Suicide Bombing Super Mutants are your greatest weapon. I once took out 4 super mutants (including the bomber) with a single shot. Hit the right spot and BOOM.

Shotguns need some attention paid to their accuracy and range when modding to be effective. Too large a spread and you have to be right up in their face to do decent damage.

I never used the Laser Musket past about level 7-8 ish though. I have never run short of .308 ammo and can do more damage from greater range with my sniper. Just hit lvl 17 last night, it was another late one... oops

Hmmm... just been reading through a few of these posts and it's making me think that I'm Doin' It Rong.

First time fallout player. I have played skyrim, but I'm noticing that this is slightly different!

I go to do stuff (like go to a place where there are the horrible fast zombie things) but I always keep dying on the way. Last night I died because of these radioactive scorpion things. It makes me think I'm rubbish at the game, but maybe I need to get a better companion and equip them up something rotten.... hmmm...

Sounds like you're going out of the way into the more "high level" area's. If i remember correctly you get a mission to go help a farm quite early on which is quite a ways to the right of the map. I was low level when i attempted that and got killed by Giant Radscorpions on the way. Ended up doing some easier stuff beforehandand going back to it at a later time.

Radscorptions, so I hear*, will eff-your-ess up even more than Deathclaws in Fallout 4.

* I've had the good fortune to not encounter one yet. Mirelurks are bad enough.

It all depends on how you roll your character really, and how you equip yourself. I don't rely very much on companions, they get in the way more often than not! I prefer staying a distance away, hidden behind something and shooting targets in the head. If I must get up close, I will go with the power armor, and smack em with a sledgehammer or something.

The dog is useful for finding enemies before they attack you - so you should be able to prepare yourself when your dog warns you.

Also, the map is progressively more difficult top left to bottom right I believe!

Yeah that's the mission I'm attempting. I will abandon this mish and do summink else!! You would think it wouldn't activate until you reached a certain level. I'm only level 9 :(

Could be worse. trekking from sort of top-middle of the map to a settlement in the top-leftish.. Pass a small one-room caravan-like thing. Sentry turret takes a bit of an exception to my presence. No issue. Pew pew. Asplode. Job done.

CRANK WHIRR BEEP CLUNK ZAPZAP PEW PEW PEW SLOW DEATH MUSIC

Some huge deathbot decides to wake up and put a stop to my errant vandalism. I did not survive.

All of the fallout games are somewhat unforgiving to the uninitiated but fallout 4 seems to place the player with much more accessible avenues towards their premature death.

I've noticed that in general, the game is more forgiving to the North and much nastier to the south, particularly the South-East. Last night I barely survived a fight with a deathclaw only for another to show up just as I was breathing my sigh of relief. Try to pick up the perk that will tell you an enemy's weaknesses/resistances while in VATs (I think it's in Perception). It will help you pick the right weapon (ballistic, energy, runthehellaway).

I think the nastiest enemy I've encountered was a mutated legendary synth. It took a pounding, was nearly dead then mutated (full heal), hits like a truck (basically would 1-shot me with a melee hit) and chased me relentlessly. When I finally downed it, I ran over to it's corpse to loot and BEWM... atomic explosion. It turns out than when they drop, you need to run like hell or you're toast! Lots of fun finding that out though!

Anyone find dogmeat is a bit of a pain if you are trying to play stealthy? More than once I have not been detected but the dog has run off and got in a fight with something. I would leave him at home but he looks so awesome in his red scarf and goggles that he has to come with me (plus I need something to help carry all the junk I collect).

I spent 2 hours trying to do an easy quest last night, just could not find the guy I needed to kill. Handed the controller to the Mrs to have a look round and she found the way in about 5 minutes.... even worse it was an elevator that I had gone past saying "I will come back to that once I have checked the rest of this floor"..

I did manage to build my first semi decent sniper rifle though which was awesome and I stole a set of raider power armor complete with the frame :)

If you crouch, he does too, and goes all sneaky beaky like.

@Tesla imgur is blocked here (for good reason, really...) - is that the clip of Dogmeat tripping all the wall-mounted laser mines? lol

In theory that is what he was supposed to do. In practice I'm [Hidden] while there is a bunch of feral ghouls and raiders fighting it out among themselves. Next thing I know all of them are attacking the dog (I'm still showing as hidden) and one of the raiders with a fatman wipes us both out.

That GIF is very funny. My Mrs didn't like it because I kept using the dog to clear out landmines last night :)

The only issue i have with dogmeat while going sneaky sniper is when you line up a headshot and he drags them to the ground just as you fire.

I had a funny moment last night, I was off to take down a raider camp with Piper, I was wearing the Drifter outfit and came across the corpse of a dead guy wearing the same outfit, I thought cool now me and Piper can wear the same thing and look bad ass together, in the midst of changing her outfit a pack of feral dogs start attacking us, so I come out of the Trade screen and start shooting, a couple of seconds later I see Piper taking the dogs down all while running around in her underwear.

lol I'd tried to make her naked already but couldn't, she'd always revert back to her original outfit (even if it wasn't in her inventory) it must have been a glitch that resulted in the nakedness.

Surely that's the first port of call with any game where you can control outfits?

Erm... the game pauses while you're trading with a companion! Definitely a case of deliberatenerdynakeditis!
