mpg. So it had to go. Sold it for more for what I paid for it . (Did have for 5/6 months) So I brought this 2003 2.0 tdci 115 LX spec estate. (Bottom of the range. But got cruse control and 6 speed box.) Dirt cheep to run. Carry the kids and dog around great
3s-gtech Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 Good car. I *think* it's the 130bhp model that has a nasty reputation for killing injection pumps, not 100% on whether it's all models of that engine. If looked after should give you years of service otherwise.

If looked after should give you years of service otherwise. Both me and the partner said if it last 18/24 months then it has done us well. Plus it give us chance to pay off some debts aswell. We also got a 2009 Renault Laguna 2.0 dci. Which is lovely to drive Once I win the lottery I would like a Ford Sierra or a RS2000. But if I don't I will have a newer mondeo estate.

Nice car, but total money pit. ~1K on engine/fly related issues in 8 Months. I had a BMW E61 530D ... OK car, total money pit. again ~1200 in issues in 8 Months. Modern High pressure, high torque deisels just don't last. The only oil burner that I have had that was bullet proof was a 18 year old Passat 1.9TDI.. That refused to die! TT

Modern diesels are okay, if your usage works with them. Short journeys, stop-start traffic, pootling along etc all shorten their lives.

Years ago people would scrap a car if the clutch was gone after 100k miles. Now we just get them replaced and off we go again for another 100k miles.
twin--turbo Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 My Money Pit Mondeo had a Full Service History when I got it at 82K, It still had one after 92K and a bucket load of cash on faults. So looking after it made no difference. Same goes for my Jag, full service history, at least £7K spent between 18/5/05 and 23/10/14 ( the receipts I have ) . I did a full oil change with Magnatec and genuine filter 2K before the engine died ( bad luck ? ) Now the focus has a years MOT I will give it an oil change though.. At the very least the 1.8 Zetec is of use to me for my kit car so got to look after that. TT
newpersn Posted April 16, 2016 Posted April 16, 2016 Should add. Before we moved I used to do 80miles aday back and forth to work plus I did delivery work on the weekends. Here some of the cars I've had.... Renault Laguna mk2 1.9 dci. Brought with 88k sold it with 155k in 2 and a half years. This car had must of the money spent (rear springs, turbo, gearbox and flywheel). Never missed the best. My partner drove this 99% time. I had 306 non turbo diesel. Great car. Dirt cheep. Battered body work lasted 6 months due to rust underneath. 2001 Clio 1.2 sport. Great cheep car. Did over 40mpg. Had problem with its coil pack but didn't change it and still going strong as I still see it around. After I sold the Laguna I brought a mk4 Astra 1.7 CDTi and had that for about 18months before I had problems with the engine. Broke down coming home from work during the winter. Managed to fix it and sold it on. So sat on my drive way now. Is the mondeo mk3 estate and mk3 Laguna 2.0 dci (my partner drives that.)
twin--turbo Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 After a few weeks of slowly taking my Jag's engine out ( did not want to rush and get dishatrend ) Today was the day for the replacement 4.0 V8 to go in... after getting everything preped in advance, cleaning the bay, cleaning threads, ensuring all nut's and bolts were free.. It took from ~11:30 to get the engine from the trolly on the floor to ~4PM and the stage where I could start her up. Sounded very loud with no exhuast .... Just got that and the rads to refit Picking up a spare parts S-Type tomorrow for £200, it's a nice looking example will be a shame to break it up... TT

I've only had a quick look at these but the prices are very tempting........ 1
