I don't use it. My options are:

A) Look away from the screen and faff with the app. The game isn't paused, so I'm getting shot whilst I do this.

B) Press tap and bring up my pip boy. Swap weapons. Stab self with stimpacks. Lower pip boy. Resume game. Not getting shot at whilst I do this..

It's a no-brainer, really.

I just use the hotkeys.. if you're firing, stimpacks don't do the animations so I can just press "0" and instantly heal (or go to my inventory and drink/eat).

Starting a new playthrough as a sneaky female character. I'm bored to bits of my overpowered main character!

Interesting. I just have the iPad below my main screen, so I don't have to look away particularly - just like if I were driving a car, I can glance at it etc...

Ah, yes, but you don't have to interface with your speedo, you just look at it and then back to the rode.

With the pip boy app you gotta faff around pressing buttons, flicking through categories, etc, all whilst a gang of mirelurks are giving you a few extra orifices.

Playing on a console sitting on a sofa so its more of a pain to use the App then just hit B in game. Now have 8 suits of power armor, Level 25, sanctuary is at 95% happiness and have 4 other settlements I'm building up with over 60 hours played and I still haven't started the second quest in the main quest line.

There are too many distractions in this game, I will never complete it.

Hear hear. I can find myself walking to a destination for something, I'll notice a map marker on the compass that I haven't yet discovered so I think "Ooh let's have a quick look" - before I know it I'm knee deep in Raider ambushes and a "quick look" turns into another half hour of clearing a factory and looting every single junk item.

I must say this game really does change the way you loot. In 3 or New Vegas I would never even dream of dropping guns or armour to keep hold of junk! Although I must confess I do treat poor Dogmeat as a Pack Brahmin... #sorrynotsorry - what are all your strategies for perk management, do you just pick random ones or go through a specific order?

I always forget that companions have inventories D: Though, I did give Dogmeat some metal armour, a muzzle and a black skull bandanna :p

Gun nut. Science. Hacking. Lockpicking. Get these as soon as possible as they're the most important.

I haven't put any points into sneak yet, which I usually do, but admittedly that's because it's a perk now and not a skill. Sneak is usually one of the first I max in previous games, but I find it's less important than other abilities right now.

I also have Black Widow, because useful, and a perk that lets me get better items from scrapping guns (though it's not particularly useful just yet, I expect it will be when I hit the higher levels)

Some things you may not need depending on your companion, in the end I hardly put any points into Lockpicking since Cait can pick up to Master locks.. I believe Mr. Synth Investigator is good with hacking too.

Maybe. But I like Dogmeat and being self-sufficient :) Nice that they've made companions a bit more useful. New Vegas did a decent enough job, but having companions with abilities/skills is pretty good too.

Perks so far have been really hard to pick. Having access to pretty much all of them from the start is really nice but with so much choice it makes life difficult.

My picks kind of went in this order:

Local leader rank 2 (for supply lines and stores) - Even if you aren't doing a lot with the settlement side of the game the rank 1 for supply lines are useful so you can drop off junk in any workshop and access it from anywhere. Don't expect to make a lot of money from the stores until you have a lot of them running (it will still take a long time to earn back what they cost to set up).

Lock picking and Hacking (I don't like not being able to get into something so tried to pick these asap as ranks are available).

Gun Nut and Armorer - Unlocking these as soon as I can. Modding the armor and guns gives a much greater boost than any of the other perks. For example Rifleman Rank 2 might give me 60% (I think) damage increase for rifles but Rank 2 Gun nut can let me change the receiver to double the damage on pretty much any weapon (as well as better ammo capacity, recall, etc). Same deal goes for armorer Vs Toughness perks.

Science - Have rank 1 at the moment to unlock a few mods. Not a priority until I start using power armor or plasma/laser weapons.

Scavenger - Rank 2 getting the rare components from breaking down armor and guns is really nice. As is having tag items highlighted when exploring.

Rifleman - Only have rank 1 at the moment. Once I start running into stuff that I can't put down quickly from a distance I will start putting more points into this.

Toughness - Only have rank 1 to make life easier at the start when weapons where not so great. Now I try and kill everything at a distance so don't get hit that much. Once I start taking more damage I will put points in here.

Medic - Rank 1 just so I could build a clinic in the settlements. Tier 3 clinics are cheaper than the other stores that raise happiness (and don't need rank 2 cap collector to build).

TL-DR Version:

Settlement perks>Unlocking perks>Damage boosting>Damage Reduction>Other

20 hours in and all I have to show is that I now definitely do know (cos I found out), that Grandma plays the numbers.
I don't have the Radio playing while I play but I did on Sunday and now I understand this post.

I spent all day Sunday (seriously for the moment I got up until the Mrs dragged me away at around 8pm) building a new settlement at Hangman's Ally, I love the way it's enclosed by the surrounding apartment blocks, I built a lovely 3 level encampment for my settlers with a central communal area with shop and a bar with pool table and dance floor.

I've completely neglected building settlements, but I have a sneaking suspicion that at some point, settlement... settlers...? are going to be involved, so I should probably get that sorted.

Sanctuary is quite well defended, though.

Spoiler-not-Spoiler, the Vault-Tec rep from the beginning of the game is still alive, and you can send him to Sanctuary if you pass a speech check :p

Got to the Institute last night. Used the fatboy (?) for the first time and mini-nuked an assaultron. Most amusing. Also almost $#!7 myself when following the freedom trail because a ghoul ran up fast and screamed!! Also, the freedom trail is much longer IRL.... much, much longer :-/

No. Not of the train group.

Swan is found near a lake :) I wasn't actually following the Freedom Trail when I found him, just wandering around, but I must've been the area as I got updated from "Follow" to "Keep following"

Ahhhh ok. There is a lake in the park near the Massachusetts state house... when I was in Boston at Easter they had swan boats in it!

I finally did it!!!

I started the second quest :)

Stupid settlement bugs are annoying the hell out of me. Sanctuary was up to 95% happiness. Added more tier 3 stores and now it wont go above 85%. Have tried removing them and rebuilding/reassigning but the max happiness cap seems entirely random (between 85-95%). Doesn't help that when you leave it will randomly decide it has no beds or food and just tank the happiness. Think I'm going to give up on getting the achievement until after its patched.

Does anyone else never seem to get weapon drops from legendary's? Out of maybe 30-40 I have killed I have only had maybe 3 weapons (and they sucked).

It also seems like left leg armor is harder to find than the rest (on both normal armor and power armor). More than once I have upgraded my armor through drops and just been stuck with a left leg that still needed to be replaced. I also have quite a few sets of power armor which is just missing a left leg but have lots of spares for all the other parts.

Was there one of those little band-stands at the lake with some irradiated barrels in it?

You know, the decagonal/whatever ones with the pointy roof and the railing around it and the raised platform floor? I don't really know the proper name for one. I do recall there being swan boats there.

If it was, then yes, that's where you'll meet Swan :)

Yes! I have 2 right legs, one with +2 Luck and one with +1 Int and +1 Char, but they're both right legs!

I also have a syth left arm that makes the 'sweet spot' bigger in lockpicking :)
